Rolling sleeves means sunburns and abrasions below the biceps. Rolling sleeves isn't worth it from a tactical standpoint honestly in my opinion because it increases your risk for injury when you can change the cut of the uniform to make it more suitable for the climate you expect to be operating in.

It's ill advisable to roll up your sleeves when in a jungle environment, due to the number of hazards present. Mosquitos, barbed plants, sunlight by itself, etc. It's standard practice in both the Army and Marine Corps to roll down their sleeves when operating in a jungle environment.

@Danijel Mornarić To be fair, the Marines developed their MARPATS long before the Army came out with the ACU, and they did it for way cheaper too. The Army came out with the ACU years after the Marines had been wearing the MARPATS, it would have been grossly unfair and expensive to make the USMC change over to the ACU which isn't even worn anymore. But at the same time, the USMC also fucked it up for everyone by incorporating the EGA into the camouflage which meant it wasn't usable for other services, and so started the trend of everyone making their own camouflage. That said, the USAF switched to wearing the Army OCPs and the Navy got rid of the blue berries.

So, I was in the Army when the BDU was introduced, way back when rocks were soft and Cold Warriors and other dinosaurs proudly walked the Earth... My Basic unit was the first to be issued a complete set of BDU's including field jacket, so I never had to wear the pickle suit. I can see a lot of improvements in this uniform over the BDU [and yes, I realize there's been several redesigns in between]. One thing that I wish we had back then is the shoulder seam. The BDU seam ran right along the top of the shoulder and when you wore a ruck it was constantly grinding into your shoulder muscles. The trouser cuff mesh is also a good idea, provided that it's comfortable to wear.
@shadowwolf76225 жыл бұрын
I did my basic and AIT at Ft Sill, OK. Summer of 1982. We were in the 1st batch to get the BDU there. The Batteries just ahead of us had the pickles with Mitchell helmet covers. We got woodland camo covers but did get OD field jackets. I was sure glad I got the BDU's instead of the greens. Once I got in my unit, a lot of the guys already there had the pickle suits. We were issued steel pots in basic. I was the 1st in my unit to get the then New Kevlar. One of our cooks found it in the field. I gave him $10 for it. He needed beer money.

Vietnam ERDLs? That was a pretty decent jungle uniform. Helicopter crews often commented they had trouble locating troops wearing this uniform, it was so effective. Even the OD version in jungle environment was relatively effective; movement, not color or camo pattern of uniform, is normally what gives away your position. This whole thing of each service developing it's own uniform is completely out of control. But let's not learn anything from the past, let's go make the same mistakes over, like putting nylon in a jungle uniform or make it out of thick material (Air Force ABU) so it's useless in hot environments...like they found the original woodland BDUs were and had to develop a rip-stop cotton version. Guess they forgot about that. You really going to make everyone wear body armour in jungle environment? Go back and see how that worked in Vietnam. Does anyone research this before they start designing the latest fashion camo? And Velcro on jungle uniforms ? See how much noise it makes when someone opens a pocket, or how it gets caked with crud when in the field.

When I made my first landing with the 1/26 Marines in the Vung Tau area of Vietnam (Deckhouse -3 Phase-2) in 1966, I was wearing cotton fatigues of the Korean and WW-II vintage. My boots were the old Marine Corps horsehide boondockers. It was a totally inappropriate uniform for jungle combat (the area had 90% tree cover and was wet, hot and muggy) and I suffered because of it. The boots had no traction and the cotton was heavy and would not dry. I got standard jungle fatigue uniforms about 1967 and that was a night and day difference. I am glad to see that the uniforms are evolving even further with the comfort of the troops in mind. If a grunt is comfortable, he/she will be a more efficient combat operator...

