What can a small $60 battery charger from Amazon do? Can you power an EV EKX 12P with it? What does ah / amp hours mean? Why did I return the Ryobi stuff? What's with that leaf blower? These answers and more (or less) in tonight's video
Enjoy!

After watching Howie's video I bought an Omars battery 40200mah 90w and use it on my battery powered ceremony system. I use a LD Systems batt pwrd line array so the Omars just powers my two Shure QLXD lapel mics and maybe a media player if it's batteries need it. Seems like I could get 20 30-60 minute ceremonies out of it easy before recharging. Two ceremonies doesn't faze it. I have used it to power lighting away from easy power sources. I want to test it with a lower wattage moving head and up light in a truss. If it proves to handle that load for a few hours and you're running wireless DMX then you would have more freedom placing totems!

The other day I was testing out an off grid option for ceremonies. I powered an Evolve 50 and played music through my tablet from about 11:15-3:00 this afternoon and the power went down about half way. I'll do more testing with some mics and such hooked up to see how long it will last. Below is the info: Portable Generator, SUAOKI 222Wh Power Station Power Supply Rechargeable Lithium Battery Pack with 110V/200W AC Inverter Outlet, Dual DC 12V & USB Ports.

If you use one of these, watch your volume. A 30 minute wedding ceremony with the just sound reinforcement of the vows is much less average rate of use than sound reinforcement of the keyboard and amp. Not all amps like the modified square wave of inexpensive small inverters. A smaller amp is more efficient at lower sound levels than a larger amp. If going small for an inverter, something like a keyboard monitor amp may be the best match. I have used a Roland CM-30 cube for some smaller events. Put it on a mic stand and plug in a mic. A pure sine wave inverter can fix the noise problem and introduce another, they draw more power at idle and higher levels so the run time is shorter on the same size battery. Sine wave inverters are at another price point and power requirement.

The Omars is only 20% more capacity than the 4Ah Ryobi battery or 60% more than the 3Ah batterry. The Amp hour rating for the charger is the sum of the twelve 3.6(3.7) volt 2000mAh cells used in it. The Ryobi batteries are 18V (using a multple of 5 cells).. So it is actually only equivalent of maybe a 5 hour Ryobi battery. 18/3.6 =5. 24Ah / 5 = 4.8Ah equivilence when comparing to 18V batteries. Accoording to NewEgg the Omars battery is actually configured as a 14.8V 6Ah battery. It uses 12 lithium ion cells that are each 3.6-3.7V and 2000mAh. Watt hours is what you actually need calculate to comapare battery capacity. The Omars has 6Ah*14.8 or 2Ah*12 cells * 3.7 volts for 88.8 watt hours. A 4Ah 18v battery would be 3.7V * 5 (18.5V) * 4 amp hours equals 74 watt hours. A 3Ah 18V battery would be 55.5 watt hours.

I too bought the Ryobi, but I have the power tools too, so the battery 2 pack is a good investment for me. The free inverter is a nice bonus (although there is a little buzz when no music is playing). I wouldn't trust it for a FULL ceremony system, but I think pairing it with a battery powered speaker (Maui 5 Go or the JBL Eon Pro) would work great. The inverter would only be used for the mixer, laptop and wireless mic. I will be using mine for less formal parties, remote outdoor cocktail hours or by the pool. Possibly just to entertain myself when the electricity goes out and my cell phone is dead.

I think the next video is too start over and let that run and a decent or high volume and test how long it lasts.. I would buy one for each speaker if that draws and does well for longer periods. 40 min is perfect for a ceremony but how about a back yard BBQ for 4 hours? Sweet idea!

Very helpful to see. I'm considering the Omni Power Station 120v for my DJ set ups. (MacBook, Laptop Cooling Mat, Numark Scratch Mixer, EV Evolve 30M) with possible power to a (EV-ZLX 15P & EV ZLX 12P). If I can find some portable power to run those items collectively for 5 hours, I'd be so happy.

Wow that is some great music! I'm so glad to find this video and this is almost exactly what I'll be doing. I just picked up a Jackery 240 on a Black Friday sale. I'll be running a Yamaha MG10 mixer, a Sennheiser wireless receiver and a ZLX15P or a Bose S1 (which has it's own battery) for my ceremony rig. I'm so excited to have a much more mobile ceremony setup.

