www.democracynow.org - Ukraine is in a state of crisis two days after the country's democratically elected president was ousted following months of street protests that left at least 82 people dead. On Saturday, Ukraine's parliament voted to remove President Viktor Yanukovych, a move Yanukovych described as a coup. Earlier today, Ukraine's new leaders announced the ousted president was wanted for mass murder of peaceful protesters. Russia condemned the move to oust Yanukovych and recalled its ambassador to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Europe has embraced the new government. European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is traveling to Ukraine today to discuss measures to shore up Ukraine's ailing economy. One of Yanukovych's main rivals, former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, was released from custody. We speak to Timothy Snyder, professor of history at Yale University. His latest article for the New York Review of Books is "Fascism, Russia, and Ukraine." We also speak to University of Rhode Island professor Nicolai Petro, who is in Odessa, Ukraine.

LOL & QFT @ 15:32 "The place is remarkably peaceful. The presidential residences are being visited peacefully, rather than looter-sacked as in other revolutions or even in the United States when we have a weather problem."

is that the palace where "concerned citizens" claimed to have found incriminating documents when they were "searching " for the president, who coincidently was fleeing for his life ?

Well, looking at what transpired in the months -- and years -- after this broadcast, Mr. Snyder was proved mostly wrong in his analysis. The Maidan protests, initially popular, were indeed overtaken by the far right/neo-Nazis directly or indirectly supported by the US, the next elected president, Poroshenko was no less an oligarch than his predecessor, the eastern and culturally Russian parts of the country rebelled with civil war ensuing, a possibly successful peace deal (Minsk 11) was not implemented by the Kiev government, and the West kept insisting on incorporating Ukraine, if not officially and directly, then unoffically and indirectly as a bastion of NATO, something which the Russians have for years considered would constitute a major threat to their vital interests.

This “neo nazi “ talk is Putin talking points verbatim and is offensive to anyone with knowledge of the area. And yes, I’m familiar with the “Azov” forces, which are a tiny percentage.

Susan Rice is a liar and a hypocrite. She knew going in that Ukraine is bitterly split " on a good day ". But she and Barack and Nudelman decided to act anyway.

Thank you for this illuminating discussion. In attempting to "research" this subject I found it difficult using key search words to find any video or writings that were unbiased; that is to say that the ones I found pushed one narrative by omitting any information that did not support their version of events. The professor from Yale helped me understand why in this 2022 invasion that nearly all of Ukraine is united in defending the country. From much of the propaganda one would expect there to be a lot in the way of 5th column sabotage but there is not.
