It wasn't easy being a female singer fronting a band in the UK in the 1970's. Maggie Bell and Kiki Dee also come to mind. There were female pop singers, folk singers and backing singers, but commercial success for rock and roll singers was very hard to come by. Elkie Brooks probably made the most successful transition to the mainstream with quite a run of hits following on from this song. But she already had a formidable reputation as a live performer with the band Vinegar Joe, singing alongside Robert Palmer. There are some videos of that band on KZbin and they are worth a look.

Oh my God! I didn't know this existed. I recently left a comment regarding Kiki Dee, saying that Kiki and Elkie Brookes were rock chicks with amazing voices but the record companies didn't know what to do with them so they tried to smooth off the rough edges and make them more girly and soft. I'm so pleased that Elkie has gone back to her true self. She looks so much happier and sounds amazing. Kiki Dee has done the same thing. Both great talents who should be more appreciated than they are. Thank you for playing this. It's made my day. ❤

Always loved Elke, I bought the Pearls Album in 1981 but I haven't listened to her in a long while. Amazing that she was 72 when this was recorded. She is 79 this year and still performing on her "Long Farewell Tour" (might have to get tickets) - Her voice is holding up so well, still got that Blues vibe. She did disappear from the mainstream after the 80's, I thought she had retired to Cornwall but apparently not. If you do any more songs from her, you can't go wrong with any song from the Pearls Album.

Ever since her first days in Vinegar Joe in the early 70's, Elkie's star quality and show stopping vocal chops were obvious, (this is what allegedly led to the split with Robert Palmer, who allegedly viewed these things as his exclusive preserve in the band). She produced a range of premium offerings for years, always successful, but without the stratospheric breakthrough that her talent probably deserved. This version is a stunning testimony to the enduring nature of that talent. Thanks.

Here are three master vocalists for you, all Scottish and all with unique voices: Rod Stewart, Maggie Bell and Frankie Miller. You could try Rod Stewart, "Maggie Mae," "In a Broken Dream," "First Cut is the Deepest" are all exceptional (as are so many of his early recordings).
