The Mint team just replaced the entire compositor Muffin. This is the ground work for Wayland. They will embrace Wayland when Wayland will work without issue for all the users.
@leopard31312 жыл бұрын
That is an impossible standard "work without issues for all users". First as Nvidia is closed source it is up to Nvidia not Wayland to resolve issues with Nvidia. Second Xorg like all software has bugs your standard of "work without issues for all users" does not exist for any piece of software. Mint will use Wayland when the mint developers get to it. Again this is a problem when you use Mint which is a derivative of Ubuntu which is a derivative of Debian. So in general and almost certainly with large changes such as Wayland you will wait until Debian does the work, and then Ubuntu adopts the work, and finally Mint. This is one of the reasons people are starting to move away from all these minor distros and stay with, in the case of Mint, Debian. There is an equilibrium between using a mainstream distro and a fringe distro and there advantages and disadvantages. In the case of Wayland the disadvantage is that each of these fringe distros rather than working with Wayland hold out and will have to scramble at the end to do the work themselves. In the case of Wayland far better off for the Mint team to go with Debian and concentrate their efforts on the things they are good at rather than ignore progress. If they want xfce or whatever on Wayland far better off to work with upstream then recreate the wheel. Smaller features such as themes are much easier for Mint.
@tgrush12532 жыл бұрын
@@leopard3131 As a matter of fact, neither Debian nor Ubuntu need to do any work here. Muffin, the window manager and compositor that Linux Mint forked from GNOME's Mutter is now on version 3.36.x, which in theory very well allows for a Wayland session. Of course it would be preferred to have an even newer base to benefit from bug fixes and new Wayland Protocols that upstream Mutter has. Additionally, Nvidia is becoming more usable on Wayland day by day. I was using SwayWM (Wayland Re-Implementation of i3) on my Nvidia GTX 960 for a couple of months now with only minimal issues, until I decided to try the Linux Mint beta to report some bugs. To get back to the Ubuntu and Debian thing: The reason they don't need to do anything is because of how neither Debian nor Ubuntu are big contributors to projects like Mutter or GNOME. GNOME has already made a lot of progress in getting their Wayland session to be near-flawless, to the point where some distributions decided to enable GNOME's Wayland sesson by default even with Nvidia's Proprietary Drivers. Additionally, Nvidia's drivers being open-source would not mean that *suddenly* Wayland would just work, and other drivers being open-source also isn't the reason those drivers work with Wayland. Edit: I want to add that since Linux Mint 21.0 Beta 1, Linux Mint is automatically installing and updating XWayland, which hints at how Linux Mint might be working on Wayland support.

@TG Rush unfortunately my response was deleted making this nothing but a conversation with yourself on a self serving platform. Let me know when I am permitted to speak. For those who did not see my response I was not trolling merely pointing out the work but Debian and Ubuntu are doing to implement Wayland. As mint is a derivative of Ubuntu which is in turn derived from Debian mint is thus dependent on the work of those two distros. If mint were its own distro like fedora arch suse etc you work would be independent. Independent distros like arch and fedora have Wayland working for 6+ years as they do not have to rely on Debian or Ubuntu.

X11 can break on new hardware, Wayland can break on old. Pipeline controls audio & is intended to replace ALSA & pulse audio. Again, support for newer hardware & simpler interface but not all the bugs are worked out. Both old & new have their problems. If you are are running Mint on the same hardware you ran Windows 7 on & are not having problems you can definitely wait. Well, you can't really blame Cannonical for shifting Ubuntu's focus to Servers since that where they make their money. I don't think that Ubuntu desktop alone would even be break even in terms of developing cost.

I wish that Mint would implement a version of plug and play. I've got some knock-off wifi adapters with no drivers or identification and I can't use them because no drivers even though they said they worked with Linux

Give Mint back KDE (out of the box) and I'm sold for life. Mint was my first distro coming from Windows, but I eventually moved away when they stopped releasing KDE in Mint 19

I think they’re shooting themselves in the foot big time here. Being in the branding and marketing industry, the number one thing you want is consistency. Linux Mint is known for its _unique_ green colour scheme that originated from the logo and the name, changing this to blue because a dev thinks “it’s sexier” is a huge mistake. Furthermore, the new mouse pointer goes against the look and feel of Linux Mint, it’s always had a retro look and feel, and it still does in many ways, from Desktop Environment to the icons to the wallpaper even. The mouse pointer is just out of place. Ever since they changed the title bar to what is essentially Ubuntu 20.04’s title bar, I knew they were going downhill. They went from retro to a modern on one UI element, setting the new standard for inconsistency. I’m not saying the retro look is better, I’m saying be consistent, it’s branding 101. If they want to look modern, then make consistent changes to the OS that evenly reflect this change.

Honestly everything gnome based looks and feels old. The deepin team (while I would never use it) made a super modern desktop environment that looks really good. I know it’s subjective but desktop environments need a refresh. It’s stable as a rock but it’s pretty boring. That’s usually the feedback I get when I install Linux on a computer for friends or family. Hopefully changes will come soon.

You are so, so misinformed about what Fedora is that is hilarious and insulting in the same time.

Green is fine-- but not that DEAD dull green---- look at Manjaro- that green with black that they have is GORGEOUS.....(even though I don't care of Manjaro since the problem issues)...

No.. Believe or not..when people get home..they don't want to have to f uck around with constant unstable updates breaking things. They want a system that just works. Otherwise..you're wanting Arch or arch based distros if you enjoy HAVING to fix your system lol literally every other week.

