I live in the U.S. and I read about it last year. It was shocking that how could this happen in a developed country like South Korea. I know the crowd was huge, but people should have just relaxed and chilled. There are many blames to go around, but the bottom line is many young people lost their lives senselessly. RIP.

I mean not too long ago from this incident, there was a stampede at Travis Scott’s concert where people died as well and that was in the US which is developed too. It happens when the crowd control is not good ,. And the narrow alleyways of itaewon contributed with the loss of crowd control as well
@howarddo8462
@howarddo8462 Жыл бұрын
@@Fartsquad_ A few deaths vs 159 deaths. I wasn't implying anything negative toward South Koreans. All I was saying South Korea got more than enough resources to maintain security and safety for the crowd was that huge.
@Fartsquad_
@Fartsquad_ Жыл бұрын
howarddo8462 Yeah Ik you didn’t mean anything negative ,. But the stampedes were due to similar reasoning . Poor crowd control. It was probably better for the Travis Scott concert because it was an open arena. Whereas itaewon I heard was full of narrow alleyways. So that was probably what led to more death

Halloween was used to be the day for little kids to dress up in their costumes and get free candies. Then, big corporations got involved with all the commercials to make it a day for adults to party. RIP Ms. Lee Sang-eun.

It is the people who buy into the culture of mindless consumerism that overcrowded the streets that day, and some were just unlucky to lose their lives by getting crushed. Big corporations will always value their own interests, and they don't care about the unintended consequences as long as they make profit. People can either do something about the corporate consumerism's dominance on popular culture, or they can engage in the consumerist culture at their own discretion. Either way, one should reflect on the consequences of one's own choices, because ignorance sometimes can be fatal. It is laughable to see majority of Koreans blaming the state for what has occurred with the claim that the state failed to protect the crowd who were just out to enjoy themselves. Just because someone is a victim of an accident doesn't mean he is above any responsibility for what has occurred, and videos like this doesn't achieve much other than emotionally blackmailing the public. If this mother had taught her daughter about the risk of just mindlessly following the popular culture and going along with the crowd, her daughter wouldn't even have been there in the first place, and she may have gone on to achieve her dreams. The mother might be able to avoid guilt by blaming external factors, but that doesn't actually absolve her of what she failed to do as a parent. I hate to be so harsh, but if she lacks the concept of critical self-reflection, she wouldn't have been teach it to her daughter, and her daughter most likely would have gone onto harm herself and others one way or another as a result. While it is unfortunate for her to lose her daughter this way, those that are alive and must live on should seek to learn something positive out of this tragedy, because compulsive display of empathy isn't exactly going to help you live a better life.

This is a very bizarre tragedy, hard to imagine people being crushed to death slowly by other people. Poor communication/coordination because of the loud music, this was the fault of this tragedy, loud music on speakers. True accident, not a fault of a person or people. Can't really blame the state officials for allowing this many people in a tight space, although the train station could have kept track of how many people were going into itaewon and known it was over crowded and stopped taking people there. But still, it was the loud music, should of had a way to interrupt all music and for an official to broadcast on all stereo speakers to coordinate an emergency evacuation. Just as cell phones can send an emergency message by federal or state officials, the speakers should of had a killswitch. Then this will not happen again. I believe the best way this could have happened in the case of the speaker killswitch would have been maybe for the man to stack someone light on their shoulders, like a child or small woman, to allow for more horizontal space to evacuate effectively. Or even for a strong man to stack a woman and child on the shoulders, to allow for even more walking space. But in order for this to work, EVERYone must have followed directions or it would've been certain doom for the man or would've been unobtainable to stack someone all together, since a small amount of room is needed for someone to crawl on your shoulders and it seemed there was no room at all in some spots. It seems a vertical stack of people in this case would allow for more room to move and would have worked if it was coordinated and directed effectively.
@Donnie-ys7vr

How is this not the government fault? Even a small scale event will have security guards controlling the crowd. Mind you, this event was already predicted to be crowded cus its was the 1st event people were allowed to go out and mingle after covid. Their president knew and still went to allocate the majority of the police officer to protect him instead. Heck, even when there were calls calling in for help at around 6pm, there was no police officers dispatched to the scene. It was only until after hours when people call in that there were people dying before the police actually did something

Been to Korea last week and really feel overcrowded even during the weekday. The subway was packed at popular station and they do not have a sense of personal space. The frequency of the subway was fast, like every 5 minutes they will have a train. So I don’t get why why rather be sandwiches than waiting for the next train. And they don’t have a sense of patience, they will just push when someone is slower. I won’t be surprised if such accidents occur again. As sometime I already feel unsafe during my trip there.
