This course delves deep into the intriguing question of whether Jesus of Nazareth was connected to, influenced by, or familiar with the Jewish sect responsible for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls. By centering our investigation around this central issue, we will embark on an exploration of a wide range of related topics, shedding light on the historical and theological context of the time. Through in-depth analysis, discussion, and examination of primary sources, we will seek to uncover the potential connections and influences that shaped the religious landscape of the ancient Judean world.
This course comes down to a single issue: Was Jesus connected to, familiar with, or in any ways influenced by, the Jewish sect who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls? And around this central focus we will explore a whole variety of related topics, such as:
What are the Dead Sea scrolls?
How were the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered, dated, and interpreted early on?
Were the Essenes the group responsible for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls?
Who were the Essenes and what were their beliefs?
Was John the Baptist likely connected to the DSS (Dead Sea Scrolls) group?
Are there close similarities between the Jesus movement and the DSS group-how many and how significant?
What about sharp differences between the Jesus movement and the DSS group?
If the movement lasted until the Jewish Roman War in 66-73CE, was it possible that the Jesus movement and the DSS group had knowledge of each other?
How different are the Pharisees and the Sadducees from the DSS group and the Jesus movement?
And so much more...
In this course, our primary focus is on a direct engagement with the Dead Sea Scroll texts. Our emphasis is not on delving into theories about the group but rather on a meticulous examination of the content within the Scrolls themselves. By the conclusion of this course, you will have gained a profound understanding of the fundamental aspects necessary to embark on more in-depth explorations in the realm of biblical studies.
Lecture One: Overview of the Discovery-When, Where, and What?
Lecture Two: Early Controversy-A “Christianity” before Jesus?
Lecture Three: The Community Rule (1QS)
Lecture Four: Who Were the Essenes?

Formally as an Evangelical I’d have all my assumptions wrapped up with a Holy Spirit scripture bow, but earplugs and blinkers at the ready for anything too inconvenient. Now I look on in amazement at my basing my life & worldview on stuff ppl were mixing up in communities & sects & priesthoods. It’s actually really helpful to know these religious currents had been flowing before “Mathew” kicks off the NT. These groups of localised ppl, limited travel, little standardisation outside that group … opens my eyes to how much organic improvisation must have gone on in many beliefs: until an overarching Authority organisation could knit together/ stamp out. It’s all incredibly human, and Mythvision is helping us appreciate the wonder of this

Matthew did not kick anything off. For one thing the Pauline letters were decades earlier. For another the gospels were written anonymously in Greek Wales those in Judeaspoke Aramaic. Finally the first gospel was Mark. Dr Bart Ehrman is a leading New testament scholar and has said Jesus was around d the end of a 200 year religious movement that believed the end of the world was at hand. To correctly interpret such texts perspective and historical knowledge is important. It's worth noting it's too late for an imminent return.

I don't know what the "discovery" is, but if Tabor hired an anthropologist it might have something to do with bones. I do know they found the latrines (at the proper distance outside the sight of the camp, in accordance with Torah) , and that the soil in the latrines had fossilized parasites in it that are only found in the human gut and were carbon dated 1st Century BCE. I seem to remember them saying that they said there was a very early average age at death of the Qumran residents of the cemetery (not to be confused with later, Bedouin burials which can easily be distinguished because they face Mecca while the Essene burials face Jerusalem). The Essenes were dying in their 20's, largely from these parasites. They thought the residents were getting these parasites because they kept bathing in the same stagnant water pools all the time. This ritual that they thought was keeping them clean was actually killing them with parasites.

This first scroll that Dr. Tabor recalls reading sounds exactly like what Paul would be referencing when he says the Scriptures tell them the things Jesus did. And I wonder if part of the reason Paul was sure they happened already is not just because of his vision, but because it had been more than 40 years since the Teacher of Righteousness died, therefore the messiah must have come and done the things the scriptures said he would.

Considering they were all in walking distance, whoever provided the story to Mark, also had knowledge of the Essene movement. For most, a rabbi, of the sect, would have to read and explain these same scrolls to them and share their rituals. Now what we need to find is the Sacarii Training Base, perhaps across the Jordan? Revolts and religious movements are decades or more in the making, not three years.

I was fortunate to see the dead sea scrolls when they were on display at an exhibition at the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow, Scotland back in the early noughties. Even back then i could see how the texts may be linked to John the Baptsts movement. The fact that the Essenes are not mentioned by name in the gospels leads me to suspect that the Jesus movement most likely had its roots in the Essene sect. Omission is a good indicator of origin.

@suron the real name was Jacob, in Hebrew Ya'aqov. He was called James (Ya'aqov) the Just and was upto 30 years the leader of the church, apostles etc. He was the first leader after Jesus. But allegedly he didn't believe in Jesus within Jesus lifetime according to the gospels and did not follow Jesus within his life. We have no authentic writings of him, which is quite suprising for someone who was the leader of the church for such a long time. Many would say its very suspicious. We just have one letter attributed to him in the NT, but according to most scholars it was not written by him. There are references and sources about him and attributed to him outside the Nt where he also talks about Jesus, but you have to look them up for yourself. But there is also the question of authenticity. Start with James Tabor, he has many videos about James (Jacob the brother of Jesus) and also wrote about him.

Why would people be looking for a Messiah if an actual "new covenant" already existed 200 years earlier? It would be expected that a theological framework already existed in Israel prior to Jesus. That framework would eventually lead a person to say, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?” 200 later as the NT points out. A "NEW Covenant" could not actually exist "BEFORE" it was sealed with the blood of Jesus 200 years later.

