The Sea Lamprey is an invasive parasitic fish that is threatening the native fish species of the Great Lakes. We visit the Hammond Bay Biological Station in Northern Michigan to learn more about the lamprey and ways researchers are trying to mitigate the significant danger it poses to the region.

It's a great delicacy in Finland, the price is exorbitant. The only problem is, the lamprey season is very short, so you can't make money on it around the year, but when you do, you really are raking in money. If you catch one, add some salt and smoke it.

I missed the reasoning as to why you don't kill all of the Lamprey male and female. Seems like the logical route to take to me since they are an invasive species. What am I missing? Are they endangered?
@fermiticus4034
@fermiticus4034 4 жыл бұрын
Just speculation here, as I have zero knowledge of lamprey spawning habits.... If they spawn, one on one and the males compete, the bigger/stronger sterile males could "win", which would result in the female dropping her eggs, and they'd go unfertilized...and/or the male that "loses"(not sterile), doesn't get to spawn at all. (That's the only way I can make sense of it, anyway)
@ProGuitar555
@ProGuitar555 4 жыл бұрын
I believe they said that its hard to find all spawning habitats so they just let the sterile male kill the others.

Jeremy wade says other about sea lamprey attacking people. He has interviewed people attacked while swimming in the Great lakes. All this money invested in studies and marking them. Start a mobile fish processing plant and start catching them and shipping them overseas for food. Generate some revenue for the people living in the areas around the Great lakes instead of taxing them more for these studies.

I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life and have never heard of anybody being attacked by a lamprey. Frankly I'm fine with what they are doing with my taxes, and have no interest in subsidizing or supporting such fisheries. If the market had demand for such things, that's fine, but it doesnt really exist and there is no reason to waste time, money and effort when there is no demand. The fine men and women who work on the lakes and protect the lakes against many invasive species do amazing work in keeping our lakes safe and serviceable for us. They deserve all the credit in the world. That's my opinion.

I'm sure I missed something. How does sterilizing the males, then letting them go to hunt for females make them less dangerous??? Catch them, and make fertilizer or somethin'!

I'm guessing it will compete for the females against other males and fertilize the eggs with their sterile sperm

@@burt591 your explanation is best, however since they want to save the native species, why not kill them all? they are going to latch onto to the native fish, wished they saw fit to explain

@@deidradahl2802 Fair enough, they did say it had to do with the fact that the sterile males compete with the fertile males but i suppose they werent too specific. Releasing sterilized males into the wild isnt an unprecedented practice, it is used to combat other parasitic species such as the bot flies in south america.

Let tell you: Lamprey when cooked by a good chef is one of the best meals you will ever have. They are protected in Europe and those pregnant females prices are extremely expensive and I even think that they´re forbidden to be fished.
