A New Garden Part 2: The Planting

A couple of weeks after turning the ground over, it's time to do it again and then chuck some seeds about!
Here I spend way too long doing things by hand, all the while dreaming up ways to use the tractor instead - maybe next year!
Wheat is sown, then clover and the existing rye grass make up the next section and suddenly half the garden is planted out. The next bit will have to wait for warmer weather.

I converted a horse-drawn roller for pulling behind my Dexta, it came out of a hedge. You can also find small drills at farm auctions there are too small for modern farming. The only problem is storing all the machinery you acquire!

calor gas bottles filled with concrete make good rollers. That little tractor should manage four in two pairs easily. And strips of plastic bottle (anti freeze type 5 litre bottles) make good bearing material for the roller axles. I roll 5 Ha with mine. Works well.

I think I've got an idea for your next project: If you make an attachment for your drum in the form of a Y shape, you can attach the V bit to your drum and use the I section to attach to your tractor a bit like a paint roller or pulling a tricycle behind you. You would need to find a way to make the drum rotate freely of course by welding a hub and bearings to it or maybe pass a shaft through it but essentially you would have a steam roller. Maybe fill it with sand/rocks instead of water. If you then get another drum, do a similar thing to it, but in addition, add spikes to the outer surface in rows/columns you would also have a device for making channels for your seed.

If the clover grows well I would advice flailing mid summer so that doesn’t become an uncontrollable mess, it will grow back thicker and choke the weeds.

2:14 funny enough I'm exactly at the same point: Some weird old half-rotten boards and a fresh garden. The boards were used as "ways" between the rows before, until they found out that after rain they get slippy. I drove with the tractor (a wider one than yours) over the garden and compacted paths to walk in and threw the boards, cutoffs of hedges and everything else I could find into a chopper and dressed the ways with wood chips.

your'e doing an awesome job! getting gardening simple is a great thing. If you look at people who have had allotments forever they just grow a few things that they know they like/ is worth growing. it takes time to know what suits you.I've tried loads of stuff, i did try growing foder and beans for animals but that never produced enough to make a dint in the feed bill. lol

Kind of late now, but wheat produces best when planted eight inches apart. Not sure what that comes to in euro measurements. Rice does best at one-foot spacings, so if you decide to try one of the dry-land varieties, you’ll know. I DO recommend you look into getting a seeder for a garden that size. There are some that can be bolted together to do up to four rows at once. They’re just small hand pushed units.

Looks like a lot of hard work but if it was easy everyone would do it gardening is my favorite thing to do, however I cheat a lot and use more modern techniques plus I have a greenhouse now so growing food has become so much easier for much longer throughout the year

Maybe an electric tractor based on a mobility scooter. Free off the solar for lighter work like towing the roller.

Any particular reason for planting clover? I know you mentioned green manure and it is used as feed for livestock but since you don't have any cattle etc I would recommend you use another more edible legume instead which will give more food for your table and accomplish the same thing with regards to fertiliser and soil protection. Also, whilst you're at it Max, please see if you can get your chickens to lay more eggs :). It's getting bloody ridiculous in the shops.

I'm following someone else's routine for the first year (as in the video I reference in part 1). The main reason for the red clover is simply that I saw the chap doing that as part of his rotation.

You could sow the clover on the same ground as the corn (under sowing) the clover won’t come to prominence until the second year by time you can plough it under in the summer/autum

Just for future, it is probably better to alternate the direction you travel or when rotovating you eventually end up with all the soil one end of the patch especially working as you were uphill all the time. If rotovating one way keeping your head downhill will keep the soil uphill better. Make sure you disengage or lift the rotovator before dipping the clutch too! Yes you will have a headland at the bottom to work crossways and I expect that was why you did it the way you did. It is looking good for sowing some wheat all the same. Good luck.

Good planning missed one thing. How to keep all the bloomin birds off the field. They will cause so much havoc . Its unbelievable. Seeds , seedlings , any thing green will get stripped without protection. Guarenteed.

For the first year I'm following fairly closely to the routine I saw in the video I mentioned in the first part of this series. I think the main advantage of rows is that it's possible to easily weed with a hoe.
