One thing I like about this guy is that he has a healthy sense of perspective. His civilian wife freaks over a simple scheduling conflict for an evening out, and he's got enough on the ball to tell himself "If this is the worst thing my wife has to deal with, I did something right." A lot of people, they don't have that perspective and it makes their lives... not pleasant.

Extreme ownership is a great book
@alanfike5 жыл бұрын
A warning for anyone reading this [that is to say, everyone who is reading this comment should read Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink]: he kinda writes it for the white-collar, out-of-touch corporate executive, many of whom I presume to be in a rut with their company simply because they're out of touch. Well, what this means is, it comes off a bit like a children's weekly reader. In his defense, he structures the chapters very concisely, with an introduction, a story, the lesson and how it applies to, well, corporate America I guess. But I argue that *MOST* of us aren't stuffy, out-of-touch corporate executives who have picked up the book to maybe apply his lessons to our own lives, to attaining our own dreams and goals. So ultimately, expect Extreme Ownership to *sometimes* sound like he's over-explaining some things, or that the lessons are custom-catered to these executive types. Which, again, in his defense, those are the people with whom he spoke in putting together the lessons for the book. It really turned me off, though, and I can't really put my finger on why but "patronizing" seems like an accurate sense that I get. I think if I knew this going in, I would have finished it by now. Instead, it's collecting dust because I've been putting it off. The fact is: Jocko doesn't think we're stupid. He was just trying to make his stories and lessons vividly clear, which he does, and it's an amazing book for that.
@110gotrek5 жыл бұрын

It's really not difficult to point out what's wrong in office hierarchies. They put people directly into management roles who have no idea what goes on below them and no interest in learning. Then those people do the old "We're going to do things my way because that's how I justify my salary." and become impediments to efficiency. You can't tell them "But I've been here 20 years and I do things this way for a reason." Imagine the army making someone a drill sergeant who's never even been through basic training and you know how the office world works.
@dougn47095 жыл бұрын
And Jocko would say to the employees that have to deal with those bad managers: "Good. Now take on more responsibility and lead up the chain." Crappy offices are crappy offices due to bad leaders/managers and due to bad subordinates who just bitch and moan and don't do anything about it. Don't be a victim, be an agent of change.
@tarn11354 жыл бұрын
That’s somewhat true. When I took over the management of an office I spent the first month learning everything they did up till then. I talked to the people who were their the longest to see what they thought and what they would like to see changed, after I implemented changes not all of them were what the people wanted but at the end of the day that office worked and wasn’t circling the drain. Most important thing I think is having an open door policy, people always work harder when they think they can speak without the worry of retaliation.

It would be a mistake to paint Willink as a partisan. He has his unique views like anyone else. If he were interested in making political pronouncements, he is perfectly capable of doing it on his show. And yet he doesn't. Because like most of us who aren't following politics like it's a reality soap opera, especially those of us who follow Willink's example, have OTHER occupations. I used to be a field manager at a grassroots office. There are plenty of ways to be active in political issues, but they're work, so people stick with the chatty chat social media. I get the compulsion, but I don't see Jocko doing either of making political pronouncements on his Twitter page, nor has he brought up any political involvement on his podcast. It's safe to say: to drag Jocko Willink on a right-wing podcast, expecting that he has any intention of promoting the Libertarian fairy tale that men with Richard Spencer haircuts have evoked for us with their tiki torches in Charlottesville, is to find.. *ANOTHER* thing coming.

Jocko should really reach out to Alcoholic Anonymous, or Vice versa! He has a lot of wonderful, inspiring things to say but it all comes down to personal responsibility. Personal Responsibility is such a huge foundation in Recovery. I think a lot of veterans who struggle and even civilians in AA could learn a lot from him. Not saying Jocko is an alcoholic but his personal responsibility message, could be very beneficial to ALOT of veterans that struggle.
@cybertater52365 жыл бұрын
The only study on AA that I've heard of found that AA is not more effective than not going to AA. It appears to be completely useless, AA refuses to show their success and failure rates or perhaps even to track them. It appears to be a taxpayer funded religious institution, they claim not to be religious, but they do seem to suggest releasing to a higher power which is basically new age.
@kiwisquaw235 жыл бұрын
@@cybertater5236 I have never thought of it, in that way? Especially in regards to New Age/ Religion? In saying that, I think if you have a supportive community that all have the same goal, the chances of success are much higher! I think that is why SEALS are so successful, they all share a common goal, and when one wants to deviate from that goal in a moment of lapse, the community will be there to help, so the common goal is achieved.
@cybertater52365 жыл бұрын
@@kiwisquaw23 It sounds great. But the fact they don't publish any statistics on their success implies that it only sounds great. It's a waste of money and time unless it actually works, which there is no published evidence of, to my knowledge. It just sounds good. My understanding is that the rates of people quitting in AA are the same as without any intervention.
@kiwisquaw235 жыл бұрын
@@cybertater5236 I haven't seen studies myself either, but I have never really looked to be honest. It would be nice to have an actual study done, so that everyone could determine for themselves.

Best question: How much is innate vs learned? I'd have liked to hear more detail. I'd also like to hear more about how the political rhetoric affects the troops on the ground. Wish the interview were longer. I like Dave's show because he's a good listener and genuinely curious about people who are far different from him. Fresh air in this crazy tribalistic society awash in agenda driven propaganda.

The best government educator the military.
@Xpistos5105 жыл бұрын
Skora the Reckless, true. But so are NASA training programs, and other trade-oriented training programs. But aside from the federal military academies that award bachelors, there are some prestigious/quality State Universities that don’t get enough credit by mainstream folks - like UCLA, TAMU, ASU, Rutgers, UVA, UMich, UCB, William and Mary, GIT, UTex, UCDavis, UCONN, UNC, Baruch, SUNY, CUNY, Temple, VMI, ASU, and others. So it’s not so much a matter of whether it’s government, but whether the curriculum is useful, necessary, regulated, and run by QUALIFIED and experienced educators. But I agree with your premise, the military is one of America’s best educators. I CAN testify to that as one who serves. I just don’t think that civilians should NEED a rigorous, authoritarian style education to need a good one. Nor should they need to waste hundreds of thousands on an elitist waste of time like Harvard. The Ivies are too overrated considering you can get a good education elsewhere.

I work with many different Sheriff's departments. It's one of the only areas where I am not sure democracy is is the best choice. I think we'd be better off if a board of supervisors appointed the most qualified candidate. What I see are a bunch of good old boys who are essentially responsible to no one. Some departments are sloppy from A to Z.
