I beat malenia in 12 attempts my first playthrough using blasphemous blade +10 and mimic tear +10. on my ng+ I did a dual ruins great sword strength build with no summons, and it took me 65 attempts. I think not using summons in parts of the game, like malenia, make the experience so much more rewarding, as I also found malenia very anti-climactic after beating her on my first playthrough.

I actually happened to overlevel my character up to 180+ RL at this point, so... I killed her on my very first try (80 strengh build, great stars +24, mimic tear +10, bloodflame, flame cleanse me). But it was a close one (with only 1 "Estus" remaining) and I imagine she's really tough when you fight her with a low level character.

My point is: me having killed Malenia on my first try with a STR melee build have very little to do with my skill. Elden Ring was my first Souls, too... Sekiro was my second. I've platinumed both and STRONGLY encourage you to walk the same road. (Mastering Sekiro trumps the feeling of mastering Elden Ring, btw. Both legendary games).

After Elden Ring which was my first aswell I also went through the whole catalogue even bought a PS5 just to play Bloodborne and Demon souls. Sekiro is my least favourite however, I still enjoyed it but throughout the whole tine I kept wishing for deeper role-playing, buildcrafting and other weapons
@johnmarshall20918 ай бұрын
@Mori-ey8wj I can appreciate that. My first run through Sekiro was exhilarating but I was so busy parrying (parrying is a lot harder in Elden Ring) that I didn't pay much attention to more than the basic prosthetics (shuriken, firecrackers, spear, umbrella, sabimaru, etc). But around NG+1, I started to play a bit more with these, and exploring them makes the game a hell of a lot deeper... It'll never be varied in the way any of the others are, but there's more than enough to give huge amounts of creative freedom. The mistraven is great to master and distracting enemies with the whistles is a blast. Even the fistfuls of ash get used now when I play. But none of this is to disagree with you at all. It's definitely not a buildcrafting game in anything like the way you mean, and if that's the *main* attraction, then I get that Sekiro isn't going to rank high. For my part, I'm hoping that the expansion is a bit more Shadows Die Twice of the Erdtree than it's likely to be, because of the mention of martial arts ... but it's definitely going to be amazing either way.
@Kburn19858 ай бұрын
Beating genichiro is #1 in satisfaction. It's a wall you cannot luck or cheese your way through, you need to parry, stomp and mikiri counter each and every one of his moves to win him. You know you got the game down when you beat him, till you reach the next wall, isshin. Isshin taught a lot less, and you could use a lot more strategies, and even semi cheese, so even though he was a wall I found him much less challenging. Malenia is part luck, part AI exploit. You need to run far when she's at 70% health because she'll waterfowl you. After that, you keep dodging close and into her, but if she hasn't done waterfowl for awhile, just approach cautiously and run away. It's a lot of luck frankly.

These games are such a blast when playing with friends, seeing what armor sets and weapons they use, seeing individual play styles melding together, getting new perspectives on challenges that you wouldn’t have known about playing alone. Also, as a lover and experienced player of these games, elitists need to get over the summoning for help shit. Get over it. It’s a function in the game to be utilized as the player sees fit. The reason why some enemies feel easy while others are hard is because there are several types of physical damage (standard, slash, strike, pierce) and several types of elemental damage. Different enemies can be resistant or weak to different types of damage so your one build won't be uniquely powerful against every enemy in the game. Rivers of Blood is a Slash/Pierce weapon, meaning that armored or stone enemies would be resistant to it and would require something like a club/hammer to deal with properly. Not only that, but some enemies are completely immune to bleed status, meaning you're left with raw physical dmg output with your katana. Plus the same enemy can have various health pools and resistance multipliers depending on the area they are in (ie, early game area like Caelid vs later game area like Haligtree). Malenia is your typical Ninja Gaiden boss and the fight reminded me of Alma (NG1) and Elizabeth (NG2) boss battles. So if you play those games a lot Malenia would pretty easy/familiar. The hardest boss was the platforming section leading to Three Fingers and the Frenzied Flame ending.

