I agree about espoma, as a product the “average joe” can get if you find it in larger sizes like the 30lb you’re getting good value and very little guess work that comes into using the raw ingredients. I troll around for it and wait for clearance and stock up. 30lbs for $19 is one I find pretty often. For heavy feeders I do use some synthetic urea based products for a jumpstart. I think organic nitrogen is too expensive compared to synthetic and when you look at the “synthetics” they’re really just concentrates of nitrogen that you realistically encounter in nature.... 🤷🏼‍♂️ I think I did the numbers based on large scale corn and a 4x8 raised bed needs no more than about 50-100 grams (2-4 ounces) of urea to be fully treated when combined with something like epsoma for trace and PK.

Garys your seeds are awesome. I grew several this year. I grew the California Wonder heirloom peppers. They are gorgeous. I also bought a popular nursery hybrid too and were grown in exactly the same conditions and at the same time. Your seeds were by far the healthiest as most vigorous. The Romas and beefsteaks and Chocolate Bell peppers also grew very well and I am just now planting all of them in my garden. Im so happy with all the seeds I received. THANKS GARY!

Hi Gary, I’ve watched your videos for sometime and enjoy them very much. You’re absolutely right! As a geochemist I do see the public being ripped off by these fertilizers. It’s amazing how they use the old and new chemical names to describe their fertilizers. I’m sure this adds to the confusion, probably by design. For instance potassium sulfate is the new name and sulfate of potash is the old. I would caution viewers not to use treated wood as their source of ash, as this may have a high concentration of chromium and copper (from copper chromate). Treated wood before about 2003 in the United States, was treated with arsenic so please don’t burn that or any commercially sourced treated timber (railway ties) as that still contains arsenic. During burning, the arsenic will be made volatile in the smoke and could easily be breathed. I’m only my second year of growing my own vegetables and I’m using compost. I just use the old square gardening mix of one part vermiculite one part compost and one part peat moss. My plants grow tall and strong. I have few pests, except on brassicas. Even though I’ve had a strong background in science, when it comes to gardening I think of a woodland. I visualize myself sitting in the woods watching the processes. Trees grow, lose leaves and the leaves get reconstituted into the ground where they make nutrients available. The ground is damp and full of fungus worms and other insects, all of these ensure the nutrients are passed on from animal to plant and vice versa. The whole process works so well, why should we mess with it. Just my thoughts. One final note, some people use rock dust which I think is a waste of money. The rocks react with water over time and turn into clay, which will absorb a lot of trace elements in any case A video on KZbin, from the Alberta gardener, shows that when leaves are chemically analyzed for trace elements they contain all that the plant needs. That should save people a lot of money. Fall is here, go out and collect! Thank you Gary once again for your videos, they must take you a lot of time and we all appreciate them very much!

I love when chemists and geochemists have info. Never understood why gardeners dont follow the scientists. Thanks on the term changes too. As I read them, I was thinking they are the same thing. Yep, never burn treated wood. Rock dust is another unecessary. As what it could add, is already there or needed it such low levels, your compost provides it. Good cautions! I wonder how many folks never soil test, have excess P or K and are pouring more onto the soil anyway. I'm into "free" as a cost. Human urine is 11-2-4, grass from your lawn can be 2-.5-1, nettles are 5-1-4, tree leaves are 1-.5-1 (depending on the tree). Weeds vary, but chop and drop is the smart way to weed (unless you've let some weed go all the way to ripe seed). Human hair is 12-0-0. Coffee grounds are 2-trace-trace. If you live near an ocean, kelp is 1-0-4. I collect free things, toss it on the veg plot as mulch, and let nature take care of breaking it down. Probably best to dilute urine in water before pouring it around plants, but in the winter, that's not necessary. Just don't freeze anything off out there when you're applying nature's fertilizer on a winter night. ; )

My wife and I are on a fixed income, so I have to watch what I spend. Early last spring I was in Menards to get some peat moss to make my own container blend. I walked right past the small colorful fertilizers because they are expensive and back to the big bags in the back to look at the garden lime. Right next to it was Chick-n-poo. A 2-4-3 organic fertilizer (peletalized chicken manure) and the 25 pound bag was only $10. It worked well and I have half the bag left.

J.B. everyone is on a fixed income unless you are already wealthy. Us worker chumps haven't gotten a raise in forever. At least you have a fixed income. I could be fired tomorrow. Count your blessings. Furthermore, don't get suckered into buying commercially bagged fertilizers. You have to do some math before you buy. You got a bag of commercially bagged ChickNPoo for $25. The application rate is one bag per 650 square feet, or $15.38 per 650-sq-ft application. Had you bought a 50-pound bag of alfalfa pellets for $15, and applied at a rate of 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet, the cost per 1,000 square feet is $4.50.