Is this *truly* "200 years before Jesus"? Robert Eisenman, as I'm sure you well know, uses the dichotomy of the "Righteous Teacher" vs. "The Liar" to insist on a mid-First Century dating for at least some of the scrolls (mainly the so-called 'Sectarian Writings'). Other scrolls are probably much earlier (as you suggest), and carefully kept and treasured within this Community -- scrolls such as the 'Isaiah Scroll', and other such Torah scrolls. I'm curious to get your take on this antagonism between 'The Teacher of Righteousness' and his nemesis, 'The Spouter of Lies', Dr. Tabor. And why, if this does not refer to James "The Just" and Paul himself, it must be dated to the First Century BCE. And a corollary to this question is, if we can provisionally date at least the 'Sectarian Writings' to the First Century CE, we cannot also provisionally date the parallels between 'The Teacher of Righteousness' and Jesus himself. For me, as I'm sure they are for many others, these are compelling (and nagging!) questions. Thank you in advance. 😊

@@omw-ge3yzIf Jesus really was a Jewish rabbi, he would have known that the the Bible teaches that No man can atone for or redeem the life of another, no matter how righteous that man is. This is according to the following Bible verses: Deuteronomy 24:16 16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin. Ezekiel 18:20-22 20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. 21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. Ezekiel 14:12-28 12 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, 13 Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it: 14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord God. 15 If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts: 16 Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate. 17 Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it: 18 Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves. @@omw-ge3yz yep. In Hebrew the definition of sin means to miss the mark. It has nothing to do with transgressions. Since there is no sin to be forgiven read the story not in religion but as a novel and you should see it was murder just like what the church did to Giordano Bruno and thousands of cathars that were brutally murdered. They were used to show what happens when you go against them. So if we are made in the image and likeness of this God that means God needs to be so called saved. I can assure you from 2 near death experiences there is no hell. Think about this in the words of Jesus he said do not worship me but the Father alone is worthy. The choice is worship the creation of the creator. The reason Jesus spoke in parables was he was the parables on how we are supposed to live and treat each other. The SUN of God rises in the am to be the light of the world that saves us. If the sun doesn't rise we all would die within 3 months. Now it is up to you .seek and you will find knock and the door will open to you. The story about man kind is much more amazing than what you were MADE to believe. Best wishes

The Scriptures old and new are a call to for the Children of God to become a "Messianic Warrior" against the Depravity of Wicked people who make war for gold, land and orphans. Orphans are easier to "convert" than an adult Messianic Warrior who knows what losing means ... history proves that no one in Roman and Jewish authority gave a damn when the orphaned children in their "care" were abused or disappeared to the Christian victim blaming cries of "ungrateful bastards". After moving the Temple to Rome, reopening for business as a market place and a few centuries of "grafting Orphaned gentiles" to the sorcerers faith of Rome, the Messianic Movement's Scriptural call to arms was incrementally and forcefully changed into a passive resistance against the ever changing forces of Hell until the return of a "2000 year old Jewish man" named Jesus. You're now finding the original purpose of the Scriptures behind Christianity's wizard of Oz curtain.

The "New Covenant" was prophesied many times in the "Old Covenant" which God says Israel was unfaithful to. (Of course, history shows Christian nations and empires have been even more unfaithful to the New Covenant!) Isaiah 42 suggests God will make the New Covenant through the the Messiah who will also be a "light to the nations." Jesus and his Emissaries were very unoriginal. Everything they said was an interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures and fulfilment of prophecy. (Of course, most Christians around today are probably very unware of this!)

Dr. Tabor would be quite surprised if someone going by the name "Jesus Christ" appeared in the DSS. So would I.

His name was Yeshua. The letter "J" wasn't even used until the 14th century. Christianity is a religion based on Greek Myths. The New Testament was commissioned by Emperor Constantine and written in Greek in 350AD. Religions are used to tax and control the masses by using the fear of death, a heaven and a hell, punishment and ostracization. "God loves all of us....Jesus is God This man is God. Because we say so." Give me your money, repent, have faith. (Sucker). You can believe in what you want to, without a religion. You will still die.

It was written about (prophesied) before Jesus, but you can't have a new covenant until the actual life, death, and resurrection of Jesus -- as per the written prophesy. Until then, you only have the written prophesy of the New covenant, not the covenant itself.

😳 they are called "the prophets" for a reason. Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Isaiah, etc. Anyone shocked that the new covenant, was mentioned before Jesus hasn't read the old testament.

Yes, it’s called Buddhism. It’s at least 500 years before Jesus and he said that the Dhamma or “the Law” will last 500 years. Emperor Ashok sent Buddhist missionaries to Western Asia, including Antioch. BTW Buddha’s teachings didn’t just make there way before Jesus, it made it’s way after Jesus when Buddha was made into a Christian saint in Barlaam and Josaphat for 900 years, the beginning the age of exploration and enlightenment in Europe.

Not trying to be funny. 'New' may not be novel or old/new. Priesthood. Kings. Merovingian priest Kings. I am giving up. No one cares. The great lakes is a giant dragon. Spirit has led me through all the history and prophecy. Not the holy Spirit. I am native American medicine people descendant. Healer 🤔🫤

Seems like he's only talking about the scrolls that somewhat go along with the New Testament. What about the Revelation of Judas, which Jesus tells his disciples that Sacklas created humans not God the father. Also tells them humans will never enter the realm of the father. Either way all these stories have bits and pieces of older religions, gnosticism, and astrology. Ancient man used these stories to describe things they did not understand, so it must've been God.
