Watched this back in the 80's on VHS. It was great to find it on You Tube.

This became one of my favorite plays when I saw this on TV. Here we are 40 years later and I'm in the middle of a community theater run of it, where I'm playing Boris Kolenkhov.

OMG - I am so happy to find this film! I saw this recording many years (decades) ago on PBS I think. I loved it so much and I've never forgotten it. There have been a couple of film adaptations of this play, but this is by far the best version. This production opened April 4, 1983 at the Plymouth Theatre, ran for 312 performances. Directed by Ellis Rabb, staring Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst and several other notable actors.

@@alisoncolgrove4349 Again, same here. Saw it on PBS years ago, the end only, with Colleen Dewhurst. I didn't even know what play it was but I figured it out and found it on YT and just enjoyed the whole thing. Can't believe it's almost 40 years old. Miss them all.

I bought a video tape of this in 1989. I watched it several times till the VCR ate it up. It’s just such a feel good, zany, loving depiction of an unconventional family. My favorite moment was when Alice said my mother writes plays because 8 years ago a typewriter was delivered here by mistake.

Thank you so much for posting this excellent version of the movie! I had this play in my collection for years until my drive died, and it wasn't on my backup. I've been looking for it for at least two years since I lost it. So happy to be reunited with it. If you don't mind I'm going to put a copy up on my channel with a copy of your disclaimer. I don't get much traffic, but at least it will be one more place this excellent play can be found. Thanks again, and best wishes.

I love this play. That said there is NO law requiring ANYONE to actually pay a Federal Income Tax. If they are to receive a tax refund. Do the research for yourself. The wealthy have known this for decades. If not a century or more, now...

This is so a thousand times better than the movie! The movie didn’t follow the play whatsoever! For instance, there was no ‘Mr. Poppin’ in the play and where was ‘Miss Wellington’? I would have ❤️d to have seen JEJ playing ‘Grandpa’! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Definitive. A little laugh-trackey mayhaps but study the times in which the Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play premiered. And there's the unmistakable Bill McCutcheon, the one and only Dropo himself.

A wonderful production, first done by Mr. Rabb in the 1960s with APA. Donald Moffat was grandpa. Sadly, this TV thing was directed for the camera by the horrible Kirk Browning, the worst thing that ever happened to ballet, opera, and now this. Dear Mr. Browning, you nitwit - how about some geography - you know - a wide shot so we see the set? Wouldn't that be a swell idea rather than all those insufferable close-ups. This is a stage play, not your ticket to trying to get a movie. This is the poster child for how NOT to direct a play for the camera. We want to see, you know, Mr. Rabb's blocking and staging. Geography, Mr. Browning - it's a wonderful thing and thanks for ruining what should have been a great video of a great play. Shame on you.
