The attention to detail, derailer adjustment, chain rub and properly torquing everything is why I feel the cost associated with a bike shop is well worth it. You are spending over $1,200 on the bike, why not make sure it's as perfect as possible...

Lean to do that all yourself. Derailleur adjustment is not a black art and you can do your own adjustments as needed. And torquing bots is even easier

Just got a ride one up yesterday to put together for my wife. Gave me a reason to pull some of the old bottom bracket tools out that I haven't seen for 20 years. I have a LMT'd so that's a little different setup in the bottom bracket. There's a lock run you tighten with the old Shimano square taper bb tool. I also wanted to double check the torque so I had to use my square taper crank puller. It was a walk done memory lane, before press in BB's and the new crank installation systems.

It's great to hear a pro's input, and I like Matt's organized approach. Some bike shops won't touch e-bikes, perhaps out of ignorance, or perhaps they view them as a threat to their non-e-bike business. Some shops that do sell and service e-bikes refuse to service any brand they do not sell. Some even have contracts with bike companies stating they are not allowed to service competing brands. I personally find that amusing because, if I bring my bike to a shop and get turned away because it's not a X brand bike, I'll just go to a different shop. Did they think that attitude would cause me to buy one of their bikes? Lol. That Ride1Up box is substantially smaller than most, and that means they can move more bikes per shipment. However, the crank and fork assembly may be more than the typical person can do nowadays. I taught my son how to do car brakes when he was seven, and my daughter changes her own alternators, but not everyone sees value in that. When assembling an e-bike, I find the battery and charger first, and let them charge while the rest of the bike is being built. It's not mandatory since they usually come 50 to 70% charged, but it's nice to have a mostly full charge for that first ride.

Nothing you state is the issue. The problem is 90% is direct to consumer E-bikes are $200 bikes with $800 worth of electronics. They have to deal with a cheap bike and those issues, and then they have to hope the electrical system works because they are limited in diagnostics tools and documentation. Finally, they end up with an irate customer who is pissed off that their $1200 bike is not working because of a bad battery or voltage controller.

This morning I found your review of the Step-Thru model. First I want to say that you give excellent reviews and secondly that you convinced me that the Ride1Up 700 is the ebike for us. Later this morning I found your KZbin with Matt assembling your 700 Step-Thru which was super. It convinced me that with such excellent and detailed information at hand, I could do it as I have reasonable mechanical ability and patience. Thank you so much for this video! Without this video,I would have been completely lost on building this bike! The assembly instructions in the box left much to be desired for the amateur DIYer with no bike experience. Will probably still try to get an expert to tune it up and make sure it is safe to ride, but I would have never gotten the fender, rear rack, or half the other attachments on this thing without this video to watch with pauses at each step!

I noticed that no grease was added to the crank or seatpost. In my experience, it's good practice to add grease to these areas during assembly to prevent squeaks and other noises. Great video!

Really, REALLY great video! I'm a very handy, very skilled with building/repairing all kinds of products with all kinds of tools (and I own a full spectrum of quality tools, including torque wrenches) and I really got a lot out of it. Thank you for doing this...looking forward to seeing more like it! For one thing, this video gives me some insight/understanding into likely many customer complaints about direct to consumer ebikes. I can now see that probably many of the complaints about ebikes received are in many cases simply examples of customers not having the necessary skills to deal with relatively minor problems (misalignments, slightly bent components, etc.).

This was a great video, very helpful!! I have just one criticism that led me astray (my issue is probably super obvious to anyone who actually builds bikes or works as a mechanic). Although you specifically showed putting grease on the fork during install, you didn't mention grease at all for the crank arm nor the pedals. This is my first bike assembly, so after you showed where to use grease in the first part of the video I was kind of counting on you to continue that trend. When I went to correct my oversight, the crank is already stuck (and I haven't even ridden it yet!). A crank puller is getting shipped. Not the biggest deal, and I always need an excuse to expand my bike tool collection. Still, it might be helpful if you add those little pop-up notes at those sections of the video to help out a newbie like myself. Anyway overall super helpful, 9/10 video!

