DUDE that comment re: Mistborn and “this is how Atium should look”: exactly! As much as I’d love a live action adaptation I just don’t think the magic system’s nuances could be captured as thoroughly and beautifully as they could with, say, this kind of animation.

You are in for one incredible journey. This show is fantastic - from the animation, the characters, the action, to the blend of historical and fiction - it really is a work of art. And no, it's definitely NOT a kids' show. :P So many shots throughout this series were breathtaking. I would pause the show and/or rewind it just to look at a gorgeous background shot again and again. Even the title cards are unique to each episode, and beautifully done. I'm going to enjoy watching your reactions to this show as much as I know you are going to enjoy it! 😊

Little trivia, but meteoric swords/blades did actually exist, even at that time period, they just were rare and considered gifts from the gods. The meteor would be made into amazing blades, as they were a better metal than the ones normally used at the period. You can find a few nowadays, but they are, of course, expensive. Just look it up a little, as this isn't just some crazy idea the show came up with.

So glad you guys are finally watching this masterpiece! There's a shot in the next episode I want to screengrab and have on the wall. The art and animation truly look and feel like nothing else in the medium. When you've finished the show you can find a few videos on KZbin that speak with the art director and stunt coordinator. It's well worth a watch but it has spoilers for later episodes. Enjoy the journey of the Blue Eye Samarui.

I’ve mentally narrowed it down to the three most likely possibilities, but am resisting the urge to guess which one because I don’t want to accidentally spoil anything. Hopefully, if the moment you want is included in next week’s reaction, you’ll comment with a timestamp it so I can see if I’m right.

Speaking of hand made goods, the only way you can own a katana in Japan is if it is made by shita-kitae, or folding steel. A more modern blade made of homologous steel is considered a weapon. Where as a blade made by folding steel is considered art, and so you can own a piece of art. Hand crafted items are highly valued and although often a small part of the economy, japan still has a highly skilled tradition in handcrafted items.

Like Arcane, the animation is primarily from "reference" - i.e. animators looking at filmed sequences and then hand animating them. There are a few youtube videos where the creators are interviewed. "Big Vic Media" has three which are good. Also like Arcane, the animation studio is French.. but not the same one.

This is such a great show, it blows me away how completely underrated it is. Just as a note, don't be too hard on Taigen for his post-engagement whore party. Prostitution was considered a completely normal thing in feudal Japan by both men and women, and if Akemi had walked in on that, she wouldn't have been mad or thought anything strange about what was happening, The Japanese of this time period had very different views on sex that are alien to Western eyes. In fact, in most respects, the average Japanese person in this time period was happier, better adjusted, and more fulfilled than we are today.

I personally have 2 swords, a practice wooden sword like we see in this serie,5 sets of throwing knives, 4 different Tomahawks, a set of Dark Knight Batman throwing stars, a pair of Robin throwing stars, a set of actual throwing stars, 7 karambits, 20+ various knives including one that is designed to become a spear with twistable removal handle, a pair of Sai's, and a crossbow with 27 bolts.

I think the reason the horses are kind of broad/thick isnt just aesthetic but it’s because most of the horse breeds “created” in Japan are pretty small and stocky in comparison to the European/middle eastern horse breeds we’re used to seeing in media + horse racing. The stockier breeds actually look a lot more like the wild horses currently/historically found in Asia.

i think the word you're looking for is androgynous. I dont think she's meant to be non-binary at all. But if you think of it a lot of young male characters in anime ARE often voiced by female voice actors so i admit i too was confused if they were going for a you male character or a slightly tomboyish female character.

Kids are little sociopaths, bastards. Technically ponies, I think. As I recall the distinction is not based specifically on genetics, but height. That being said, the average height of horses in large parts of East Asia was pretty low, maybe until they started importing wellbred horses from Europe, and cavalry was not a big focus of the Imperial Japanese Army at that time. Anyways, in the 1600s, shorter, stockier ponies in Japan, as well as China. Even the famous Mongolian horse was a short, stocky pony, unlike the gigantic European destrier or the tall and lean Arabian. It is weird to note that pumpkins are endemic to North America, and therefore they didn't exist in Japan or Asia in the 1600s. Probably had barely made it over to Europe by then. For all that we associate potatoes with certain European cuisines, they were rather unpopular for along time, although probably quicker in Ireland (because closer to the first importers, their coloniser, England), into the 1700s. Need to rewatch and listen what word they use, but the native Japanese gourd is the kabocha.

What's so cool about this show is that it flips the otherness of being biracial. From a European/American POV, BES is "other" because they're half Japanese. Here, in isolationist Edo Japan, their whiteness makes them "other." It's such an interesting paradigm shift.