@@dchall8 Since both my wife and I are both disabled, what we get is it. People who can work have the option of working more to get more money like I did in my 20's. You can also look for higher paying work. Both options are off the table for us. But I get it, times are hard for everyone. I only paid $10 for the 25 pound bag, not $25. Its now $11 so it went up $1 over a year. The NPK is a little higher at 2-4-3 while the alfalfa pellets are at 2-1-2. I can get the alfalfa pellets near me. But I couldnt lift a 50 pound bag, the 25 pound bag is at the very limit of what I can lift. I could get smaller bags of the alfalfa, but they cost more, and pretty much end up costing close to the chick-n-poo. Either way its better than the small 3 or 4 pound bags for $5 to $10 bucks you have to buy multiple times a season. In the end its just extra nutrients as I use plenty of free self made compost and leaf mold as the main nutrient source.

I would be careful with alfalfa. Not only is alfalfa genetically modified in many cases, but it also is sprayed with pesticides. So do not use it if you want an organic garden unless you pick up organic alfalfa pellets. The Standlee Brand does have organic alfalfa pellets. I buy it for my goats.

Thank you for the fertilizer comparisons. Very informative. One comment, I wouldn't dare use wood ash in my garden since my soil is naturally alkaline. Wood ash would raise the pH and make it even more alkaline. Wood ash is great for acidic soils though. A mention of that would have been helpful to viewers.

Thank you for the detailed coverage on ingredients and price. I want to add that another thing to consider is, not only are these products higher, but they use a lot of animal products. I try not to buy products with animal contents because I've seen videos on how these animals are treated in factory farms. It's not good.

Thanks, Gary for providing the NPK info about the alfalfa pellets-- my suspicions confirmed! I had to find a new owner for our pet rabbit last year, because my son was so allergic to it. Anyway, we had a leftover large bag of pellets. I noticed how easy this stuff breaks down in the rain, and how my lawn looked extra nice where my son had spilled part of the bag. I put it in the compost. I never thought of mixing it direct to the garden. By the way, if anyone wonders, I didn't have any weeds sprout from those pellets. They are pulverized pretty well.

A little bit of bone meal is all that went in my garden this year. Just for the tomatoes when they were setting fruit. Nothing wrong with organic fertilizers. Have plenty in a cabinet. Just don't need them much.

Alfalfa is also full of natural growth hormone called tricantonal. Some people use this extract separately. Alfalfa truly is amazing for organic gardeners. Very cheap has NPK ,growth hormone and carbon, plenty of cheap organic material for starting compost. Can even feed it to your animals. If I had extra land I would grow my own.

Gary, always good info for each person to make their own decision. I have gone more to organics especially this year and by that I mean compost and worm castings , the latter of which I develop my own and have for years. I had an extra brandywine plant which I put in an area previously where I cardinal flower and that ground had plenty of homemade compost and would be quiet humus. One of the things I did not too long after planting it there,,, I combined fish emulsion 5-1-1 with neptunes harvest 2-6-4 fish hydrolysate I put 2 tbls of each in a 2 gal watering can and fed this plant. Soon after I noticed an explosion of growth not just tall but wide and full, looked like something on steroids and still does. It is loaded with tomatoes and many blooms and buds. Since then I have added even more compost and worm castings, by pulling back mulch putting it down watering in and replacing mulch. In wrapping up I still am amazed each day to venture into my garden and see this particular plant which is not backing off one bit.

Thanks so much. So I would just sprinkle them across the surface and lightly work/rake them in. Water them in to, as they will expand and breakdown and be less interesting to animals.There is no wrong way. You can be pretty much be heavy handed on earth beds. I would experiment. In my containers I throw in 1 or 2 large handfuls and just mix it in. Past 15 gallons, they get 2 or 3 handfuls. At $15 a bag it is really worth testing it out. And thanks for watching. my first purchase of alfalfa pellets was the best money i ever spent. when i first started using alfalfa i was just after something to heat up my compost but was i surprised the first time i actually used that compost. now i add alfalfa pellets, biochar, layer scratchins & azomite every time i add material to my compost and when i mulch leaves. come spring when it's planting time i grind up beat root, cow peas, oatmeal, pinto beans, rice, split peas, all equal amounts and add a cup to each plant for my organic fertilizer with no need to add alfalfa since i've been adding it all year. my plants must be getting all the nutrients that they need because my produce is beautiful and this summer i had a 22ft tomato plant with several 3+ # (bigboy) tomatoes. i don't mind the extra work nor the money i save and i'm not sure that adding all of those other 'fertilizers' would have done better. i keep my shredded leaf compost separate from my other compost to help keep track of my carbon rich sources.

