Take a deep breath - I had to leave a rockstar life due to a parasite bite 30+ years ago .. by then I had 800+ tracks I just left in a box full of floppy discs for all those years. My daughter grew up not even knowing I had that past .. finally when she was 20, she and my wife gave me an early home studio (complete with everything) so I could re-record all my music. I worked hard beside looking after my company the entire 2022 and manage to re-record 200+ before I was hit by a stroke (blood clot in my brain) on December 18th 2022 .. that halted everything, I lost my company, had to rehabilitate for 15 month until they let me go last week. Things will never be the same but I'm still releasing .. I never mixed / mastered ever before, but I'm doing ok thanks to channels like yours. I feel bad that I made a harsh comment one time when you promoted something at the same time as 500 others ..I was annoyed, but I realize that its you and your descisions .. not ours .. good to hear your reasoning .. I love this channel.

When competing and comparing to others we lose ourselves and become bad copies. Competing against yourself allows one to be unique, this is where the magic happens. Great advice

Make music because you love it. Put in the time and effort if you have it. If you make money on your music congratulations, enjoy it. If you don’t make a dime don’t beat yourself up. Take inspiration from other musicians. Don’t compare yourself to other musicians. Only make music if you love it. If you do and don’t these things you’re setting yourself up for creative sanity and doing the work for an extended period of time is more likely to pay off. I made a deal with myself years back that I’d continue to make music whether I made another dime off of it or not and it completely changed my outlook as a musician. If you’re forcing yourself to do art for fame or riches (maybe unless you’re already famous and want to continue to make money for retirement) you’re slowly driving yourself into a state of creative resentment. Keep up the good work Colt.❤

Great video. With my 40+ years in this business you learn that the only competition is with yourself. I learned that best from my time doing film and live theater sound design. People around you feel when you are trying to out do yourself, that very much shows when you don't compete with those that do what you do.

Davy Jones from the Monkees said “Change the way you look at things, and the things that you look at will change.” I don’t know who said that first but Jones was who I heard it from. My attitude severely re-centered when I heard that tidbit of wisdom.

I can say I’m at a similar place - protecting my energy and time, searching for solutions and spending less time on finding problems. A lot of that perspective changed when our kiddo came into the picture. 11mo old and our whole world has changed - priorities shift and while I enjoy music/video/creating, I want my work to be as efficient as possible and have the most ROI so I can save time and spend that with my family! I value that so much more now than I did a year ago.

I constantly struggle, proactively looking to others for inspiration, instead of looking inside for my music. Inspiration is absorbed through your life in a subliminal unconscious manner. The first track I recorded really felt like mine. I played it for others and several said that’s clearly influenced by New Order. I hadn’t seen it, and initially I was crushed and didn’t want to record anything else. I hadn’t wanted to sound like anyone else, but we are everything we have been through. The influence came out from everything I had absorbed over the years. Literally ten years later I’m about to release new music. I record the music I like making, I don’t even try to hear anything other than me in it. If others hear an influence and that helps them like it, and connect with it great!

100% my dude! Thank you for sharing this... It brought the book of Philippians to my mind. If you haven't yet, you should check it out! "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Philippians 4:8 "Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves." Philippians 2:3 "Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead" Philippians 3:13 "And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns." Philippians 1:6

My biggest ‘competition’ as far as nearby studio at the same level (commercial studio in a commercial building) is owned by one of my oldest friends. Our attitude has always been ‘there is plenty of work out there for everyone’. Go find it! If I’m successful, and he’s successful, that’s better for our area and for our industry. It draws more business to both of us. When I had the opportunity to go out, mixing arenas for national acts my studio work slowed down considerably because I wasn’t there pushing and the Engineer’s I had in the studio weren’t me and not financially invested in the buildings success. So clients went to my buddies studio. Good for him! He took care of them. Some became his clients now. Some remained mine because they were taken care of by him but thru my studio. Lesson here is take care of the client. Build your reputation for being dependable and a resource for others. When you serve others, you are lifted up. Just like it says in the Bible.

I look at what you said at another angle: service and passion. If I come to mixing and mastering as service provider, I will compete with everyone else no matter what. It’s because now mixing and mastering become my bread and butter. I see Hollywood showbiz operates that way, so I’m not surprised. In fact, service providers compete with each other, and that’s normal. Of course you were talking about the “how”, not the “what”, but “compete with yourself” is just one side of the coin. On the other hand, if I come to mixing and mastering as passion, I’ll compose, arrange, record, mix and mastering my own music. And this way, I compete with no one. I just enjoy my own music as a passion and it’s not my survival tool. When mixing and mastering is my passion, I “reference” other tracks/people but do not compete with them. Most people come to mixing and mastering music as service providers rather than passion, i.e., they do it for a living. Passion play very minimal or none to this. (It’s coz not everyone can compose, arrange, record, mix and master all together). How do I know it? It’s because they have to do this job to earn money. When you have to do something for a living, it’s more like duty, not passion. For instance, when people ask the question, “Is it a good investment to buy Soothe 2 or Bloom?” (at $209 a piece), they speak from service provider perspective because now they have to think how to get $209 or $418 back and more. Music for passion people like me don’t care. Gold Clip, $250, boom. Got it. Soothe 2, $209, boom. Got it. Lol. Let’s not talk about hardware there, coz it’ll add up to hundred thousand of dollars very quick. Lol.

