I installed for 48 years and he's wrong!! Your Iron is ribbed for a purpose, it because the grooves straddles the ribs on the tape!!! Common sense!! A tool that Crain ust to include with the purchase of your iron to clean it because a dirty iron (glides) on top of the tape beads an they don't get melted completely!! Hence seam my come apart during install or in a few yrs especially after being cleaned!! So CLEAN YOU IRON REGULARLY!! I know what I'm talking about!!

I used to buy the nylon heat sheilds for my irons. The iron may say cool top but nothing works as well as those heat sheilds. I could be wrong but it seems like its hard to find good heat tape, my favorite Used to be the Roberts with the gold foil. You can pick up a roll of tape and ck for weight, I like the wider bead 3 inch. Been using xk50 lately. Its not the same as it used to be.

Great video!! It has been so long since I needed a new iron, I forgot all about running on heat tape first. It also reminded me that when your tray gets loaded with old glue, take it off the iron and put it in the freezer overnight. Take it out the next morning and drop it flat on a concrete surface from over your head, and the glue pops right out. You may have to drop it 2x for all of it to pop off. No mess and no getting burned. I think I may have learned that from my CFI training years ago.

I preferred a flat iron, so as to avoid puddles. Helps with telegraphic. Also preferred XU 90 seam tape. Can run iron on 2 or lower to avoid heat transfer.

Thanks for demonstrating. I had no clue. Mine happened to do better at first without glue. I mest up about halfway bec I kept it on there to long bec I guess like your saying it picked up all the glue then I had to tear the tape off halfway and retape and it still didn't work out correctly bec there's a small peice not glued down.. so I took regular glue and glued it down.. and still don't look right. I'm probably gonna cut the small area in the door way to the hallway. Bec this reason.. so thanks for your help. I'm gonna practice with the tape and iron before I try again... also you want to make sure you get your cut right bec you'll have missing carpet and you'll see the bottom off carpet in some places in the carpet seam

Seam weight is a must! 10 pounds is all necessary!! I have an old tool box and took the tray, it's filled with various bags of nails.. On the bottom I have a piece of Luan glued to the bottom which pulls the heat an moisiter from the carpet yarn an the weight uniformly presses clue into the backing of carpet!!!

I must say I never new about breaking inn a new iron!! Worked with a guy that after a seam he'd wipe his iron on a piece of scrap carpet before putting it away to keep it clean so it didn't build up with glue and smoke when he used it the next time. Yet another littlest gem of a tip that most customers would never think about when we come to lay carpet thanks p.s what happened to one of your vids it was deleted?

+Wilmer Molina The 893L has a seam sealing Mechanism on it that allows the hot melt glue from the iron to seep up in between the two pieces of carpet and weld them together, I have not tried that out yet but if it works as they say it should be pretty awesome

Some guys might think you wasted 2 ft of tape. Instead of throwing away that tape, just cut off a length of tape including that portion that you just remove some adhesive from. Put it underneath the scene as you normally would without cutting that section off. Start your seam from the end that hasn't been heated. When you get to the far end of the seam, the iron will it be fully loaded with glue as it enters onto this first part of the role where you loaded up your iron. As your iron moves on to this last part of the seam they'll be plenty of adhesive left to make a strong seam in this last two feet.

lmao I'm a DIY first timer here. Got me a new seam iron today. Bought a 65' roll of tape for $8. I don't think that one time 25 cents of 2' wasted seam tape is really going to break the bank.
