Best of luck, that’s a huge shift. One thing tho: do not confuse “enthusiasts” with “people with money”. You refer to Leica, it’s the perfect example, it’s now a brand made for “people with money”, not for “enthusiasts” (and do not confuse “people with money” with “people trying to be enthusiasts”). Back in the days Leica was used by a lot of photographers, Henri Cartier Bresson and alike, you know the story, because it was a technical marvel, a rangefinder, well built, etc. And (this is where you may be surprised) it was affordable. It was expensive but affordable. Not “expensive” and “affordable” the way those words are meant today, it was truly affordable. It was a good tool to make your art. True artists could buy a Leica, and it was a wise choice, it worked great, it was durable. An artist living today would never be able to buy a Leica and the success of Leica is absolutely not made thanks to “enthusiasts” but thanks to “people with money”. And just trying to be clear here: even the artist trying to save money to achieve some kind of a dream wouldn’t be able to buy a Leica. He probably wouldn’t want to anyway, not only because a Leica today is a far cry from the technical marvel and state of the art it was back in the days, but also because it would be financially stupid. You have to pay for your lenses, you have to pay for your prints, and ultimately your art is not built by having Leica written around your neck. I think the comparison is important because we live in a very strange world where “people with money” tend to dictate some new truth about things, the truth where “enthusiasm” is confused with “consumerism” and show-off. If you’re working with wood, if you’re an “enthusiast” of wood, you should have a good chisel, and that chisel will probably be made by another craftsman, another “enthusiast”, and this chisel will cost money because it costs money to be made. There is some beauty there, it’s a circle and it’s real. It costs money to have a good tool is a very different statement than it costs money because some “people with money” can buy it. It’s almost vicious because it grabs us somehow. Leica is beautiful to me too, it’s a beautiful object, but then I have to remember: it doesn’t make any sense and Fukase didn’t need a Leica to make Ravens.

Very thoughtful criticism. Let's hope we get nerdy, enthusiast content
@TaehaTypes2 күн бұрын
This is a fair perspective and I definitely agree with a lot of points! Most people in Leica forums these days are just posting pictures of their gear as opposed to the pictures they're taking with it (or maybe I havent discovered such forums yet haha). Hopefully Ryan and I can strike a balance between making products that are still designed with the enthusiasts at heart while trying to sustain our livelihoods
@Thejustincredible500Күн бұрын
great point! This world i think will be a strange place to navigate that line between appealing to an enthusaist and people with money as youve mentioned. Really like that point. It speaks to much more than just the keyboard industry, but its actually a trend which is sweeping the whole world.
@TheSP3CTR39 сағат бұрын
The old film Leicas are still very much enthusiast gear - my M4-P (Canadian Leica supremacy, it's the best street photography camera ever made) setup is worth less than my peak Canon setup when I still did work in digital. Modern, new production Leica on the other hand? You nailed it.

Thanks for everything - without you, I wouldn't have done it either. You are a huge inspiration and opened this door for so many like me. I ended up stepping away from being a keyboard youtuber about a year and a half ago and focused hard on my personal life. The community was so amazing and is definitely the thing i miss most. I've dabbled with the idea of coming back and doing videos NOT about keyboards - but the fear of being subject to what KZbin deems "a good video worth promoting" has made me hold off- you are FAR from being alone in feeling this way about being a content creator. Your goal to make more longform, high quality content about keyboards is incredible, and I wish you the best!

Taeha, I started watching your stream mid-late 2018 when you still had less than 50 views. I moved to a new country alone, and I spent a lot of nights studying and watching your streams, which encouraged me to work hard to get through school so I could buy my own keyboard, and find a home to settle in so I could have my own set up. I am not too different in age than you, and as someone who is in full swing of my own career, it has been such a heartwarming thing to watch your hobby bloom into such a big community. Fast forward 6 years, I’ve built two boards of my own, been to meets and met really good friends through this hobby. You helped me foster such a unique community in my life when I felt alone in a new country with none of the friends and family I knew. You may not remember, but it was a lot of fun getting to play league with you and kuroi, I hope your naut hooks are still clutch 👍 Cheers!

This is exciting! I found the keyboard hobby in 2020 with the Tofu65. Looking for desk setups in the onset of COVID. You were of course one of the bourgeoning channels. I ended my journey earlier than many, but learned enough to be able to sell keyboard building as a service if I wanted to. My last board was a Mammoth 75. I'm instead investing in my own company, making CNC Machined and 3D Printed folding knives. But my experiences from the Keyboard hobby have been instrumental, and each hobby I undertake along the way is a process of discovery for me to pursue a job worth doing. Like you, programming, engineering, designing, tinkering, aesthetics, and function are all pillars within my world. I find myself akin to you, save for the (enormous) influencer piece of the pie. Then, today, I re-discovered your channel. I assumed immediately you were posting a burnout/quitting video, as we've seen with so many others. I'm glad you've found a way to build from your experiences, and had the courage to move on from what many would consider a comfortable system. Even though its uncertain, you certainly can do it. But you choose more fruitful paths. As we age, our need for money is replaced with a need for time. More accurately, a need to govern the time we spend carefully. I wish you best of luck Taeha. I hope to tune into you again someday randomly to find out what you've been up to. /remindme 5 years Peace!
