They were not stretched, but the previous ones were flattened. the new version is proportional. Notice the circular shapes, especially the globe in The Star.

Exactly, this! The newer German AGM version has also proper round circles, and lovely, subtle, watercolour images.

Exactly! The circles are also in greenish versions. These versions after the greenish ones, despite being more colorful, because they are flat, look poor and cheap. AGM just needs to release this rephotographed version with better paper quality, matte finish and gold edges.

Hello! I have both these decks so I thought I'd throw another wrench into the stew. So, she's not gaslighting you, the proportions ARE different and the images ARE stretched. However, the proportions in the new deck are actually more geometrically accurate. Anything circular is now actually circular whereas if you look at things like the moons, the pentacles, orbs, etc in the older US games deck, they are actually squished slightly top to bottom. This becomes more noticeable if you look at the cards sideways. Another way you can tell the US games version has been tampered with in post is the line work. For example, if you look at the Universe card and the details in her legs, in the new version the lines between her legs and the blue/green background colors are nearly absent, which is how it would be with watercolor paintings. In the US games version there is a clearly added black line around her legs which was most likely added to cover any distortion/blur created when the exposure/contrast was manipulated. I see this happen in a lot of the cards. So, for me, the "new fancy photography" really shows itself in the transitions between colors more than in the actual colors themselves. I doubt this will help and will only add more confusion to the "do I like it?" question but yeah... :)

See i thought the darker lines were from the saturation being turned up and not added, but yeah in watercolor there usually isn't any dark lines separating figures from backgrounds which I think I mentioned that the older version never really looked like watercolor paintings but the new version does. They probably squished the older version to fit the more square-ish dimensions of the large edition but yeah the new images are larger scans of the art and no stretching was needed it does look... fitting? I'm not a fan of the colors, like everyone else I like the bright pretty colors lol

@@TheTigersAbyss I actually like the colors in the new version :P This might be just me, but I feel like it's a sliver of Lady Frieda's softer femininity coming through to kind of balance out Crowley's more severe masculine direction of her art. The bright bold colors are fantastic in their own way, but something about the new photography version feels more balanced, to me.

I have an obscene number of these decks, always looking for that "perfect" version. I recently came across another version, it's in a deep purple tuck box that is in German and has the Magus pictured on the box and might be my favorite to date. It's different than both the USG and the French editions.

How fascinating…. Lol I agree I don’t know how to feel either. I was like totally the green box with the details and then you said the new deck it looks more like watercolour and I was immediately confused, because you are so right. Now all I want to do is go to an exhibition of her original paintings to see them. The green box by the end just felt like constrast, texture and saturation up and a real movement away from the watercolour….. but I still like the green box… I think…. Not sure 😂😳

I totally see what you mean about raising contrast, texture and saturation in the green box. I kind of think I "might" like the new one better than the green box. . .? Maybe. . .? I would also love to see them in an exhibition!!! I LOVE going to exhibitions of works I've seen in print for years -- it's an entirely new experience of the piece and the print copies are never the same again after that. For better or worse.

Thanks for the upload. It's very detailed and made me realize I have the "newer" version. I love this deck but I don't like the muddiness of some of the cards. I am definitely placing the large US Games version on my Christmas wishlist this year. What size is your US games deck?

Ok so your light is causing a glare on the newer? cards on the right. So it made it harder to see the real differences. I saw more detail on the green box version which is what I hve.

I like the detail in the new ones. It seems like the textures are easier to see. The older versions are blurrier. Older technology. You hit it on the head when you said the old ones are more saturated. I love the new ones. I hope they release them in English soon. 93!

Just bought this deck - the French edition - on Amazon UK. I already have the 'regular' size (Gold box edition) and the pocket version (Long gold box edition) which are only available in German. The digital photos for this version of the Thoth were taken back in 2008; since then this deck seems to go in and out of print regularly, reappearing in different sizes. It's like a mystical phantom - if you see it grab it before it fades away again.

It probably also doesn't help that decks with the old scans are still circulating. Hopefully what I've heard is true and AGM is just going to stop printing the old scans all together and stop this "mystical phantom" game lol

I tried learning the Thoth, but the only thing I resonated with is the Astrology concepts from the Golden Dawn. Otherwise, I don't vibe with Crowley's take on Tarot. I rehomed my deck, but appreciate those who know Thoth well. Thanks for the review! 👏👏👏

I"m only about 30 min in and thoroughly enjoying this walk-thru, Zack! Soooo much to take in here in terms of subtlety...but I think i like the "new" version better. . .? Maybe. . .? Or I love the Thoth and so I love both versions because they each offer a different feel and angle to the cards. I'll have to catch the rest of this later cause I gotta move 'em out & get going. Back to work!

Managed to finish! Yay! BTW, the RWS was published in 1909, 5 years before the start of WW1. The original plates were destroyed in the London Blitz of WW2. ❤️🙏

The New edition just said, "brown" where with the older scans (which are AGM, US games just distributes i only used it as an example 😉) there are different colors between the bull, the four heads of the fixed signs, and his robes I'll probably do a follow up on the colo scales and the new version

Hold on. (1) Is YOURS shown here the 2008 digital remastered version? (2) Is it BIGGER than mine from a few years ago? My blurry memory of things suggests that the 2008 digital remastered German version by OTO (?) and AGM-Urania has a much HIGHER definition. So you can see all the details like brush strokes and colour shadings, but the colours aren't as saturated. (It was very apparent in the red of the Emperor from what I can recall). But it was honestly way too small. (I can see yours is French) I have been waiting for (1) Bigger (2) In English. Thanks to USG, I am just waiting for a bigger version of that 2008 digitally remastered version.

I don't know but that new version looks hideous. What on earth happened to the focus of the expensive camera they supposedly used to photograph the cards? There are now blurry, out of focus and the color is desaturated and lifeless. The US Games version looks infinitely better. What a disaster to print those "new" versions and try to claim it is an improvement.

I think its simply a matter of the paintings being victims of time and the acid in the paper they were painted on. The originals could only be preserved so much right? But out of focus and blurry? No. The details are still there. But at least we still have the older versions still available

I feel like the new deck is the Instagram filter version.....🤷‍♀️. Blurring the defined lines, changing the colors hues and intensities. I'm still not educated enough on the Thoth (it's a little intimidating, and different from comfort zone RWS😜) and I appreciate these videos.
