We experimented with a new technique in a couple food plots this year. To get rid of weeds, we used prescribed fire instead of herbicide. It worked out pretty well in these specific conditions.

Thank you Dr. Grant. I have said this many times, but your videos are so informative. No one explains the why or how as you do. God has blessed you with an awesome gift. Thank you.

It was unreal here in north central Florida with the late September hurricane - it killed our acorn crop - it was gone! It was amazing how much more reliant the deer were on our food plots! Merry Christmas and keep up the good work!.

Plant native species to your area Instead of creating food pots. It is much more efficient.

Merry Christmas Growing Deer family! We’ve used a prescribed fire the last two falls to help get on top of the weeds and pasture grasses that overtake our micro foodplots on our new 15ac property. We’ve been able to get good soil to seed contact after the burns, and the Lord has blessed us with some timely rains. It’s working for us and we’re glad to see it working in other places, too. Thanks for a great channel and for keeping God first!!!

If I am working to improve a property on the side of a mountain in the northeast, which is completely on a north facing slope, can I still create bedding by opening up the canopy?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 6 ай бұрын
yes - but keeping it in bedding cover habitat may take some effort as trees grow rapidly on north slopes.

@GrowingDeerTV how do you suspect this will impact the soil long term? It seems like you lose a lot of biomass from the crop that would typically be terminated via the buffalo system by burning it instead of crimping it for mulch and future soil.
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 6 ай бұрын
Certainly some of the above ground biomass will be lost. However, those nutrients will be released to the soil! The roots of living and dead plants will remain in tact and 70% of the organic matter that's added to the soil comes from roots. Fire is a very natural process.

I have about 2 acres of bush honeysuckle plants that I want to get rid of. Would you suggest burning it out rather than using a herbicide? Thanks, Joe, southern Illinois

Joe - Unfortunately, fire won't kill many woody plants, including bush honeysuckle.

Most of us don’t have the resources to use your planting green. Is there a way to do it without all the equipment.

There are several videos on this channel about using hand tools. The results may not be as good, but it's an effective technique!

Not to mention if you have too many deer your native browse also takes a hit and opens space for invasive species to get a foot hold.
@GrowingDeerTV

We have a significant doe harvest annually our native browse is holding up well. We burn about a third of the native habitat annually.