@@EbikeEscape Thanks for the informative video, I wish If I seen this video before I assembled my bike a year ago. You're reviews are very important to me as it helped me when I bought my LMTD. It's a fantastic bike with torque sensor, too bad they don't ship it with the torque sensor anymore. my spokes tension was really bad on the front wheel, one of the Nipple was very tight causing the inner wall to bend. Ride1up send me new wheel and inverse me for the expenses that I paid to professional bike mechanic fixing the bike. The rear wheel was out of alignment as well but not as bad as the front one he was able to do wheel tru which fix the problem. He tensions the spokes as much as possible to the recommend tension from the manufacturer. He said those numbers are almost impossible to hit but he did the best he can and makes sure it's totally safe to ride. That was done at my local REI shop. Spokes tensions are very important subjects when it comes to safety. Thank you very much and please keep them coming.

YES! Spoke Tension for both setup and ongoing maintenance will prevent breakage on these ebikes. I Just assembled this Same Model and want to express my appreciation for your effort with this video. Of particular note was the Brake alignment info and Derailleur alignment (would love a bit more on how important setting the limit screws is). I think I messed up installing the drive-side crank. There was this rubber cap on the square plug that I assumed was to help tighten the bolt on but as I went, it got smushed between the crank and the bike. But I couldn't take it back off to remove the rubber cap because you need a special tool for that. Hopefully I've tightened it hard enough to not worry about the crank falling off or something, but that rubber-ish cap is smushed through the drive-side crank and up against the bike. But the chain has very minimal rattling.

From talking with Matt, the adjustments he had to make on this ebike pale in comparison to some of the things he has seen on higher end bikes from more prominent brands. So while the adjustments may seem daunting, I wouldn't turn away just because of those things. Best option for anyone considering this ebike and is worried about the assembly: Pay the couple hundred dollars and have it assembled by your local bike shop. -JT

I leave my bike plugged in all night because once it’s fully charged then the charger goes to work balancing the cells to make them last longer but don’t leave it plugged in more than a full day or two.

That sounds dangerous. Don't do that with Li-ion. You can make them last longer by NOT fully charging it every single time. The amount of cycles in the battery matters since it's limited. Charging to 80% only uses up about 1/4 of a cycle. I learned this 3 years ago before I bought my previous phone. Li-ion batteries age faster when you charge them fully too much and when you discharge them really low as well as letting them die or deplete to 0%. I know from experience that the Li-ion battery in my last phone was still around 85% health after 2.5 years (typical is 80% after 2 years, at least that's the usual guarantee). My previous phone, which I would charge overnight regularly and didn't monitor, was nowhere near in as good shape after only a little over a year of use.

i wonder if that grease he used for the fork is actually anti-seize lubricant? i was recommended to use some on my seat tube to prevent damage and to possibly avoid the tube becoming "fused" with my frame. the lubricant i used is silver in color and looks to be a similar viscosity to the one in the video.

What's the distance once built from rear to front tire centered on the 700. I'm looking to purchase a carrier which will be long enough. Also which, would you recommend that's not to costly for two of those 700 series?

The wheelbase is listed as 43". So most carriers should work for these ebikes. We have done a review of a low cost rack, I will link that below. The rack constantly goes in and out of stock. Just make sure you keep an eye on the weight limit of the rack.

The idea that you should not leave the battery on the charger in case the charger fails and damages the battery is quite ridiculous. If your charger fails, you'll have to connect it the next time the battery is dead anyway and then it will definitely damage the battery. If your charger fails, it will damage your battery. Disconnecting a charged battery is not going to change that just perhaps delay it until the next time you need to charge your battery. And why even worry? Has any such failure ever been reported by anyone?

