I have owned a number of Baja bugs, they can be fun little go getters if you build it right. Suggestion, listening to it, it needs the valve lash adjusted (every 3000 with the oil change) likely has roller tappets just going by sound and my VW background.

It isn't really all that hard, there are tons of manuals and youtube videos on how to do it. When it comes down to it, it's no harder than gaping a spark plug. Just make sure you use new gaskets on the covers after, and don't forget when you change the oil to drop the screen and clean it too.

to get this shitcan look like a baja bug, you need... -a set of decent wheels, -new, longer shocks, -new torsion bars both front and back, -boxed airfilters with piping pumping in the cab - -a completely new electric wiring loom for the lighting and the wipers. -reinforced shifting linkage, one that doesnt come loose at 60mph.. -new pedal rack, because safety reasons.. -rollcage, baja spec. -new set of gauges -bigger brakes and also... -a foam filled race fuel tank. two if you plan to do the baja with it. since this is a 71, it should be a 12 volt. so you just need a stronger alternator for the rooflights. quite the trip, and that does not count aesthetics, like rustproofing, cleaning, stripping... :)

Matt, take a tennis ball and put a rope through the tennis ball. That way you can put it in the exhaust if you have to leave the car out in the rain. Engine doesnt make a lot of horsepower to push water out of the header pipes if it were to rain.

An old tin coffee can will work too. I use the tennis ball for my air cooled VW. Exact same header pipes too. I don't use a rope though. I use a thin flexible steel braided line. Stick all the way through the ball, put a washer on and tie a knot in the steel braided line and you're set. I would make a back-up one too. Never know who will steal one.