Good to see this catching on. I supplement my chicken and duck's food with alfalfa and beet. They love it. That, combined with their wood bedding and straw from the egg boxes, very quickly builds black soil. I move my chicken area every fall so that they are picking, eating, and pooping on the spring garden beds. There's no easier and cheaper way to garden...

most of the alfalfa grown in US is GMO and or grown with heavy pesticide use. You should only use organic alfalfa which you can buy at some feed stores. Slightly more expensive but well worth it.

This is a good idea. I've done similar things with other products. For example, when I adopted my cat 5 years ago, I noticed that his litter box at the shelter had what looked like Feline Pine in it. I checked the stores that carried this product and the average price was around $12 for a 20 pound bag. The country store has 40 pound bags of stall pellets for less than $6. So, I buy a 40 pound bag of pellets to use in my cat's litter box. It lasts about a month. If I had to buy the Feline Pine, it would cost $24 plus tax every month. It is possible to get wood pellets for a wood stove; but, the ones that I see around here contain an accellerant. I don't buy those to use for my cat.

That's exactly what I use for my cats. Out in the country we have to pay by the pound to dispose of trash. I can compost the stall pellets and not have to pay a fortune to throw away heavy clay litter. It also smells better and is safer for the cats.

I have 2 older cats and would be greatly interested in switching to this. Did your cats start on this as kittens or were you able to switch them as adults? Also, I clean the box each night, does the stuff clump together or how do you know when to change it?

@@lynnkerr9204 I started when they were older although one started when he was a kitten. I began by adding it to the clay litter that was already in the box, maybe about half and half. They took to it right away. I kept adding more as I cleaned it out. It does not clump, it will become sort of powdery as it gets wet. It doesn't turn into a solid mass like clay litter. The solid stuff just dries out. You will lose a little when you clean it out but it works so well you might find that you don't have to clean as often. Or, it is so much cheaper you could clean the whole thing out every day or two.

@@lynnkerr9204 I only have one cat. I scoop out the solids every day. Wood pellets crumble when liquids touch them. They don't clump. I change out the litter box once a week. If I had more than one cat that used the same litter box, I would have to change it out probably twice a week. My cat was about 7 months old when I adopted him from the shelter. His litter box at the shelter had pellets in it which I thought was Feline Pine. Any wood pellet product sold as stall pellets is basically the same as Feline Pine and less expensive, depending upon where you live. If you have concerns about whether your cats will use wood pellets, you can introduce the pellets to the litter box on a gradual basis.

I’ve been using alfalfa pellets and making my own bone meal (using chicken bones). I pressure cook the bones and give my dogs the broth, then dehydrate and grind in an old coffee grinder. The money I save gets spent....I bought coco coir mulch because I’m a sucker for pretty mulch!!

Free fantastic fertilizer that is available in LARGE quantities is used coffee grounds from local coffee shops!! 2.1-0.3-0.3, so it is primarily nitrogen, but still! Also other trace minerals your plants need like magnesium, chromium, and calcium (yep, googled that lol).

Thank you! I have been using Espoma Citrus Tone & Plant Tone with bone meal and have had good results, but I was swayed to buy Dr Earth. You're right, it is expensive 14.95 for 4#. I'll see how it does on my hydrangeas.

The 50 pound bag of alfala pellets ar $21.99 at the local tractor supply ---- so that transposes into a 25 pound bag of 4-2-4 while the garden-tone or plant-tone are, if I remember correctly 3-4-4 or 4-4-4 and they are 4 or 8 pound bags about $8 or $12 plus the alfalfa adds a lot more organic bulk to feed soil life. Wow ty for this video I work at a feed store I didn't know that about beet bulp and alfalfa pellets. We do have fertilizer and hay I actually have a compost pile going the alfalfa in it really gets it going. I may mulch a patch with it and beat pulp. Thanks again for the video.

1 BAG of Azomite ( rock dust) Comfrey leaves from garden turned to a Tea just those 2 items you have about all Macro & Micro nutes, trace minerals w/homemade compost good to go. a 40lb bag of Azomite last a long time really dont need to purchase anything else but the seeds to grow the rest

And I used brown sugar with needless to make Fermented Plant Juice, to use as a foliar spray ...just added the roughage from a bucket of comfrey tea to my compost pile (and do have rock dust as well)

When I look for fertilizer, it's always the highest amount of potassium per dollar. Phosphorus isn't needed in high amounts and can be obtained from food wastes such as bones and Nitrogen can be found in urine in quantifiable amounts.
