You have quite a range of trees around you Nathan & some very good sized ones at that. Very interesting run down on the measuring scale for helping you calculate your expected yield & how much to offer for the lumber. Thanks for that, while I will never need to use one it is always interesting to find out what is available. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

I see a tree stand over your left shoulder at the largest walnut. It has to be great to live where there is such a diverse species of trees. I went to Seattle last week and looked in on a wood store, they had some very large walnut crotch slabs with prices in the mid to high 4 digits, and a straight grained knot free walnut 20 inches across, 8/4 x 16 foot. That was $2600. Have a great day, love your videos.

Always good to check your eye after the tree is felled and bucked. Scale each log and run all the logs from one tree through the sawmill. Takes time and practice to be accurate. The sawmill doesn’t lie about how many board feet are in a tree. Great video!

I never sold a board until i retired 3 years ago and started selling and cutting logs. It has paid for it self many times over. My only regret in hindsight is I wish I had bought a bigger WM sawmill model but the LT 15 has been a faithfull machine.

From a fellow Tennessean (Sumner County). I really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work. I wanted to point out though, that when using the diameter scale, you are supposed to keep your head still, only moving your eyes. When you move your head to read the diameter, it's causing you overestimate the true diameter.

Tulip is a beautiful tree, the slabs are blue, red, and green. The sun will bleach it but if you use it for indoor use it will hold it's color quite a while. This was a very interesting video, and I hope you make more on tree identification, and also feature samples of the cut wood. Black Locust in mid-Michigan is a yellow wood that takes very nice highlights when finished with boiled linseed oil or walnut oil. I've made cutting boards in the shape of the lower peninsula out of 4 quarter stock and find the dried wood to be very hard and very suitable for cutting boards. Had a huge Hackberry tree blow down in a local park - it was braced with more than 8 wires in the canopy, and easily 4 ft in diameter, and probably 8- 90 feet tall. The city foresters estimated it at 150-200 years old, which makes it part of the virgin forest from before the white pines were all cut to rebuild from the fire in Chicago. I made some Hackberry bowls on my lathe, and while not a beautiful grain structure, they were nice. Oh, and walnut bowls are always very well received.

I absolutely love your videos. You impress me is someone that goes over and above to learn about nature in the out of doors. My hat goes off to you. I live in Michigan and M A state-certified trapping instructor as well as I animal damage control agent in my spare time. I always get concerned when I see one or more opossums dying without any obvious reasons. Opossums are one of the most Hardy animals there is with a lower than normal body temperature for mammals and are resilient to many poisonous snakes and such. My experience in handing in possums that died in unexplained numbers during a short period of time was that it was due to poison. Please be careful whenever you see this hearty animals die in numbers of any type. There's a reason and a serious one for it. When they take roll call after the apocalypse I suspect that there will be possums, coyotes, cockroaches and submarine Commanders and vast numbers, but not much of anything else.

Please, when you harvest these trees please replant the same species in the same general area... as they can be harvest by your son or the next person... there are nurseries that just grow trees on line or maybe a local one... just think of it as part of the cost of doing business.... maybe before you retire you can harvest the next generation of these trees with your son.... they are not that expensive to do... if you own a three farm then it will be easy to keep the on going process and free lumber....Nice grove of walnut trees.........
