I so enjoyed your Chanel today. I’m making mince pies, too! I bought crust and mince already made. I did actually make mince meat back in the 1970’s when we lived in Humboldt County. We were living wild life of the so called hippies. I really had lots of time. I even made a batch of root beer. We ended up in towns and living more convivially. Now we are in the foothills of the great Sierras. This is the first time I’ve made mince pies since we lived along the Eel River. I’m so happy to have you for a friend. You portray a very brave woman. And what the world needs now is BRAVE WOMEN! Especially here in the USA!❤ keep up the good work.

Memories - DS teacher Mrs McCurdy coming round and checking that you had no flour above the second knuckle of your fingers! Gosh I loathed those classes - I was the one whose steamed pudding never cooked, whose Swiss roll cracked etc etc 😂 yet I probably use more of the techniques that I learned in those classes, than any science lesson technique, in day to day life.

My dear Kathryn, thank you for still making a video, the mince pies look yummy and I’m so glad you’ve found a lovely new walk. I imagined you finding a place to bury your cloths in the new year. It is a very sad time for a lot of people I agree, Christmas time can be very challenging for some and my heart and prayers go out to them. I bought a real tree with a root too, she will be put in a bigger pot outside my house ready for next year hopefully. Yours looks so sweet, especially up against your gorgeous curtain. I hope you have a lovely time with your children, my hubby and I are going to stay with my youngest and her three boys, she recently moved house, she too is going through a hard time. Anyway take good care of yourself, I am really looking forward to next year’s projects, thank you for being real. Lots of love and hugs, Bella ❤❤

Re the mince pies … we would call the mis-shapen “rustic”. 😎😎😎 the end chat was lovely. Christmas season is a commercial tsunami of music, commercial pressure to buy and unreasonable function and social expectations. I think it’s hard on everyone. Some people just have more in the capacity and energy tank to withstand it all. We all deserve a soft, gentle Christmas season no matter what flavour of celebration we follow. Wishing you every comfort this season. May next year be full of small daily joys and lots of fabric pleasures. Love from me and Gracie 🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛

My Dad was a baker. He taught me to use a pair of scissors (not the snippy snipps!!) instead of a knife to create the steam escape hole int the tarts. ( In my family we always called them tarts, pies were bigger). Anyway, the scissors create a very cute little triangular opening, that always makes me think of “four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie”, and of course are much faster than a knife when making dozens at a time. I am always glad when Christmas is over. I am a giving sort of person, make a lot of gifts and feel almost burned out by the 25th. I do, however, celebrate the return of the light! Thank you for lighting my life and my spirit with your thoughts and creations throughout 2024. Have a peaceful, restorative break and enjoy your children’s company. I look forward to whatever 2025 brings!
@k3n.clothtales27 күн бұрын
We call them tarts if they are open and pies with a lid. Isn't it funny and interesting how we have different ways of saying the same things? It's one of my (many) favourite things about this community, learning about how we all do and say things slightly differently but very much the same. If that makes sense. ❤️

Thanks for this delightful video! I don’t identify as Christian but grew up with Christmas. So, it’s been a little difficult this time of year. I’m learning to just accept the good wishes behind all the “merry” and allowing myself to just feel however I feel. I love those little mince meat pies I had when I was in the UK a few years back. I’ve been making my own, since we only have full sized mince pies here in the US. I had quite a time finding jars of mince meat. When I did find it, I bought all they had! Have a wonderful visit with your kids and I’m looking forward to our new year of stitching. ❤️

Thank you so much Kathryn for this lovely video reminding me of typical English things to do at Christmas or Yuletide. I’ve been living in Portugal for the last forty odd years, but making mince pies is my way of celebrating my British heritage as I can’t imagine Christmas without them and for me Christmas is all about traditions and I loved listening to you talking about how your grandma taught you and things your dad would say. So heartwarming. I would also like to thank you for this year with you, all the wonderful videos, the beautiful community you have created and the sharing of your life and the difficulties and challenges you have had to face. What a wonderful, thoughtful and intelligent person you are, Kathryn. I just spent two months living alone on Fair Isle. It was beautiful and I missed being with my family but I probably spent more time on face time with them than I would have done in person. It was also one of the most wonderful Christmas days I have ever had. I did exactly what I wanted, ate when I felt like it and did art in the garden because the weather was so good. Ps I laughed at your egg wash. I have never got round to buying a pastry brush and my fingers are the best too. Thank you so much.

That sounds wonderful, I would love to visit Shetland and Fair Isle. My Dad worked at Sullem Voe when I was a little girl, my mother and I never went but he told me stories about Shetland and I always wanted to go. I am glad you had a lovely time ❤️

You needed a glass of wine for the galloping gourmet lol. My family isn’t keen on large mincemeat tarts or pies but they inhale the mini tarts. I add a splash of brandy to the mincemeat. I’ve really enjoyed your channel this year Kathryn, thank you so much for sharing it with us. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family and look forward to your plans for next year. Love your little tree and angel. 🎄Merry Christmas 🎄 ❤

I enjoyed watching you make your mince pies. Mince was my Nana’s favorite! I think I will give your pastry method a try since I can’t ever seem to get a good result with my Nana’s recipe for crust. I understood what you were expressing at the end. We don’t yet know if our grandchildren will come over to see us or not. I made a couple of gentle invitations for this week but the dates did not work for them so we are left wondering if we will get to see them at all. Instead of fretting I am focusing on my husband, our younger son, and our lovely old dog. I do love Christmas and I remain hopeful. Enjoy your visitors. Soon enough the year will turn.

I loved this video - spending time with you making your mincemeat pies! My mother was a 'pie baker extraordinaire' and she did it exactly like you do, down to working the flour into the fat with her "fingertips" as you mentioned. Every caution you mentioned she told me when teaching me many, many years ago. Her mother loved mincemeat pie and I remember it being a part of every Christmas and Thanksgiving. Your new home is a lovely, evolving creation and I hope you are cozy and peaceful there with Stella and Fredfred. I, too, am looking forward to projects in the new year and would just as soon fast forward through all the Christmas stuff. Probably more of us out there than we'd think - especially in our age bracket. Sending you love and light, as we celebrate the Winter Solstice ☀♥.

Good morning Kathryn, Your reminiscing about you Grany; brought back so many memories of my own Gran. My mom's mother, she had 13 children and she made everything from scratch. I loved visits, we were always either baking or sewing when I would stay for a weekend. Mince pie was always her favorite. She taught me how to make Green tomato mincemeat. I still can smell the cinnamon and cloves as I write this. I haven't made mince pie in a while.... I think this is the year to do it. Thank you for bringing fond memories of holidays past. Blessings for a joyous Christmas and fruitful new Year.😘

I also made mince pies this year after many years of buying them. (Once I was buying ready-made pastry and ready-made mincemeat, it seemed a bit pointless!) I am so pleased with myself that this must be almost the only place where I have not already boasted that I made my own mincemeat - thank you, Delia Smith - and my own pastry. The crowning moment was when my dear TOH actually said that he likes them better than bought ones! This is from a man who would always choose a canned soup over a proper homemade soup - you get the picture. I’m sure your children will be equally impressed ,if not more, with your Yorkshire-style mince pies. ❤

Kathryn thank you for expressing your thoughtful reflections on Christmas, I appreciated your honesty and bravery. As a child I never ate mince pies at Christmas because I thought it was meat mince and the thought of it made me think Yuk! I think I was almost an adult before I worked out the truth about Christmas mince pies 😂. Enjoy your children and all the love from your followers 💐💐💐🌞🌞🌞
