I love how Ringo is actually clever, thoughtful and deep. In many shows the "simple" character is mostly just dumb but has a "heart of gold". He actually says some very beautiful layered things. "I can help greatness" "My whole life has been a battle". Our society is really big on "You can do anything you set your heart to!" and he has a very refreshing, "Know your limitations, and then do what you can to reach what you want" mentality that is way more down to earth and tangible.

I appreciate that Clarus was kind about Nerdy not knowing about black teeth, I also didn't know about it. Cuz when she didn't know about the "Book of Destiny" Nerdy didn't let it go as fast xD. And yeah, it was a thing of status. But also, they essentially either permanently or temporarily created a shield around their teeth that protected them. They did it during puberty with adult teeth (process: "they dyed their teeth using kanemizu, a solution made from ferric acetate, created from soaking iron filings in vinegar, and tannins, derived from vegetables or tea) which worked like sealants so that their teeth would last until old age. So it became a standard of "This is no longer a girl and is now a married woman". I looked it up and apparently Queen Elizabeth just had black teeth cuz they rotted though, but it still became a thing of status because sugar was expensive and it was a display of "look how much sugar I can afford".... So yep... somehow cavities became a sign of status amongst the wealthy x_X

In India there is a weapon called the pata, it is a sword that has a built-in hand and forearm guard that extends straight from the arm, and so involves no movement of the wrist, they could definitely make something like that

'Ohaguro' , The culture of dyeing teeth black is a custom from the Heian period to the Meiji Restoration, and it is a popular makeup method among royal and noble women. At that time, it was difficult to maintain white color due to poor dental hygiene, and yellow teeth were painted black because they did not match the white powder face. It also allowed us to hide uneven teeth. It is also said that the dyes used to dye teeth were effective to some extent in preventing tooth decay. In ancient times, not only women but also male nobles could dye their teeth black.

The naked shingi collection festival still happens... check out the Hadaka Matsuri
@Saphthings
@Saphthings 8 ай бұрын
Sad to find out that the real festival has no women and that in 2024 they finally allowed 40 selected women to join, when the show made it seem so inclusive lol. Ironically in a show that really displays the sexist double standards I'm surprised they changed it for the show. Thanks for the information!

@@Saphthings In the time the show takes place Japan wasn't as prudish as it is now about public female nakedness. Onsen (hot springs) were often mixed, etc. I think it wasn't until the mid-1800s, the US forcing Japan open and western ideas of "decency" influenced (first) the upper classes, that women began being restricted from festivals like these.
@Saphthings
@Saphthings 8 ай бұрын
@@trollnystan I meant I read up and from ancient times and until now it was not allowed. In fact I looked it up more and searched more from Japanese articles and you're not wrong, but not right. I wish you were more right but once again research disappointed me about the treatment of women :/. The british and christianity made censorship and nudity a bad thing yes, but for women it's been mostly the same just like in every society. Here about the festival: "One of the biggest and oldest festivals is the Owari Ōkunitama Shrine Hadaka Matsuri held in Inazawa, where the festival originated over 1300 years ago. Every year, men participate in this festival in hopes of gaining luck for the entire year. The most famous part of the festival is when the shin-otoko (神男) enter the stage and has to find a way back to the shrine, called naoiden. The participating men must try and touch the shin-otoko to transfer their bad luck to him. During the night time ceremony, all the bad luck is transferred in a charcoal coloured giant mochi. The black mochi is made with rice mixed with the ashes of the burned Omamori from last year. The mochi is then buried in a secret location in the nearby forest.[1] The men participating only wear a fundoshi and tabi. The festival has been regarded as off-limits to women since it was first held in the town about 1,250 years ago, but organisers have allowed a group of about 40 women to take part on 22 February 2024" So even in the year 774 they already had the whole "women shouldn't be naked with us" mentality.

SPOILER - - - - - - - - - - - I'm still wondering if the fourth one, Violet, is the father, since he's supposed to be dead (but nothing is preventing the show from revealing they survived) that makes almost certain no one can guess who the father is. Either way, there's more to the story with Violet.

You said it right - this show is wonderful historical fiction, blending elements of the Edo period and presenting a mostly Eastern style story, but written from a more contemporary Western viewpoint that shows itself on occasion. Also, the show handles nudity and sex in a very mature way and is not gratuitous for the sake of being. It brings a sense of genuine realism to the show to contrast the over the top power fantasy violence, and it all works together with the stunning visuals and art style to tell an incredible story that builds and gets better with each episode. Looking forward to watching your reactions to the next episode!