Thanks for the reply. I assembled mine. The skewer is a 125 standard for you pinheads out there. If you plan on changing tires to knobby cross country ones. The rear fender will barely have enough clearance for a 2.4 width with knobs on the tire. I wanted 2.6 in the rear and front. 2.6 in the rear was touching the fender. Even with it adjusted all the way up. A 2.6 fits perfectly in the front, because the fender can be adjusted with plenty of room. I settled for continental cross king 2.6 in the front and 2.3 in the rear. There was tons of room in the rear with a 2.3. Ideally with no headaches buy 2.4 or less when going with mtb tires. 2.3 being optimal. Also try to keep the front brake line routed outside the fork. To avoid spoke damage.

I am 6'6" - will this bike fit me? Ride1up says up to 6'4"... Will it take an aftermarket longer seat tube and adjustable stem or riser? Is the wheelbase long enough for 6'6" I am mostly arms and legs; really long shins and forearms. Also, can this bike be assembled by a person such as myself with "some" knowledge? I don't have a bike stand to assemble on; and will have to buy whatever tools outside of the basics or what they ship with. But $200 to $300 for a build kinda defeats the low price point! I think your cockpit area might feel a bit cramped, because as you said "all arms and legs." However yes the 700 series can take an adjustable stem or riser and a longer seat tube. If you are mechanically capable, patient, or can watch KZbin videos there is no reason you cannot. Besides this video, Ride1Up even has some pretty awesome assembly videos for reference. And yes, all Ride1Up ebikes come shipped with everything that you need to assemble and get riding. -JT

I have made bikes "fit" with longer stems, but there is only so much one can go "out" (forward), but if the stem is one of those that tilts upwards (which is OK here, not using drops), and also the correct seatpost (to allow the seat to slide a little back, but here, too, the knees need to stay in an athletic position). Being electric, I don't need it to fit like my Waterford 1200 (66 cm c to c bracket to top tube; i.e., huge!), but it sounds like it's worth a shot. They do offer a 30 money back guarantee if one takes it apart! Do you know of any other eBikes that are bigger and and not an "arm and a leg" (pun intended..) price-wise? Except for torque wrench and grease, or do they include these, too? Thanks again!

With the 700 series, you gotta be a little dopey not to able to assemble it. Seriously, not a bike mechanic here, but it was easy. There is nothing to be done with the electronics at all. it's all pre-wired. Brakes are all mounted on the bars. Un-packing was the most tedious part. it's a very basic bicycle without the battery and electonics. It's a large, heavy comfort bike with a very basic 8-speed Shimano Acera. Mine never needed adjustment in the slightest, and didn;t for the first 600 miles until the cables stretched a tad from normal use. You just install the fork, then the front wheel. You slip on the brake units and your good to go. You can take it just about any bike shop for fine tuning or a check on your work. They'll check spoke tension and make sure the braks pads are aligned and nt dragging. Brakes are very good qualit Tektro Dual Piston types and are off the shelf. So is the gearing and shifter. Bike shops will work on common bike parts, but they won't get involved in warranty work or anything related to electronics unless they are the vendor. People should be aware that electric bikes are not new. Just in N.America. They are extremely reliable and if you have Samsung batteries or equivalent, you're good. The 700 is a good, solid commuter. Mine was bought new in 2019 and the only thing that has failed are the lights, which I simply snipped off and replaced with upgraded bar mounted lights I had on another bike.

You've got to be a little dopey... Or they send you the wrong front wheel assembly, so the bolt is far too short to mate with both forks.

@@theofficialczex1708 If that happened, then it happened in China, and almost all bikes have similar occasional issues with wrong parts. The commonality among brands is wide. Many frames are made in the same factory. The production numbers are vast and the pace is, too. Wrong parts from China is nothing new. I will say this: I have no idea how customer service is at Ride-OneUP. I've never had an issue except the lights - which I replaced with far better ones from another bike I had.
