A "narrower" boxing stance for fixing balance and the straight right... (not just for beginners)

Yep, GOG is gradually coming back ("gradually" is the word, as this old man has to get back in shape now, following freaking COVID), and here is a video on how a narrower stance (from back to front) and a less wide stance in general will help with balance, pop, combinations and in this vid the straight right. Also in this vid is a tip on how to "teach yourself" by practicing in the opposite stance to get the details/fundamentals down, and then switching back to your normal stance with those details and mechanics still in your head. Enjoy, and don't feel the need to throw at 100 percent when you are working out the kinks. If you find you are pushing your punches, go back and concentrate on fundamentals, balance and being loose. Trying to punch at 100 percent the wrong way just leads to more pushing.

Damn. Yeah, you might be the best teacher of mechanics I’ve seen online

Hey--appreciated, but not going to compare myself to other guys out there. There are some really smart guys on the tube (and there are some that seem iffy to me).

I think the wide stance also takes away the ability to use the natural rythym to move around as it over exaggerates the shifting of the weight front the front foot to the back foot when punching slipping or weaving let alone stepping and shifting. I also find it hard to push off the back foot when jabbing when I'm in a wide stance compared to a narrower stance, Love this video Conrad!

Thanks! Yes, I agree on all points, but for some reason you see even a lot of pros in a very wide (from front to back) stance these days. I'm not sure why. Some of it may just be that we are having more and more very tall, skinny fighters for their weight classes, and they get into a "low" stance to fight shorter guys, and that brings them "low and wide," but still... I dunno. If you watch old vids of even Hearns sparring, it's surprising (well, not to old guys like me) that he is not in a wide stance at all for his spider-like frame. In fact, his footwork and boxing skills were underrated, as a lot of people focus mostly on his power.

Np! This is one you practice, but don't overthink in sparring. If you overthink your stance while sparring, you will get blasted. If you practice footwork drills and keep yourself from getting too wide, you will naturally move and punch better, but it will take time. Just put in the work every day, listen to your coach, but don't try to "force moves" while sparring. Let your fundamentals come naturally in sparring--after you put in the work.

Thanks, Lincoln! It's going to be a while before I'm really back in shape, due to freaking COVID, so they may be a bit slow in coming. Benji (the black-and-white beagle) is also dealing with some real probs due to eating about 25 inches of dental floss--so he may be off the vids for a while too. Looking at possibly and operation tonight on him. Strange times, but pushing on through.

Check out Nonito Donaire in his fight against Inoue with regard to stance, balance and not only his use of a straight right (something he added late in his career, really), but also his infamous hook. Phenomenal fighter (especially for an "old guy"), and this is one of the best fights I've ever seen: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmbLia2qac9gjZI

Hello,do you have any drill for relaxation?
@gogboxing5655
@gogboxing5655 Жыл бұрын
Hi--I assume you mean relaxation during boxing or to calm nerves before a match? I find the best "drill" is to have a good trainer to talk to you/get you warmed up before a match. Apart from that, do your rounds of jump rope every day (3 x 3 min) and don't think about anything but practicing jump rope--i.e. two legs, double skips, crosses, switching to jump rope backwards--and just hit zen mode. If you mean general relaxation--I'm afraid I don't. Kind of not my thing. But a trainer that talks to you, does some padwork before your fight, etc., will do wonders.

@15:07 "you throw like..." Like you were optimized for fine motor coordination (as most born with XX chromosomes are) as opposed to gross motor coordination (as most born with XY chromosomes are), I think is what you were instinctually trying to say.
