I wrote an article about Charlie Bowman for Fiddler magazine about 10 years ago. He was a great fiddler and an interesting character. Two of his daughters, the Bowman Sisters, were one of the first sister duets in country music.

Hi Steve, I have a 1909 vaudeville theater program from Coney Island featuring Charlie Bowman and "The Blue Grass Boys" - looked him up and found this youtube page. How can I find your article?

@@miked4515 I'm not sure where you can find it. Some of my past articles for Fiddler are available on their web page, but not this one. You might be able to order a copy of the back issue if it isn't out-of-print.

@@SteveGoldfield Excellent article Steve! Looking at this 1909 program again, it says the "Blue Grass Brothers" (not Charlie Bowman specifically) so I wonder if it's some other act, given that Charlie would have been 20 at the time and maybe not at Coney island...? Thanks again!

@@miked4515 In addition to my article, there used to be a web page by two of Charlie Bowman's nephews. I don't know if it is still up. However, one of the two nephews published two book about his uncle. I think I have the 2007 book but not the 2017 edition. Both books are available on Amazon. smile.amazon.com/s?k=charlie+bowman&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

Awesome! This is exactly what my own mama had described during those days when her family would sit around the stove after working in the fields and listened to the radio or perhaps a relative or two would drop by and pick their guitars/banjos.

@hrtoflove Yes its magical to hear these story's about those who came before us I loved hearing my mother tell me about how she and her 3 sisters used to visit their grandfather and cousins in another village ( in Ireland ) My great grandfather entertained the children by clog dancing on the kitchen table, the children slept in a little room filled with straw ( no beds, sheets or blankets ) he'd put them to bed and say Yis are all very good wee children
