A NEW Color Film Manufacturer in 2024

A recent comment suggests that a color film manufacturer from the past may be about to jump back into the fray. Lucky film, a Chinese film manufacturer that has made color film in the past recently re-released one of their black and white 35mm film stocks, SHD 400. When releasing this film, they commented that if sales were good they may return to the color film game. This would obviously be great news for the hobby!

The news in Chinese social media is basically Lucky invited some film enthusiasts to have a factory tour in Hebei province and demonstrated their film production line (cassettes making and film respooling machines). And people saw new color film cassettes were being tested and made. Personally I am not sure how probable they will release a new color film this year as remaking color film takes a big, risky investment and Lucky is a state-owned enterprise that does things more carefully than a private company. Also don’t expect this new film to be very cheap just because it is made in China as Lucky probably still needs to rely on some ingredients from the west. A good news is Lukcy willl launch another B&W film soon, the SHD100, in multiple formats ( 135, 120, 4x5’’).

Lucky is a China’s national company.Its full name is “Lucky aerospace”.They bought off the kodak China company at the early 21 century.And it is a huge enterprise.

One polaroid disposable I took the film out had Super 400 in it, while expired I was really happy with the results that I've been wanting to shoot more of it. Apparently their color stock was based on 80s Kodak films.

I don’t want to pour cold water on it but economy and business overall is not doing great in China right now. Lucky is not really focusing their efforts on film making for old film cameras but rather use it as a nostalgic market strategy to boost up their brand reputation and recognition. It hurts me to say as much as I love this news, I just don’t have the faith in them to make it a long term commitment to make a solid film product similar to others like Kodak and Fuji.

the only way to save film would be when anyone can buy 1 roll of film anywhere: Target, 7eleven, ShopRite, CVS, etc, etc. Right now is very annoying to be forced to buy packs of 3 rolls or mail order film.

I still live in hope that at some point Fuji notices that film sales are increasing again, and the return to manufacturing rather than repackaging Kodak. I also live in hope that Kodak or Fuji get back into making 110 film. If Lomography can make a profit from it sufficient to introduce a new 110 camera, then these other companies can do it too.

i used to love their product it was dirt cheap back in 2010 i think it was cost around just 1.5USD per rolls XD people these days might be think its totally BS but those days, even positive costs around 5 to 7 usd per roll

Hmm, seems like my wishes are coming true. As I wished for more color film other then the goat portra and gold. Now hopefully the rising interest in film photography keeps going steadily it might flatten out. It’s a use it or loose it game we play.

Lucky was easily available in Manila, Philippines. They were widely distributed in the Philippines more than 20 years ago.

I've been shooting films since I was a kid, I'm in my 50s. Honestly, I've never heard of lucky, but I'd try it, especially the black & white. I still do some dark room work.

Lucky used to make even slides back in 90s, albeit with weird color shifts and can’t really compete with Kodak and Fujifilm.

The problem is not so much will Lucky make color films or not, as we are slowly creeping towards a commercial war with China? Since the USA is ready to add 100% extra taxation on the import of electric Chinese cars, will this over-taxation be reflected on all Chinese products? I'm from Canada, and whatever the USA does in terms of duty taxation, we in my country, will follow their lead.... soooo let's see in the long run how all of this will turn out! Cheers!

Only way I will shoot film is if the real Kodachrome reappears. Best color slide film ever, but it is very complex to make and process. So, don't count on it.

I once try one roll of Lucky Black&White film around 2011, I don't like its images at all, and I just recently know later that they stop manufacturing that film and other of their film stock not long after I tried that roll after I have wonder for quite sometimes around those years where are Lucky films as it seems to me like it's just disappeared from market, not that I care much of it though. However, if they really want to reenter film industry again, I don't really trust their product after I disappointed by said roll of their film.

Some of my friends just participated Lucky's products promotion meeting.They have every formula and machines sealed until now.And the experienced employee are still work in that company.

Lucky has started their c-41 develop and scan service. Less than two USD per roll for a standard SP3000 jpg scan. Damn the government subsidies, right? From rice to high-speed railway network, from cellphone to EV, now film photography. What's next?

Lucky started collaborating with Kodak at the end of the 90s. I'd hope what they are developing now is this much much more advanced version of color negatives. Before the collaboration, Lucky color negs were pure trash.

There is a company somewhere that is reviving horse buggy and horse wagons. It brings back the nostalgia of riding in a horse drawn something smelling the horse's ass as you move at a slow pace.

Horse wagon rides are commonplace in the prairies/midwest, especially in fall and winter. And you know what? It's a great time. It's fun. Something you could do with a bit more of, bud.

@@elk3407 Actually I am in the Southwest and nobody rides in a wagon. Trucks, SUVs, cars, yes. Shooting film for me is like going back in time and riding in a wagon over dirt road. Some may like it. But why? To prove what? Film is expensive. Plus developing, enlarging, printing. Missed shots, wasted film, wasted money. Delayed visual results. Outdated look. Weird colors. I started with film in mid 80's and fully digital now. But this is my opinion, other people do what they want.

Slow pace and commitment to the process rather than only the finished image is the point for many who choose analog today. I'm younger than you but also from the pre digital era. I found digital as impressive as anybody at first but the joy of shooting vanished. The young people i teach now are a very different breed than those doing it for at living pre 2000. And that's not a bad thing. It's not really about nostalgia but about putting in the work and the feel of a tangible product.
