The troubling story of two teenaged brothers, Marc and Jean Wabafiyebazu, caught up Miami's dangerous drug scene. It might never have generated attention had they not been the sons of Canada`s Consul General in Miami. Roxanne Dubé shares her deeply personal story of double loss - one son dead, the other charged with 'felony murder' and potentially facing life in prison.

In case if you wonder what happened, here we go.... The story has a happy ending. He received 8 months Bootcamp and 2 years house arrest and 8 years probation. I think it's the right decision... Better than imprisoning him forever.

That's what he received but in reality the feds picked him up right away and deported him. Federal laws surpass state laws. There was nothing the judge could do about it but she sure tried. I'm glad the feds went and got him, I think she wanted to make this kid an example to other foreigners. It was clear by the evidence that he had no part in the shoot-out.

I'm not defending their actions regarding the drug dealing, but charging the younger one with murder makes absolutely no sense to me. He wasn't in the building and clearly no getaway driver or lookout. He looks so surprised and confused on that surveillance video when he apparently hears the gunshots and they have absolutely no evidence that he knew what his brother was planning to do.

You don't have to be guilty to be convicted. 🤷‍♂️ It has happened in the past and will continue to occur because the justice system and procedure is far from sound! Flaws exist within the current methods of establishing proof of innocence that may lead to innocent individuals enduring more than 25 years incarceration. 🤦‍♂️

@Vixen Feline - You didn't go wrong because, by your own description, you're plainly not running an autocracy, nor ruling by fear. Of course the last word (hopefully wise ones!) goes with the parent(s) but unless they're in imminent danger (if they try and cross the road without looking probably not the best time for a debate on the wisdom of it) parents should discuss and explain to their kids why they are doing something, and why the kid is not able to do or get something, and all the rest of the stuff that crops up on bringing up a child. It helps them become rational, defuses the inevitable resentment that an unwanted decision just handed out by diktat brings.

There is something off with this mom First she moved to Miami, which was very buzzard, everyone knows Miami is full of drug dealers -.- Secondly how come her son was skipping school and she didn't know about it?!' It is a private school and they tell parents EVERYTHING! Thirdly she didn't call or ask anybody about her two sons and went to bed without knowing where were they! How could you sleep if your kids weren't home yet! Thirdly she never shed a tear! She pretended to cry but she never did! Just look at her eyes! She kept her eyes open so tears would come out but guess what the tears never came out! I feel sorry for her kids 💔

I'm a mother too and I can't imagine losing one of my precious babies. But she clearly doesn't really KNOW her kids. I get that your love for your kids can make you only see what you want to see and you can pretend they didn't do anything bad. People who have violent inclinations will seek out that type of music, and that validates those tendencies. It's a feedback loop. It's also a tendency to ascribe blame to external factors. Fact is that these 2 boys were of mixed race, which in practice means they can't fit in with the white world 100% so they falsely assume they can dominate in the black world by their perceived advantage.

@@Littleone124 It's probably different for women. I can only speak for myself, as a man who's never been into any kind of violent music or movies because I feel that real life is violent enough. I mostly listen to Soviet-era Russian and Eastern European disco because it brings me back to a past that really sucked, but that was nevertheless simpler and more innocent than today. In a sense, it's almost like being of mixed race because I'm using Soviet coping techniques in modern Germany, which doesn't always work out. It's also why I feel the need to go back HOME, to Eastern Europe where the music brings me back to an idealised version of that life.

It's obvious that Marc isn't guilty of anything except being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It looks like Jean told him to stay in the car. Unfortunately this incident took place in Florida. The Florida justice system is not at all intimidated by the CBC. I think they welcome the attention from Canada. They will use this high profile case to send a message that Florida will not tolerate violent crime. CBC says that the confession was not recorded on video, but nothing about whether the confession was recorded in audio. If there is no recording at all, the officers testimony should not be admissible.

The biggest problem with all of this - and all other similar stories - is that drugs shouldn't be illegal in the first place. It's a health issue, not a criminal issue. At least 90% of the deaths associated with drugs are a direct result of the fact that they are illegal. Then you add in all the other crime that surrounds drug use and distribution and the cost is phenomenal. All that money spent fighting the pointless War on Drugs could be used to maintain drug treatment centres and providing addicts with clean pharmaceutical grade drugs that are handed out under controlled conditions absolutely free to addicts. It would cost a fraction of the War on Drugs, and the prisons would have room for dangerous criminals. You would also have plenty of money to pay for prevention strategies. Governments are not ignorant of these facts. They don't make drugs illegal for reasons of public safety, etc. They know damn well it causes a lot more problems than it solves.
