Personal head cannon: York could in fact always read. Orcish runes are just English letters, but he assumed they would be different and thus decided he couldn't read. (Also an explanation for how he kept accidentally reading last season)

I'm not sure if I really understand: what I'm getting that is that Orcish runes are identical to the English alphabet, but wouldn't that mean York can figure out English text? or is it kind of like "A in English is actually Z in Orcish" so it looks like a jumbled mess to York (without assuming he's dyslexic, that's Jacob's call for his character) I like to imagine because he was a prince, all of the royal staff would just read something out loud for him. So maybe that's why his canon reading level is a little behind. He knows the alphabet, he can identify the most basic grammar and words, but maybe if a word is longer than 2 syllables, his brain immediately gives up and he lets some else read for him.

​ @Scrofar I like the second half of your interpretation but based on York's ability to recognize entire words, I think the alphabet being the same would be fine. There could be a few small differences like maybe some letters are missing so there's not a one for one with every Orcish rune and the Orcs may have some sounds that are harder to render because of this, or certain things are written differently in Orcish than they would be in English, especially if the grammar is actually different. There could also be some letter combinations that throw him off, particularly if the sound doesn't match from his perspective. English spelling is weird and inconsistent (even ignoring the differences across British/Australian and American English) so just because he can figure out what a word is by looking at it and is able to speak fluently in the language, that doesn't mean he'd be able to figure out all of the words at a glance, especially anything that we'd write differently than we'd say casually. I think York reading aloud is probably what deters him because he doesn't want to SAY it wrong and his spelling is probably abysmal, coupled with English having some of the quirkiest decisions and the largest amount of exceptions due to so many loan words being baked into it. So I agree that York is more inclined to default into giving up quickly, as you suggested. Big words would give him extra trouble and he's used to just letting other people handle that task for him, so that makes perfect sense coupled with how he's responded in open frustration after getting it correct for a little while. I just assume the process would be a little different based on how people get flustered with translating and interpreting IRL languages. York is much more confident in his ability to speak fluently than to read fluently so I think he just needs some reassurances and tips to make him more confident when it comes to reading and ofc with his personality it would be an uphill battle too lol. York is his own worst enemy because he's so stubborn and self-assured otherwise.

You see, York isn't a dumb guy. When he applies himself, he is actually a very quick study. It's just that York has other interests. He is also a product of his environment and he wasn't raised to care much about things like reading. That said, he exhibits an extraordinary capacity to grow and adapt. Very few have ever achieved York's reading level in such a short period of time.

In S1 York said he was only a baby and thus vulnerable for a couple hours after being born. Based on what we know about orcs, I think orcs in general are very quick at learning and growing and York is supposed to be a prime specimen, so to speak, so he’s even more adaptable. York has the potential to become superior at literally everything if he wants to, but he’s also very stubborn and pragmatic, so if he doesn’t feel the need for something, he won’t do it.

So they realized rather quickly that they shot themselves in the foot by putting character lore that stopped him from doing that. I know he lamented forgetting to change that in between season 1 and 2. So I was so happy for him that it finally happened!