So a few things, kami means god(s) in Japanese. Kevin Dart was the lead background designer for this show, he is best known for designing the backgrounds on Steven Universe and Powerpuff Girls Go. He also has a number of shorts posted on YT for his original character Yuki 7. And I could be wrong but I believe he was referencing the legendary Disney background designer Eyvind Earle when it came to style (I may have had to rewatch a couple parts of the show because I was too busy gawking at the backgrounds😊). Also prior to Christianity’s spread through Japan onsen’s weren’t divided by sex, most of the rest of the world was comfortable with nudity and didn’t hypersexualize the opposite sex. It was the Christians who created shame. And lastly, when it comes to Japan, yes, there’s probably a festival happening somewhere.

Katanas, or most combat swords, probably can't cut thru big, thick trees like that. Even battle axes would have trouble, a battle axe is not design the same way as a felling axe, and splitting axes are another thing too. Different thicknesses, angles, mass of the blade, these are all different depending on the use. Dane axes (some of the more popular styles of "great axes") are quite light and thin. On the other hand, lotsa pollaxe blades, which don't necessarily have an axe blade, can have blades never meant to be sharpened. Pollaxe means to knock something down, not something with an axe blade on a pole. Poll in this case means head, as in you smack something, like cattle, in the head, to kill it, with a hammer or whatever, or counting heads, as in taking a poll. Tangent there for how weird some of this stuff can be, anyways, pollaxes that do have axe blades don't necessarily have blades that were ever sharpened, lotta evidence based on surviving examples. Maybe they didn't need to be sharp to fulfill their purpose, which was mostly fighting people in plate armour, so you just needed a chiseled edge? We don't really know, but some of the specifics can get complicated. Still, cool training montage stuff, just yeah, probably not possible for a tree that thick. Oh, and yes, blackening teeth was a big thing for along time in Japan, and other parts of Asia and the Americas. In Japan it was mostly associated with married or mature people of the upper ranks of the nobility. It was not gender specific and it lasted basically into the 19th century, although to some degree it's still a thing.

Main character's name is Mizu, which means water in water in Japanese which not only keys into the obvious eye color connection is thematic for the fighting and other stuff that comes up later. As a mixed race person myself I like the way they present it. I never had to deal with that level of alienation obviously but the feeling of otherness and exclusion is real. very well done. Great show, great reaction. I really dug that Nerdy immediately keyed into the nudity and bits of sex being very story driven or character building. Not only that but from what we can see from historical research, and even now, Japanese culture has a different take and sex and sexuality even back in the pre-Meiji era when westerners were allowed access. It has a lot in common with GoT in that way but with less (maybe none?) like SA or that kind of thing. Its mostly sex work and the commoditization of women which really isn't too far off from like Jane Austen, this just has cool sword fights and shit. Also dug Clarus' call out of the use of language and how it was fitting and how they didn't distract us with some corny pseudo Japanese since we already aware this is a western production. It would have come off disingenuous. I love that they cast so many Japanese and other Asian actors in the VA but didn't make them lean of super hard into corny voice work or mimicking anime VO which would probably have taken me out of it. Masa Oki, George Takei, Randall park, Ming-Na Wen, Maya Erskine, Cary Tagawa, fucking Kenneth Branagh; all dope it never feels put on. Everybody is good and their voice sounds like it fits the character even if their speech is somewhat anachronistic.

I do like how this show has the casual nudity that is so rare in western culture. We lose something when nudity is constantly tied to sexuality. Seeing a bare breast because a woman is feeding her baby is not sexual in any way. Seeing a man’s penis as he is changing out of a wet suit at the beach shouldn’t be anything more than when he takes off his shirt. The problem with sexualizing nudity is it ostracizes casual nudity into something wicked when it’s not.

Yeah, no, it's not possible to cut any size tree with a sword, especially not a katana, which has a wide blade and is liable to dull, permanently bend, or break from hard use. Think of how many axe swings it takes to fell a tree. A stronger, thinner sword could MAYBE cut a sapling, but most likely in multiple swings. I used to cut rolled tatami and bamboo with a sword, and even that can easily dull your sword if you don't do it correctly. Love this show, but it definitely continues the anime trope that katanas are basically lightsabers, but also make impossibly thin cuts that have a delay before the thing splits in 2, despite the katana being a very thick blade compared to most swords