Attitude is everything. It definately matters how hard you work and that's something you should always be improving on. How you make people feel is more important than anything. But you need to extend that logic to yourself. Be flexible and kind to yourself as well. How you act after you identify a problem says more about you than you think. I find that if I'm ever mad or jealous ( which we all feel) I just need to take a minute to think how those feelings don't help anyone, especially myself. Never assume something that has no evidence of being so, because you'll drag yourself down very quickly that way. Thank you for talking about this. It's a very important topic that no one ever touches on.

Hey Colt, great video! I've been watching you since 2019. I love all your casts...the reviews...the mixing tips. But the videos like this one, IMHO, are JUST AS IMPORTANT. Our mental aspect may be even more critical than our engineering abilities. After all, our perspective/perception determines so much of how we behave. YES! These videos are helpful. Many people, like me for example, view you as successful. That's why we sought you out and continue to revisit your channel. Positive mental energy, and don’t get in the way of the musicians creative process. Sometimes I think I found the best drum sound or guitar sound and the band doesn’t like it…. Hit delete track and start again 😂 In the beginning I could be agitated but now I understand that I deliver a service, I’m a mix engineer and not a recording engineer or a producer. Get that ego out of the way and don’t try to push my influence on them. I love to see the band performing live before I mix so I can get a feeling of what they are trying to achieve. Getting to know the musicians and their energy and thought process is very important imo. Also when you get older you learn how to cope better with different people and situations I think 🤔

Hey, Colt, thank you for this! Very timely for my own thoughts - I am running an on-location recording service in Moscow, Russia, but it is theoretically worldwide- I specialize in choral music, classical work, so there is a lot of on-location work. You are absolutely correct. My thought pattern has not been terribly consumed with other engineers here, because there are a lot of great ones and relatively little work so far as I can tell, so my studio work is supported by "more regular" kinds of work locally (editing and translation of texts, teaching English, etc.) But that negative thinking still gets me even there, and it is certainly wrong. I appreciate that you explained it straight - I get the sense that you are a Christian, and a very common sense guy, so the framing helps me. I do try always to beat my last mix - this is such a fascinating art for me, the creation of beauty, and I appreciate so many people's efforts, regardless of the musical genre. My hope is to get better and better each time. It was good to know that this is the right motive; I do not want to compete with anyone. I love collaboration - I think my supporting someone else's success is good for me - "a rising tide lifts all boats" - and I feel better about myself not being snipey and miserly - I learn things from *everyone* so anything I get to do is a gift in this work. All the best to you!

I used to work to SAM ASH back in 07-09. I told had my first audio interface and Sony Laptop and what I did was I told myself I would record freely until I build myself up to record for a price later. I used to record jam sessions then would go home to practice mixing. Through out the years I had gotten better. It did open many doors for me I record jazz even recorded an orchestra which I never imagined!!! I told myself around 2011 as well that there would be things I can be part of and things I can't handle so I wouldn't be defensive if I didn't get opportunities. The thing about now is I'm active I know how to move on downtime but it bothers me when people are careless about the work and want to be scene. I feel as though sometimes bands are careless. I feel guys that are Engineers don't put effort in things but they ask you how are you making it because they feel like you're doing more than them. I could go on and on I think it's about your dedication and doing what you need to do to keep the work flowing. I get inspired by you and other Engineer people I follow on here that show different ways of approaching the recordings we all do. I can't be jealous I just be like hey one day will be my turn!!!!

I don’t talk about budget gear on this channel. $2500 for that last piece of gear is affordable in the grand scheme of things even though it’s a lot of money. I’ve never done a video on a single piece of gear that cost more than $10,000. Not even close. so literally your entire comment is incorrect. If you want to see videos on budget gear, unsubscribe, and go find it elsewhere.

This is plain ignorance. Anyone who has been in music for a while knows Colt is on point about $2500 being affordable. In the professional world, when it comes to production of music and film, proper budgeting is practically non-negotiable. If you think $2500 is bad, wait until you hear about how much folks had to spend before the digital age. Pro sounding records can be expensive to produce that’s why professional studios and record labels exist. No matter how skilled I am, I can’t sound like Drake with a $15 Temu mic, a Focusrite interface, and a poorly treated room. Colt is making an effort to save us wasted time on trying to polish dirt, because it is an indefinite rabbit hole. I myself spent years wondering what the “secret” the pros were using to get “that sound”. The real secret is: proper gear, a proper room, proper ears, and proper technique. You’ll be surprised at the minimal amounts of mixing the pros do to get the sound they want because they tracked everything with good microphones, preamps, and converters in a treated room. Take the advice Colt is trying to give, it will save you years of time.

More successful, I don’t know but at least some viewers will become more peaceful 😉. Another big part is the old « it’s not what you know but who you know ». Networking is super important in an industry where everyone knows everyone… (on local scenes)

I really like the audio on your talking head, warm with just enough saturation and compression. What's the signal chain?

Love this video. However, people have to take this advice with a grain of salt. Comparing oneself to others can be detrimental but it can also be beneficial. Sometimes as humans we can get caught in being in our own bubble and our perspective is limited. The words “better” or “good enough” start to lose meaning without a reference or context. Friendly competition can push the envelope and lead to innovation but bitterness and negativity can sour the benefits of competition. For example, LeBron James wouldn’t become the player he is without trying to outdo the greatness of Michael Jordan.

Don’t compare yourself to others. It will make you either vain or bitter. Wisest words and really the other guy has NOTHING to do with or your journey. Completely irrelevant.

a lot of this music industry is controlled by evil people who love money. i started with trap beats, then went to house, but now i think im gonna end up at christian music. the world loves music that supports paganism and if you give into that, then you can make it. imo
