One of the attractive things about small passively cooled PCs is the ability to mount them on a dovetail bar attached to the scope. That generally keeps cables short and eliminates most of the worry of cable drag as the scope slews and tracks. Have you had any problems with the fan from this new mini PC causing high frequency vibration that’s picked up by the camera? I imagine that could cause some issues with a high focal length scope like an SCT, RC, or even big refractor.
@PatriotAstro Жыл бұрын
Depending on the fan and unit, it could be the case although i have not seen this yet. Since I need a usb hub, I chose to mount that high and run a single USB back to the miniPC at the base. Helps to avoid this potential issue as well, plus i can easily swap PCs without rewiring everything... which i do all too often.

They are getting so much more powerful and are definitely great for our particular hobby. There was some news this week however that Intel is exiting the NUC market. There will be tons of other manufacturers still participating in this miniPC space, Intel just won’t build their own miniPC models anymore… Just the components for those PCs. I guess this shows us that the profit margins and market for these miniPCs is too small for the big players, so desktop PCs will be around for a while :-)

Hi Chad! Glad to see you back! Hope you daughter is fine! I have seen the Morphine in the past, but just couldn't find any reference about anyone actually using it, I ended up choosing a MELE Q2 after your review (THANKS!!) and it does the job just fine... The only thing that bothers is to copy all the pictures to my laptop for processing, I am never in range of my home WIFI when imaging. I'm either in the field where I use a travel router, and even though I have my laptop, I usually don't keep it powered all night; or I image from the rooftop of the building which is out of range. Maybe you have some idea? Thanks

One option is to use the Remote Copy plugin but target a local USB drive instead of a remote computer. Then you get the benefit of writing to your faster NVMe or eMMC drive upon acquisition, and then replicating throughout the session every minute or so to the USB in the background. My video on the plugin should get you there. Easier to just pull the usb drive after shutting down instead of waiting for some long file copy later. Make sense?

I just responded to someone else, so I’ll paste the same answer here for you. :) I just posted something on the community feed. I've been using the GMKTek NUCBox 7 which is Pentium N6005 based processor with my config, I have 16GB RAM & 512GB storage. It also runs on 12V (I'm presuming that the MoreFine M6 is also 12V based). The 2x drawbacks of the GMK NUCBox 7 is that he storage is SATA SSD, not NVMe, and despite being a 10W TDP, seems to be borderline with 12V. I feel that if I don't have a big enough LiFePO4 or decent supply of amperage, the NUCBox 7 may crash. So whilst the Morefine N6000 may not be as fast as the NUCBox 7 N6005, the 6W TDP of the N6000 is very welcoming.

Hi Chad, I currently run my rig remotely in a sky shed pod from a cheap Lenova laptop which really struggles, especially if I open Stellarium. It is about 10' of cable from the laptop to the base of the pier and have also struggled to find a powered USB hub that works reliably. For these reasons, I have been considering upgrading to a fanless mini PC and permanently locate it on my pier. To add to my connection issues, my previous fork mount constantly lost serial connection (Celestron HC chip was a Prolific- known issue on Cloudy nights). I just de-forked my CPC and purchased a used AP 900GTO which runs on old school DB9 serial connection. It came with a USB to serial hub and two USB to serial adapters. I'm not sure why there were so many unless the previous owner had connection issues. So far I have had lost connection issues with the Serial hub and one of the adapters, the third no-name adapter is working , but I only have 1/2 of a night runtime on it. After a bunch of research, I have ordered a high quality FTDI adapter recommended by AP. I have been shopping for a mini PC with a built in serial port, thinking it would be a more reliable connection than the adapter route. This limits my options for a mini PC. My question: Have I limited my field of mini PC choices unnecessarily or do you think the quality adapter may solve my serial dilemma?

Hey Chad. Love the videos, please keep them coming. I purchased a very very similar minipc - a topton (from aliexpress). I got the version with a 5100 CPU (lower default speed, max similar to 5105). The case looks identical, the specs (except CPU) to as well. I would be willing to be they're coming from the same factory. Anyway, after a lot of testing, I did identify one thing with my Topton version. They USBC port (the one with USB, not the one that can only be used for power) would not actually negotiate at US3 speeds/protocols. I raised this with the place I bought it from, and got a generic 'yeah, but that port only does USB2 etc.'. I found that VERY strange, however like you, I needed an external USB3 hub anyway. I would be interested to know if you can get a camera working on USB3 straight into that port. Take care.

Hi chad, Mele actually released another 3 range mini pc. The 3C. It’s an odd one, as they’ve tweaked the bios so the cpu doesn’t get as hot, but has a little knocked off it’s performance, they’ve also changed the USB 3.0 power delivery. If you Google 3c vs 3q you’ll see the full discussion of differences.

Just a heads up, I was running my Mele during the daytime hooked up to my solar controller which was charging my Lithium 12v 200Ah SOK battery which powers my observatory. The load output voltage on the controller went up to 14.4V which the Mele didnt like :-( . I have ordered a new Mele (16GB this time). I will now be using a 12v converter with variable DC input voltage and constant 12v output. I presume a 13.8V out converter would be safe as well ? The Mele did have a warning that the input voltage did have a narrow range.
@PatriotAstro Жыл бұрын
Absolutely right, they do claim to have a tight voltage range. 13.8 has not been a problem for me. Of course, another option is to use one or more Buck/Boost converters, and use different ones for different gear. I had considered running a higher voltage output towards my mount, but leaving a lower voltage output towards my camera and mini PC. Thus far, I’ve had no problems with 13.8 for everything though.

It's definitely a thought, although one slip-up and passive cooling can fry a board too. So far the fan seems fine but any part failure is always a concern. At the price I paid for it, plus the 3-year replacement plan, I can look at this like a lease for 3 years and it works out to $5/month plus any defect/failure in the 3-years refunds the unit cost. I of course don't want a failure... but it is hard to argue with the numbers if it keeps chugging along as expected. Oh, and yes, they are running fully lics/act win11 pro. @PatriotAstro Жыл бұрын
It’s actually 512GB and not me so there is quite a bit of space. On the morefine model, you can add a SATA NVME to this. If you need a lot more space, you could also theoretically swap out that NVME SSD that is already installed for a larger one but it would involve reinstalling the operating system. So just going with adding an additional SATA NVMe is easier. If you instead went with the MeLE 16GB quieter 3Q model, you could just buy and install the new NVMEe Drive directly on that. Having a fan isn't a positive due to vibration. Passively cooled is fine our scopes don't need much CPU power. 16 Gb isn't important either. The real issue with these small PC's is that they need an extra 4 USB ports to be truly useful. Wifi isn't an issue either as you shouldn't be using that use a network cable. You can get passive industrial PC's with 8 USB ports, google "XCY Fanless Mini PC", they are a little larger but not too much larger.
@PatriotAstro Жыл бұрын
I agree that it could introduce vibrations. Whether it does depends on the system and mounting point I guess. I do still like the fanless design if the specs are right, but I don't mount to my scope so I can go either way on this one right now. There were a number of warm weather imagers struggling with the fanless temps so this could give them some options. I have also used the industrial machines in the past. I think the issue for many people is the requirement for low footprint and low power since the image remotely. But points well taken.
