A Meager Ginger Harvest In the Northeast: Increasing the Yield Means Warming the Soil in Spring

Ginger will grow in the northeast but I wanted a bigger yield. After seeing how it did... the bottom line is really warming the soil up in March and April when it gets planted. Ginger needs a good 6 months of warms soil, not just ambient (air) temperatures. Warm soil is key.

I also planted ginger this last April. Got very small sprouts. My plantings unfortunately failed. I did some research and one step I forgot to follow was to make sure the ends I cut dried well before planting. If you cut and plant them immediately they will rot from the cut end. Just a quick tip for anyone who wants to do this in the future. Need at least 3 healthy eyes and at least 3 inch long rhizome for a good plant (I learned from a ginger growing class online at fruition seeds) Also, I would try and find some organic ginger as a planting stock. Good luck, happy planting everyone 👍🏻 thanks Gary, always great videos and always time relevant!!!!

It is very pretty. I would take the leaves and put them in my water bottle..since Corolla still around 🤷‍♀️ Also I have had a celery plant growing in my bathroom window..almost a yr! She is gorgeous. Obvi wont eat stalk and ruin her. But every once in a while I'll pull a leaf and grab a taste just to say thank you lol. I can keep a celery plant in house baby'n for almost a year but my tomatoes in garden 🙈😭 I just have problems every year here in Jersey.

I've wanted to grow ginger for years. Next year or two I'll start. Thanks for that light bulb moment - WARM THE SOIL! Just waiting for relatively warm air after last frost date is not enough. Gary, I do believe you've made a huge positive difference for my future gardens!. Thank you very very much for this!!!

Hi Gary, I've been growing ginger in pots, squat 5 gal size, for several years and I bring it in in their pots and allow them to finish under a grow light, I harvest all the ginger I need and give alot away. I use Pro-mix container mix, water lightly until sprouts appear, then when 1st leaves unferrel then give liquid fertilizer once a month, and compost tea once a month, so about every 2 wks they are fed. Remember that the postal system xrays packages and that can damage some tubers. I also grow Tumeric same method bc its' a cousin to ginger. This year my Tumeric bloomed beautiful white orchid type flowers in September. Real surprise to me...both Ginger and Tumeric like morning sun, and dapled sun rest of the day. Give your rhyzomes another leg of growth in your pots then store rhyzomes in new contain mix thats' barely damp, don't allow to dry out. Plant your ginger out when you have good consistant soil warmth. Can't wait to see your solution..you always have good ideas to try. Blessings.

Wow that last one at 4:00 real nice! Was my 1st yr. I learned because of the cold and they love the heat to plant in shallow pot. Which I did. Um..it was a bit too shallow. I still got a harvest but maybe 4 servings after months of waiting lol. I started late as I decided last minute I wanted to try growing ginger for 1st time. So this year I will try slightly deeper. I know the 5g buckets absolutely do not work by seeing other gardeners experiments. The dirt just doesn't get warm enough.

Hi Gary! Also from MD (Balto Co) Just finished the Master Ginger Course from Fruition Seed Co. Good course! Learned a lot and I'm starting my seed ginger this wkd and getting some more from them first of the year. The owner seems very well educated on ginger root. Starting indoor with heat mats, type of soil. and harvesting. I presently have 2 experimental root growths of about 1.5 ft hi inside a hoop house and starting a tray inside a greenhouse in a cpl of days

Hi Gary, I didn't see your starting video but what I've been doing the past couple years is starting them in a container so that they are ready to put in the ground when the weather warms up. I'm in zone 7B in North Carolina. Curtis Stone did a video on someone growing Ginger Canada. He would pull the Sprouts off the rhizome and plant those down a row. That was super cool 2

I've been growing my ginger in pots so I could keep them warm. I thought they were doing really well, but at one point during the summer I put a clear plastic sheeting type greenhouse over them and did they ever take off! I plan to keep them in it all season next year. Go for the poly cold frame, possibly all year, and I bet yours goes nuts.

I have put gutter or roof cable heaters I put them in a snake pattern in the bottom of a raised bed. Filled with soilless mix about 6 inches. This keep soil warm enough to raise snap dragons in winter outside temps of 0 degrees F at times. I wonder if that would help keep Ginger over winter or just warm ground in early spring? Thanks for showing us what you have done!🙂

Hi Gary; This is Mike also from Maryland. Do you have anything on turmeric in your library. This is my second year growing it. I got it in the soil late spring 2018 and brought it in and stopped watering it last fall. This march I started watering them and it took till May, ( 6-7) weeks to see shoots so I put them outside and gave them a little fertilizer (osmacoat), they grew well , but no blossoms. I'm planning on re potting them this week and possibly keeping them watered and in a southern facing window till spring, I have kept them in partial shade (full morning 2-3 hrs and afternoon 3-4 hrs) over the last two summers. What do you think my best course of action might be?

No in person garden club meetings this year. So it's been difficult to communicate with some of the other local members. I just opened up my onion co-op to the Bowie Crofton garden club this past year and there is a lady (from India) who has said she has over wintered turmeric here and she is in the co-op so I have her number I'll let you know what I find out. Mean time I'll go ahead and bring some in and keep it alive over winter. I may pull some of them and put them in the garage as well. I've been experimenting with crossing tomato root stock I have one stabilized It reproduces consistently but with very vegetative characteristics (It grows like a weed) 10 ft tall if supported and up to 14 feet wide. I want to cross it with a more generative variety but I will try it as grafting stock this spring. I'll be using giant belgian as the sion (notoriously difficult to graft) and maybe some other heirloom types. Have a good weekend. Mike P.S. Johnny's seed has the best all around video on grafting I've seen.
