Ah my wish has been answered. Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst two of my very favorite actors and entertainers working together on stage again...I was watching some the old made for television plays I had stubbled upon but had never seen before. James Dean being on a stage acting in plays were something I found on u tube and thankful to them very much ...And I was writing about this very play I saw only once some forty five years ago and was writing about how much it meant for me to see it one more time before I to had passed...And out of curiosity I asked the computer later for "Misbegotten Moon" and bang here it is on u tube. Even though I had forgotten the whole name of the play...Wow I'm in heaven but Dear Lord I'll be with you shortly just a moment more, Sweet Jesus just a moment more...I do so love life...

Colleen Dewhurst is fantastic (funny how in the play it says she does not hear the final HardersIcePond joke but in this production she laughs) over all I saw an amateur production on You Tube I preferred Think LDJIN O'Neil's last great play finished on his 52nd birthday after that he did the Very good 1 act Hughie the good A touch of the poet (where they squeezed two sequels out of his outlines) and this good play he insisted on finishing for his brother where the 3rd act is POSSIBLY the greatest ACT he wrote although Act 4 of Iceman a rival for that!!!

I actually saw this in New York. I was 15 years old and remember how I couldn't move for what seemed like a full minute. Then, as one, the we came to our feet, cheering.

Those of us who revere these two actors are forever grateful for this chance here to see them together in an O‘Neill work. I was lucky enough to see them on stage in a late 1980s revival on Broadway of LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT. Perhaps the 2 greatest O‘Neill actors of their time, IMO.

What a treat! A long, boring play performed by two of the greatest stage actors of our time! I think Robards and Dewhurst have like 8 Tony nominations each. Now we have this for posterity, thank you for posting!

Stunning ... in the hands of masters in ensemble acting.

Robards was an potent epic talent. Watch anything he did, i.e. ‘Once Upon Time In The West,’ ‘Iceman Cometh,’ the 1960s tv production was brilliant! And ofc, thee unique n awesome Ms. Colleen Dewhurst! What can be said? I saw her in the one woman show she did in the 80s - ‘GENE’ about O’Neil’s marriage to his wife during the time he wrote ‘Long Days Into Night.’ Great uploads thanks.

Thank you for posting this. I saw this production on stage when it was in previews in Philadelphia, before it went to New York. I had the oddest luck to be seated next to Jose Quintero, the director, as he was giving notes on the preview to his assistant. The level of alcoholism was a big theme and I remember one whispered note, “Jason, not so much shaking with the glass,” by Mr. Quintero. I never forgot that performance - which was overwhelming - or that night.

I've never seen Colleen Dewhearst in anything that I did not believe every word coming out of her mouth. There were only a few with her type of talent.Thank you for posting this excellent O'Neill play.

Cherry Jones on Broadway came close but she lacked the sheer physical presence of Colleen.

I saw a recording of this production in a Freshman Intro to Theater class in 1975. I fell in love with Colleen Dewhurst and Jason Robards that night with a passion that never faded. I am thrilled beyond words to find it here and rediscover its pleasures. Thank you! ❤

What a treat! Moon is a failed play written at the end of O'Neill's life and can only achieve greatness with fantastically brilliant actors. This production with Robards and Dewhurst has been acclaimed THE definitive version and has never been topped.

Thank you for your instructive and rewarding comment! I commit, as I found this unbelievable version because I wasn't happy with the version I had previously listen to. Anyway, now, we can say that this play is not at all a failure, but a difficult (almost impossible!) to achieve masterpiece! 🙂

Agreed. This play is an almost impossible play to stage, and best experienced by reading it. It’s almost impossible to get the right “trio” of actors who can pull it off.

When I was a teenager in the 80’s I had this big sloppy cardigan I used to wear sometimes and my mom called it my Coleen Dewhurst Moon for the Misbegotten Sweater (although the sweater was more like CD in Ice Castles) But whatever Coleen Dewhurst RULES!