Patrick Joseph: Yes the Vietnam Jungle fatigues, (which were modeled on the WW2 M-42 Paratrooper jump uniforms) worked well. The lime green dominant ERDL jungle fatigues, which were worn by LRRPS/Rangers, etc... was a great camo pattern that had actually been in development by the Army in Panama during WW2 and brought out in Vietnam. But the point here is that all that is history, after Vietnam, in the early 1970s the Army purged everything that had to do with the war, lessons learned, everything, and not much had been written down so it all vanished.. They seemingly viewed the war as a splotch on their proud record and they quickly sought to distance themselves from it, as they shifted back to their WW3, European, Russkies pouring through the Fulda Gap scenario. So now they have to re-learn everything related to "jungle". (Footnote: The only unit within the U.S. Army that even sought to memorialize the Vietnam War was U.S. Army Special Forces, aka the "Green Berets". They didn't forget. But they are only a small community within the Army)

The last thing you need if you fall overboard is ocean camo. Plus the baggy pockets are always catching on latches. The Coast Guard went back to their Blue utilities uniforms. solid blue, No baggy pockets plus pants match Dickies, so they are easy to replace. They don't snag on latches. LEO Coastguardsmen used to wear the blue utilities. Lately I've seen some Coastguardsmen LEOs wearing multi camo. Doesn't make any sense. I was happy with our Blue Utilities.

The old woodland pattern or the British DPM patter are MUCH better.
@rediius5 жыл бұрын
Having worn both... no, they're not.
@G1NZOU5 жыл бұрын
They're actually not, in dark dense foliage yes, they work really well, however think of it this way, when you do most need to rely on your camo to conceal you, or at least delay the moment when an enemy spots you? The answer is when you're moving across open ground, that means a slight bias in camo pattern effectiveness towards brush, grasses and earth colour is preferred, in foliage you can hide behind concealment and even use bits of foliage to augment your camouflage, in the open you have nothing. Tests have shown that transitional patterns like MultiCam perform better overall when multiple terrain types are considered, DPM will be the top in woodland but completely at the bottom in desert, whereas MultiCam for example tends to sit either in the middle or the upper third of test patterns in nearly every terrain. For a military that does deploy to multiple countries, and isn't just a small defence force in a country with a fairly uniform climate, a transitional pattern is a good idea.
@suspense82825 жыл бұрын
In hot climates, no. They’re thicker material, original od’s will forever be the best uniform.
@G1NZOU5 жыл бұрын
@@suspense8282 True old BDUs are too hot, especially with modern body armour. As the for pure pattern though on a modern cut uniform, Woodland still has some merit.

I am thinking just Olive green would do, plus maybe black jungle boots......awwh shucks those Vietnam Vets got it right lol. TBH there's not enough jungle in the planet now
@josemoreno33345 жыл бұрын
They look just like our old BDUs we use to were back in the 1980s and 90s. The Army , Marines and the Air Force wore the the same uniform. Save the tax payers money.

Nothing wrong with old uniforms? So who is getting a kick back for the new ones? Tell you what find a couple of Battalions let them try them out and get back to us?

Don't need pockets up top?!?!?! Bullshit, kid! I kept all kinds of shit in those pockets especially my dip in a zip lock baggie. Then again, I wore BDUs, green jungle boots, and a black beret before it was given out to the whole army without earning it. Sua Sponte.

@jacksonduren346 жыл бұрын
The breast and back pockets were entirely unnecessary i own a set of these BDU's nobody used the breast pockets as you have a plate carrier on over it, and nobody used the back butt pockets ass they weren't really large enough to carry anything got in the way when sitting down or crawling and weighed down the back belt area causing sag on top of all that both pocket placements were just huge moisture traps/
@lonnyr225 жыл бұрын
I always kept an extra mag in my back left butt pocket.

@@jacksonduren34 Unless you are ordered to, why would you put armour as your outer layer?
@HellsGuard5 жыл бұрын
If this will be their daily uniform breast pockets are useful body armor or not. The same goes for back pockets.

So they decided the ACU design was terrible, like everyone else had done long before now and thought to themselves "The only problem is the color pattern" really?!! The velcro all over the ACU's weren't changed at all, the patches that are just slapped on like the ACU's. The ACU's biggest issue was a persons lack of noise discipline when wearing them, patches can be pulled off with little to no effort, when it's washed it screws up the velcro adhesive making it hard to seal velcro pockets after a while and the pockets can get caught on things making a loud ripping sound when the velcro is tugged on... You didn't even change the rank insignia placement?! Put them back on the collars where they belong!!
@tyates43985 жыл бұрын
As always, the Army tries to make their utilities look as unkempt and wrinkly as possible. Next step will be a camo pattern poncho with velcro everywhere.

The back pockets on pants are not an issue, and the chest pockets in the blouse are not an issue either. For paperwork and my CAC I use the the chest pockets. And the back pocket for my wallet.... why take them away? It makes no sense. They don’t add that much for heat retention.
