I think Latria still stands as an atmospheric masterpiece. I totally agree that the focus of Demon Souls was more on the levels that the bosses. I am surprised you didn't comment on the Flame Lurker or Man-eater's as difficult boss fights. Based on my memories of 2009, I remember them being much harder than the fake king Allant. As far as NPC's go, Astrea is very memorable as a character and I def. had complicated feelings about my role in the story after he boss fight (her whole boss fight is basically just there to show case her character and I still think it was well done). I also think the maiden is cool and that her design is really fun but this is diminished since FromSoft put a similar female character in all their games other games after.

When I picked up Demons Souls, I had already played Dark Souls 1 and 3. I beat the entire game over the course of a single night.

if you went all the way back to demon's souls, I think it makes the most sense to play the DS games in order next. Dark souls 1 is an incredible experience IMO

The bosses in Demon's Souls are really inconsistent in design, this is basically Miyazaki's playground to figure out how to perfect that souls boss formula. BUT, I think the lore behind each of the Demon's Souls major area bosses is better than people give them credit.

Hollow Knight REALLY isn't a soulslike. The only "souls" mechanic it has is if you die you leave behind your money (which isn't even tied to lvling up since you CAN'T level up) and even then it's pretty unique compared to how actual soulsborne games does it. It's a pure-blood metroidvania.

@@TylerByler Better technically. Worse esthetically. No one asked to redesign all the monsters to look like from a generic mobile game. Also, some of the originally intended atmosphere is completely ruined, like Tower of Latria.

The original demons souls is better honestly. This game looks incredible, but the og had better art direction, atmosphere, and music, while all the gameplay is completely identical
