I got into Dynasty Warriors due to the PS2 games too, and it was so fun being able to play as these characters that I've read about since I was a kid, even if the game takes a lot of leeway with the story. I'm also a Shu person, mostly because Zhao Yun will forever be my unproblematic fav (both in the novel and the game). Loyal, tall, intelligent, courageous, virtuous, and charismatic, he's one of the few that lived to a ripe old age (for the time). Even his courtesy name of Zilong is cool and suits him so well.

What got me into the DW series was growing up as a kid, me and my older brother would play campaigns of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2 on SNES. He'd always be Liu Bei and I'd always be Cao Cao...and if my brother failed to recruit Lu Bu on his first turn he'd demand that we reset. Anyhoo, fast forward a decade or so and I was looking for a game to rent on my PS2 and I saw DW3. I figured "Eh, what the hell, I'll give it a shot." Popped it in, fired up the game, and my mind was blown by the fact that it was filled with all these characters I knew from my days playing RoTK2...I had no idea! I was instantly hooked and played every iteration up until 8. Even spun off to enjoy the Samurai Warriors games and Warriors Orochi games (up to WO3). The Empires spin-offs immediately became my favorite versions of the games as they combined the DW action I had come to love with a sprinkling of the strategic and kingdom management aspects of RoTK that I enjoyed when I was a kid. Yeah, I know it's all mindless button mashing and every game is the same characters going through the same battles in the same story, but damnit I love it!

i'm right there with you jesse, dynasty warriors was among the first games i played on PS2 as well. dynasty warriors 4, specifically, but i also played 2 and 3 afterwards.... absolutely LOVE this entire franchise.

Its always so interesting to see stories based on older eras, i know its not fully accurate but it does fit the time in the sense of way of speaking, beliefs of Heaven having its own will, etc. Back then everyone put their safety and lives under "the will of the Heavens" to a way higher degree, like crops going bad or heavy rain is just Heaven deciding humans have gone too far. Whereas now everything bad that happens we all go "humans are to blame, humans create all their own problems in the world" Such an interesting shift in my eyes

I've played about half of the game and I can 100% say this is a MAJOR improvement from DW9, its a great step in the right way. The combat and story is way better and considering how well this game might do, the producer did say that his planning on making a sequel to this game that goes past Chi Bi and fleshes out more of the other characters even more so I'm honestly excited for this next generation of Dynasty Warriors

Not a great step in the right direction. It's a good step, but not a great step. they need to STOP making everything look so realistic, that's never what the series was about. That's the same mistake 9 did(or one of at least) and this one makes it too

I haven't played a dynasty warriors since I was a kid on xbox original (i wanna say 3) and Xiahou Dun was my fave 'cause he had an eyepatch and that was cool to an 8 yr old. Holy hell I did not know the story behind the eyepatch was that insane! When Jesse first mentioned a guy eating his own eye after losing it my brain immediately asked "no way, was that who i played--" and lo and behold. 8 yr old inner me loves the eye patch, the inner angsty teen loves the story behind it, I am so excited to learn more about this guy.

I don't like how all the characters have been super aged down. And the new voice acting is something straight out of DW3, which is its own version of good and bad lol. I'm just glad the series is still getting love, and banging new OSTs.

DW9 was such a disappointment, I'm glad they're going for a whole different direction/feel with this one the overworld reminds me a bit of the Chronicle mode in Samurai Warriors 4

Mechanically and in terms of gameplay, it's great. It's everything else that sucks about this one. They went too heavy on the realism and now everyone that used to stand out seems...generic. Plus this new unnamed character being a main character was a huge mistake in my opinion. You CAN still have fun with this game if all you care about is the gameplay but otherwise? Yeah, it's a big miss for me

@@ruick78 While that is pretty much the point of this story, hence it being called origins, that I meant is they don't stand out as much as they used to. Some still do like Guan Yu but then you have characters like Zhang He who not only isn't as campy as he used to be, he doesn't dress as flashy and doesn't even have his signature claw weapon. Another good example is Zhang Jiao or as Jesse called him, John Yellow Turban. He looks so bland and generic. That's what I mean when I said this game went heavy on the realism and forgot all the campy and crazy stuff that made the series what it was.