Cinnamon and Mate should disappear completely. Xfce is way more stable, fast and light than those two dead-end projects

some people including myself face screen tearing with XFCE desktop , when i change XFWM4 with compiz or kwin i dont see screen tearing so i guess xfce doesn't work for everyone while cinnamon or mate here doesn't have screen tearing

Great approach, nice software, but old and therefore ugly theme and UI. It was better to use when Mint followed every Ubuntu release. LTS is getting old too fast, can’t install Mint on newer PC.

Trying not to come across as a troll but this was horrible. Basically I should use mint because you like the way it looks. Ok got it. You do understand you can theme any desktop rather trivial to do so. And then you say I should not use Fedora because it is a test bed for RHEL? But the it is ok to use mint even though it us based on Canonical ? Can't tell if you are paranoid about evil corporations or just RHEL or what the point of you anti fedora rant was about. All the other features you mentioned come with any major distro from Debian to ubuntu to fedora to arch nothing you mentioned unique to Mint. Mint has a number of disadvantages starting with it is based on Ubuntu. This makes mint years behind in emerging technology from Wayland to pipewire and make it dependent on the whims of Canonical. Fedora has custom themes including dark mode. It has a great community. You can use flatpack on fedora. You can install the Nvidia driver on fedora. Fedora is secure and stable. Fedora is using the current technology including Wayland and is free of the whims of Canonical. The fedora repos are not dependent on RHEL. Without descending into a debate regarding things such as the merits or lack thereof of things like Wayland, Wayland is the way of the future and why would you use a distro like mint which is not even testing Wayland? Fedora does not force you to use Wayland you can use xorg if you wish. Same can be said for arch. So again why use Mint? You like the way it looks, realky, because that is about the most superficial reason I can think of.
@MarkHobbes2 жыл бұрын
Why use Mint? Because it just works and it has an out-of-the-box experience that makes its worth even more while on Fedora everything is very manual and not for the average Joe (I can say the same about Arch) and guess what... On Fedora you're dependent of the terminal. Fedora makes it harder for you to install proprietary drivers, codecs, plugins, programs, fonts and so on. You need to do it all yourself and it's so time consuming. I've tried to use Fedora as my daily driver but things just don't work. Even with all proprietary fonts installed, it still looks uglier than Ubuntu on font rendering, websites just look strange. and broken. Also there is the recent issue with some essential codecs being removed like H264, H265, and VA-API. This issue would affect me so much and other tons of users. Fedora couldn't be comparable with Mint or Ubuntu since it's not meant for newbies. They care so much about open source that it just makes your system unusable.

The point about Fedora being a test bed is unlike Mint which is the final product a test bed is just a place to try stuff out before moving it on to RHEL which is seen as the actual final product so there is a totally different mindset. You don't work on creating a solid desktop experience on a test bed. This is literally why Nobara linux exists is even a Fedora dev thinks it needed a bunch of work to make it a good desktop experience. And if you don't think Fedora is dependent on the whims of Red Hat or IBM the CENT OS people are laughing right now.

Mint is not for me, I tried it months back and it felt like windows XP 🤣, always that is why Linux will continue to be fragmented and filled with people in my comment, they have nothing good to say. Hate as much you want, windows XP is rubbish and that was my very 1st OS way before I even discovered Linux. Mint is not something I want to remind me of xp, I want to move forward not backwards

I'd rather compare it to Windows 7.which is kind of their strength. Windows 7 was the last Windows, that purely focussed on Desktop usage and excelled at it. Windows 8,10,11 and Gnome try to satisfy both - Desktop and Touch Devices. For me, Cinnamon is just really efficient on my Desktop PC - although maybe a bit boring one could argue.

THANKS- GREAT video-- and it DOES look very good.... but as I said below- I'll wait til they bring this to LMDE, Right now I use SPARKY linux and love it... and have come back to it after several "hops" and have actually STOPPED hopping on my Sparky!!!! (kde)
@davidwayne99822 жыл бұрын
It works-- beautifully-- and stays out of the way-- and is fast, efficient- and has everything needed.... all the so called "improvements" should have been LEFT OUT of other distros.. SOME improvements are good- but not trying to do this "change and improve it every few days " like arch and others do-- is RIDICULOUS.. Look how Chevy RUINED the Corvette by "changing it"-- if you have a good thing and it works- LEAVE IT ALONE-- juts make a NEW version with the improvements and call it something else-- but KEEP BOTH.
@motoryzen2 жыл бұрын
Exactly..that's why I love Mint...they understand through actually being adults...that people want a STABLE and consistently good usable PC experience....not having to fix crap literally every other week or every 3 weeks like on the arch world
@davidwayne99822 жыл бұрын
SO WHAT if it looks "old"--- if it WORKS - leave it the F.. alone!!! All this bullshit about "change it every 5 minutes to a new look is CRAP--- RUINS what is already good. NEW is NOT necessarily IMPROVED or better.. and usually ISN"T.
@motoryzen2 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. So many impatient tards out there think that just because something actually hit a few years old age mark means it's automatically obsolete...which couldn't be further from the truth on that merit alone.
@davidwayne99822 жыл бұрын
I won't get this til it makes it to LMDE..... whatever version that takes... I tried FEDORA 3 times-- HATED it-- looks too much like a watered down windows that DOESN"T work right- and is messes up my system-- renumbered the drives so I had to wipe and reload it all... just TRASH as far as I'm concerned- and has gnome- which I can't stand.. I Love MINT-- and I'm NOT knocking ubuntu version at all-- but I just prefer to wait and get it in DEBIAN....