Two 3AH batteries give you 150% of the power of one 4AH battery. That blower will run on the bottom of the line 2AH battery, just half as long as on the 4AH. Each 3AH would run the blower for 3/4 the time of the 4AH. However, the thing you are missing in power electronics from an inverter (whether Ryobi, Omars, or whoever) is that MANY electronic devices require clean AC power - as in the pure sine wave that comes out of the outlets in your walls. For that, you need a pure sine wave inverter - not the usual cheap modified sine wave inverter that Ryobi and probably Omars have. Some tool chargers specifically tell you NOT to use them with modified sine wave inverters - the multi-chemistry Ryobi charger I have includes that caution as do the chargers for many other lithium battery tools. Pure sine wave inverters are not cheap - they're a step up in technology complexity so they cost more than the modified sine wave inverters. They also don't come in convenient pocket sized packages (Omars). Mighty Max (better known for solar powered and remotely operated gate openers) offers a 500 watt pure sine wave inverter for $85 at walmart.com (free shipping). To use it, you'll need a 12 volt battery adequate for the amount of power to be used and the number of hours you'll be using it. There's a spreadsheet designed for larger systems but you could adapt it to the things you want AC power for: www.jecarter.us/files/My-Solar-Generator.xls Be aware that serious battery power is expensive (I picked up some one-year-old 100AH AGM batteries for $100 each - that's half of less of new cost). The batteries are also heavy (I'm currently revamping my solar power system and the 70lb AGM batteries get heavy well before you get a dozen of them moved). I can't justify the expense of lithium batteries for the size installation I have (8 to 24 hour backup - depends on season - of fridge, internet, central heat, some lights). Note that having that much power requires 400-500AH of batteries. For things that run on 5 volts or 12 volts, the portable power packs are small and convenient - just be sure you know how much power it can provide for how long. There are some tradeoffs in battery use because batteries generate power by chemical means and there are limited ways to control the speed of a chemical reaction. You can get a lot of power for a short time (.blower) or less power for a longer time (drill or light). Be sure you know there is enough power available for the things you want to power and enough to power those things as long as you need them. There is no magic bullet that puts unlimited power in a pocket-sized package.

Great job Brian and thank you for doing another informative video. I'm glad you remembered about that product. I wasn't that impressed with the Ryobi experiment since it seemed too involved when John said he bought the deal and then sold the stuff he didn't want to upgrade the battery to the bigger battery. It's actually funny how you had a better solution the entire time sitting on a bench covered in random stuff. Lol. The best part is the price. Especially, since it would be a good idea to have more than one just in case one wasn't charged or it failed for some reason. Keep up the good work and using that creative mind of yours.

hi Brian, I'm an electronics student and I have to say you made a mistake, what matters to determine the power is not the amps / hour but the watts / hour; to find them you have to multiply the amp / hour with the battery voltage, with the rioby then doing the calculation would be 72 watts / hour while for the omar assuming that it is equipped with a lithium battery similar to that of a 3.7v cell phone get about 89 watts / hour; so even if the omar has more capacity it is not so far from the rioby

Concerned that none of these are pure sine wave and can damage your equipment? For ceremonies I’ve been running battery powered Bose S1pros and for my mixer and mic receivers I use a 200 watt portable power bank with AC out and it’s a pure sine wave inverter. Runs long enough for ceremony and cocktails.

While 24Ah is very good for a small battery pack inverter, it's only rated to deliver 90Wh from its 5V DC USB outlets. If you instead drain its max rated 90W from its 120V AC socket, it's only going to last an hour. That makes it more suitable for powering a laptop charger (especially since it's not a pure sine wave inverter) than an 8-15" speaker (which needs clean AC power). A portable pair of speakers + compact sub can easily soak up 500-1000W peak, typically 250W continuous for dance music. For that you need the kind of batteries used to power cordless electric lawn mowers, not those Ryobi batteries rated at 4Ah at 18V, more like their 6Ah 40V batteries. One of those will deliver 240Wh, which combined with a Ryobi 300W AC inverter, should power a small PA for about an hour. I have gotten over 3 hours out of an EGO 3000W AC inverter, powered by four 7.5Ah 56V batteries, delivering about 500W continuous AC power. The major advantage of the EGO 3000W inverter is the hot-swappable batteries, which allows you to recharge replacement batteries from a low-power vehicle inverter. Spoiler warning: these hefty lithium batteries are not cheap...

Bro you have to measure Watt/Hours (wH) because 3,7 volt 100AH is the same as 37 volt 10AH, they have exactly the same wh (watt hour). So you are measuring apples with pears in the video comparing it to a 4ah 18v (72wh) ryobi battery. The omar is 3,7v 24ah = 88,8wh.
