A New Cold War? Ukraine Violence Escalates, Leaked Tape Suggests U.S. Was Plotting Coup

Last night the country's embattled president and the opposition leaders demanding his resignation called for a truce and negotiations to try to resolve Ukraine's political crisis. But hours later, armed protesters attempted to retake Independence Square sparking another day of deadly violence. At least 50 people have died since Tuesday in the bloodiest period of Ukraine's 22-year post-Soviet history. While President Obama has vowed to "continue to engage all sides" a recently leaked audio recording between two top U.S. officials reveal the Obama administration has been secretly plotting with the opposition. We speak to Stephen Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian studies and politics at New York University and Princeton University. His most recent book, "Soviet Fates and Lost Alternatives: From Stalinism to the New Cold War," is out in paperback. His latest Nation article is "Distorting Russia: How the American Media Misrepresent Putin, Sochi and Ukraine."

@@grocerylist Sadly, the mindset of average people (due to the media) is that Russia is the one in the wrong, from the start till the end. Yet back in 2014, when there are peaceful resolutions being put out by Putin, to make Ukraine a neutral state without anyone interfering, and both the EU and Russia sides will help it economically, the white house, USA itself, decline that offer. And it is after that rejection, riots take place (leaked footage shows that US instigated it) and Russia had to annex crimea by invading. This led to NATO to start militarizing some of the new states that have joined NATO recently, and eventually led to a new Ukraine President that is pro western and want to join NATO. Once the world knows that Ukraine has the backing of NATO and US, it made Putin reconsider on why US wants to do it? Why make promises on "no NATO expansion" and "Neturalizing Ukraine, but helping them economically" when the US just want it all? This actually shows USA does not want a peaceful resolution, and just want to antagonize Russia, without caring about which states in Europe get caught in the crossfire and just blame it on Russia when war happens. Since the world knows that Russia is the bad guy, whatever the media portrays on Russia will be deemed as correct in the public's eye of view. And this, makes me sad to know that the truth is being twisted so much. (I'm not a pro-russian, in fact russia should be the one at blame for the war crisis. But US themselves that controlled NATO are the root issues that caused the war today)

Looking at this video seven years after it was made, it is perfectly clear that Putin was not to blame for the situation that developed just prior to the request from the leaders of Luhansk and Donetsk, two weeks ago, that he provide them with security and peacekeeping forces. Prof. Stephen Cohen had a inkling that both the USA and NATO would wash their hands and watch from afar if Ukraine disintegration into civil war - despite the Minsk Accord - and that is exactly what they did, even after the USA staged a regime change coup, even after Russia stopped the civil conflict in the Dombass, and even after Russia invaded the rest of Ukraine to demilitarize it. Except of course that the USA State Dept. participated heavily in the tsunami of anti-Russian and anti-Putin propaganda that erupted when Russian forces entered the Dombass. Cohen's analogy with American protesters throwing molotovs or smashing government buildings while American police try to halt the protests makes a lot of sense. No country in the world, no matter how sympathetic they are with protesters, would allow a protest that destroys buildings or physically threatens leaders allow the protesters to go so far without the police intervening or halting the situation just saying.
