A New Kind of Bishop in the GMC - A Conversation w/ Bishop Carolyn Moore

Rev. Carolyn Moore was one of six new bishops elected to the office on an interim basis at this year's Convening Conference of the Global Methodist Church. Moore represents a different approach to the episcopacy than the GMC's predecessor. It will probably take some time for the GMC to collectively understand the implications of the decisions that were made around bishops last month.
This conversation is an attempt, not only to get to know Bishop Moore better, but also to enlist her help in understanding the current dynamics at play in our covenant body. While it is impossible to predict the future, I think she can go a long way towards helping me and an audience to anticipate what the next couple of years should look like.

Yes, we all have ACCESS to God, because God himself has made salvation available to all (without which nobody would have access to salvation). It is better to say *access* and/or *availability* then to frame it as *right* to salvation. God could have choose not to save us to begin with, or to simply not make us to begin with. That being said, I came across something by Hugo Grotius (an Early Dutch Arminian) that perhaps pertains to this discussion. I strongly implore everyone to reflect upon it: "God was entirely free not to create man. Yet by the moment of his creation as a rational being capable of the highest form of society he necessarily had to approve every action conform to the exigencies of such nature and to dismiss every action contrary to it. But there are many things which he commands or forbids according to his free judgement." - Hugo Grotius

We Arminians do NOT differ from the Calvinists and the Lutherans on Total Depravity! We are in full agreement. However, all three differ on the *solution* ,how God resolves and deals with fallen humanity. All three believe God saves fallen depraved sinners by Grace through Faith. They differ on the details of how Grace and Faith play out. Arminians resolve the issue by Prevenient Grace, the Calvinists by Predestination and the Lutherans by Word and Sacrament. The Calvinists believe that God unconditionally, out of a fallen humanity, Predestines some to salvation and passes over the rest of humanity leaving them in damnation. The Arminians believe that God gives all of humanity Prevenient Grace, without which no person would ever desire to choose, much less have the ability to choose, God. Thus Prevenient Grace is the first step in reconciling sinners to God; it is a step that God initiates because we are so fallen and wicked we would never seek after God on our own. Lutheranism is a little bit more complicated, but it has to do with the Preaching of the Word and the Grace and Power that is in it, that brings people to Christ, just as the sacraments have the same Grace and Power to bring people to Christ.

You're welcome to watch our live stream anytime, though I would urge you to find a local covenant body to do your daily walk of faith with. Even if they don't bear the GMC logo on the front, any in-person body is better than a virtual one when walking rightly with the scriptures.

"Conservative" is a relative term. In contrast to the UMC, yes, we are conservative. However, there are many conservative denominations that scoff at us for this reason and others.

@@plainspokenpodJust understand that every single denomination that has gone the route of women pastors and leaders has always gone gay, apostate, and on downward to increasing evil. GMC will go this route too, if you are allowing for women to lead your churches in clear violation of Scripture.

I agree that this woman is a good administrator and is sincere in her service, BUT so are many deluded and disobedient religious people. And here we are yet again in the awkward position of ignoring the plain teaching and wisdom of Scripture, both OT and NT. A woman is NOT to be usurping the God-given authority of men in the church. If the GMC wants to truly begin on the right foot, then you are going to need to listen to God’s revealed Word about these things. Do you not understand that this is exactly where the UMC went wrong from the beginning? Don’t think those early women leaders were gifted admins and well-meaning? It’s not about well meaning people or our own human wisdom.. listen and obey God or be set aside. It is that simple. All you’re doing now is replicating the same mistakes the UMC made twenty plus years ago.

Jeff, you completely lost me here. Don’t quote scripture to me and preach sermons about discipline within the congregation … and then gleefully ignore Paul’s words on the role of women in the church. You are cherry-picking what scripture you believe. The GMC is just the UMC 2.0. You’ve lost all credibility here. I’m unsubscribing and walking away. I’m so disillusioned.

@@johnseth8728 I believe women have many gifts, but Paul is clear that, in the church, women are not to hold leadership positions above men. If you are willing to toss out part of scripture, to “be nice” or “inclusive,” then, eventually you will toss out all of scripture. That’s how the UMC evolved into the heretical mess it is today. Either a church is scriptural … or it’s not. There’s no sustainable “partly or mostly” scriptural method. All of the woke and dying churches today started with the “social gospel” and then pivoted to ordaining women and making women bishops. It’s the same old path. Soon after, the Bible was open to wild interpretations and being discarded altogether. Then Jesus was just one path. Then Jesus wasn’t divine. I’m a student of history. There’s nothing new under the sun … and the GMC’s attempt to move to the right of the UMC is just like moving farther to the back of the Titanic.

Leaving aside my own feelings on the matter, would you prefer that I refuse to interview everyone who fails to obey all of scripture? Or would rather that I interview them and have them be seen for what they do (and don't) believe? For my part, I have chosen to interview all kinds of people. You and others would be wrong to infer that I agree with all of my guests. I serve in the GMC. The GMC has two female bishops. While I am a part of this covenant body, I will adhere to its governing structures until I can no longer do so. It is your prerogative to dismiss my voice if you think I have been irresponsible in tolerating certain hermeneutics with respect to scripture.

If you paid attention, you would have noticed that we had a pretty profound disagreement about the propriety of preaching a message of warning and damnation. While I was kind and gracious, you would be wrong to infer agreement. As I affirm my submission to the authority structure of the GMC, you are wrong to infer that I find the leadership flawless. I carried great resentment towards those in the UMC who participated while in a state of rebellion. It would be hugely hypocritical to take the same disposition in the GMC that my enemies took in the UMC. I have chosen to be in the GMC right now, which means my submission is required in order to be in faithful covenant. My submission is not rightly perceived as a "fan piece."
