A New Device to Remove the Dead: A Bodypod Transfer Mattress

The Tetcon Bodypod Removal Device is a super interesting newer item which can be used by funeral homes to bring the deceased from the place of death. With many features and a new approach to mobility, the device was fun to try out! Check out the overview and me putting it into action with my family! Moving a decedent is very similar to moving one of a kind priceless furniture. A cot weighs approx. 100 lbs, the pod should weigh no more than 10. Tight turns & stairs have always been a challenge & I have walked out of houses after making such removals dressed in shirt, tie & suit drenched in sweat. Great product if FH's are willing to buy them. Great mom for being your model during the production.

Your mom was a trooper! 🤗 LOL “Happy Mother’s Day” I’ve witnessed a close family member being carried out in a body bag and this device would have made me feel better than seeing the actual body bag. It looks sturdy and protects the deceased from being jumbled around. It’s also nice that you can leave the face uncovered. I’m sure that makes it a bit easier for the family.

We used similar device called a SKED Rescue device on the fire department. Mainly for confined space rescue but great for tight areas where a cot or stair chair was difficult or unwieldy. Ours was a rigid hard plastic sled type that unrolled and wrapped around the body and victim was strapped in. Could remove person in any position including vertical while maintaining spinal protocol.

I too agree, Vern. I work in Armed Security where I operate as a lone officer and two of my contacts are between 7-10 stories high and in regards of transport, I love the cushioned mattress and soft head restraint to stabilize the patient and the various strap locations and added versatility during rescue/emergency evac scenarios so I'm able to lift the patients' upper body to protect their head/neck when descending stairwells.

TOTALLY LOVING the body pod. I work in the Armed Security industry and recently tested and ordered one of these myself for usage during rescue/building emergency evacuation scenarios where safe transport and stabilizing any injured personnel is key. I have two security contracts that are between 7 and 10 stories high and also love the sense of control that I have and the cushioned mattress to help mitigate against and avoid exacerbating any possible head/neck or spinal injury since I'm always the first responder and have to quickly descend multiple flights of stairs and the multiple straps allows me the needed leverage and control to navigate tight hallways or corridors that'd been otherwise difficult or risky and with it's thick material, it's great to help keep the patient dry and keep them warm if they should go into shock.

This device is a Godsend! Ive encountered some very sticky situations using cots in close quarters with narrow turns. Good idea to practice. That was very nice of you to donate the pod. That would have come in handy for my aunts removal. We had to take off the porch railing and lower her vertically like standing up. Your mom is awesome for helping with this. My great uncle worked as a funeral director/ embalmer for all of his adult life (50+) years. He was never married and lived alone. As kids we used to loved going to his house to play. He had a casket in his spare bedroom. (It was the one he used when he passed per his instructions) We loved to play in it. He played “funeral home music” on an 8 track player all the time. At one point he drove a long black limousine. He woke up every morning at 4 AM and placed call to all the local funeral home to “see who they brought in” the night before. Perhaps this is why he never married? LOL. We loved Uncle George. He taught us to really respect death and to never be afraid of it. As a preacher it has really helped in life in dealing with the terminally ill and often the families of the deceased. @@TransplantHelper it is so neat that you got to know your great uncle. My moms dad died when I was 15 months old but I remember the train ride to the funeral and the family all dressed in black standing around the open grave. My dads father died before I was born so didn't know either of them. One grandma was getting feeble minded by the time i remember her and the other was clear minded until the last but very reserved and not open to conversation with a toddler. I got to know some aunts and uncles but no close relationships there either. My dad was 107 when he passed and his mind was clear until the last so he had lots of history to tell me. I am also the youngest of my siblings too and have discovered the older ones lived the history but didn't think to tell me about it when I was too young to remember.

Thanks Kari for demonstrating this pod. We use an almost identical item in London,UK to evacuate care home residents in case of fire. Not in the area of fire but in the building. Great for easily moving bed bound disabled and easy to use on stairs and in tight corners. I agree with your mum it is a smooth ride even on stairs. During training I have been the body.

What an awesome family you have to help you review the body pad. We needed that for my mum. It was so difficult getting her out of the house on such a big clunky stretcher. When we bought her home after the autopsy, embalming etc we had to bring her in through the bedroom window and then back out the window on the day of the funeral. Having access to something like this would of been so much better.

In EMS, we have a Reeve's Sleeve. Basically the same thing. Meant for the living, has been used on the dead. So you should be able to use your body pod. I've had to do many questionable things to extract people from houses. For bodies, we would often use those black 6 handle body bags and pull them out. BTW your Mom is a gem.

Hi Kari! Pretty much a whole lifetime ago I was an active member of a volunteer fire department rescue squad. On occasion, we would be asked by a doctor or family member to do a removal. In tight spaces, and we had many a house with small stair ways and landings. We used a Reeves stretcher. At the time ('70's-80's) it was two thick pieces of canvas, usually aluminized, with long wood stringers sandwiched in between. It was great as we also used it for patient immobilization. I know the Reeves company is still around and making stretchers. Have you used a Reeves before?

I watched this because the funeral home that picked up my father in law's body dropped him going from a small bedroom in a mobile home, by a washing machine down a narrow hallway. They just wrapped him up tight in the bedsheet he was lying on. By the way, tell us about ol'King tut standing back in the room in the corner behind you.

I think this is great. Have been at home care expected death call in older homes in New England, narrow doors and staircases, with snow and ice leading to the door. This looks so much more gentle and safer for all involved. One thing about about your parents, have you thought of aging in place and accommodating mobility needs in the future while still alive? Walkers and wheelchairs need wider doorways and turn around space. (don't get me started on bathroom access). Your mom is such a good sport, what a lovely lady.❤
