Thanks for getting around to Ellie Brookes . She has been the UK's premiere Soul / Blues singer for well over 40 years . Pearl's a Singer was a big UK hit for her back in 77 . She's had many great songs since then . Well worth checking out . A personal favourite of mine is her version of the old classic , Lilac Wine . Cheers . 😀

If you want more funky rock, blues and soul, Elkie Brooks and Robert Palmer with Vinegar Joe might fit the bill. I never thought of this a country song, just because Elkie Brooks was not a country singer, and since country music barely existed as a genre in the UK commercial music scene, I didn't spot the signs. This was a hit out of nowhere and gave Elkie Brooks a second shot at a career when a "Pearl" is exactly what she might have become. Pearl was also Janis Joplin's nickname, and the title of her final album.

Seeing Elkie Brooks live about 15 years ago was one of the worst experiences of my life. It seemed like ninety minutes of variations on a melody being sung to the same accompaniment and it truly made me question the point of existence. Whenever I see a poor live performance now, I take comfort in my opinion that at least it wasn't as bad as Elkie Brooks 15 years ago. The irony is that I actually do like her hits.