I think something that’s really cool about these games is how everyone struggles on a different boss. Sure the majority hate Melania, and I am in that category admittedly, but I also breezed through Maliketh. Maliketh and Placi were actually my favorite fights by far in my no summons run. It’s just kinda cool to see who people hate to fight the most

My fav soulslike games are Dark Souls 1, and Demons Souls. The reason for Dark Souls 1, is because the map is REALLY satisfying to figure out and put together, and there are these magic moments where you find shortcuts and can get around the map really quickly. It's like if metroidvanias were 3d, and good. Demons Souls is because it DOESNT have an open map, you can select whatever area you want to go to, and so it gives you that agency to back off and try something else that you get in elden ring. Also the maps are pretty expansive in demons souls, despite it being like a level selection type system, so it still feels open world, especially in the lava area. Oh yea, and the lore behind the bosses in Demons Souls will tear your heart out, big fan of that.

Regarding cutscenes, Souls games never have many of those. But what I found strange in Elden Ring is the cutscene at game start. They were just slides of artwork with a voiceover, while the trailers had amazing real cutscenes. It doesn't really detract from the game for me, but I find it an odd choice.

Great video! If you loved the music you should absolutely play DS3. I’m a veteran of the series and have played all of the FromSoftware games and I can say that the score is DS3 is by far my favorite. I honestly thought the music in Elden Ring was a little underwhelming compared to it.

As a non soulslike player as well (the only soulslike I beat was Stranger Paradise but you have difficulty settings there so idk if that even counts), Elden Ring is one of the best games I have ever played. The design of basically EVERYTHING is so damn good I cannot stop playing. I picked up this game 10 days ago and play about 6h every single day.

I love how similiar our first time playing a game like this experiences are so far (except for the fact you started with your friends). I picked Samurai cuz Katana+Bow sounded nice and parry is not in my skills at all. What I love about games like this (or RDR2, God of War 2018/Ragnarök,...): you can have so much fun doing nothing (for story or progress) at all. Already thinking of playing all the other masterpieces by FromSoftware (if I got time for that, would love to try other games too ofc)

Behind it lies a world of great games, with great settings, great world design and great bosses (or great feelings after you beat those bosses).

The best part about the game design is how they dont force the story and lore down your throat like every other game. No map markers or questline objectives..its up to you to find the lore. Read notes you find, item descriptions, talk to NPC's. This is also my fist FS game and man, what a ride. This is a work of art. Something that is missing in modern gaming.

elden ring was made thinking more on players outside the fanbase than previous games don't feel bad or out of place for not being a veteran fan, that was part of the point for elden ring, but feel welcome to try the rest, just have in mind the older games are great too but they have some serious rough edges or have a more centralized mechanic of game loop than elden ring making it potentially more frustrating or difficult, there are many options and paths to take but nothing as crazy as elden ring

Hey man, great video and a very warm welcome to the souls community. I'd just like to put my two cents in, even though you probably won't see this comment seeing as how you're getting bombarded with them (most of which seem deservedly positive). Firstly, you didn't cheese the game in any way. The game gives you thousands of different options on how to approach any given boss or combat scenario and just because you decided to advertently or inadvertently use some strong things in your playthrough, that doesn't mean your experience was lessened in any way. Hell, you even admit to still having problems with Maliketh despite your "cheese" strats, showing that even the strongest items in this game can still lead to incredibly challenging fights that you just haven't mastered yet and probably won't for hundreds more hours. Anyone telling you otherwise is just a sweaty tryhard who can't get over their shallow views of how these games are "meant to be played". Secondly, while I would agree that nothing beats the first playthrough when it comes to the exploration side of this game, I have unironically found myself having the most fun in this game on many subsequent playthroughs. Purely because of the fact that the skill ceiling of it is so astronomically high. Ignoring how many boss attack wind ups and attacks you can safely attack and heal inbetween, it wasn't even until 200+ hours in the game that I stopped thinking late game enemies (especially Maliketh, I hated that dude for a while like you, now I love the boss) dealt too much damage to me. That's when I really started to delve into support incantations, consumables, ashes of war, managing Talismans for certain fights and carrying side weapons. The game does everything in its power to give you as many possible ways to dictate your own difficulty and once you understand that, you'll see yourself going for playthroughs using "underpowered" weapons and experimenting way more, which will probably lead to you loving many aspects of the game even more and finding dozens of playstyles that suit you. And thirdly, parkour is as easy as it has ever been in these games... And you're right it still fucking sucks from time to time lol. P.S. Once you get good enough at the fight, IMO Malenia unironically becomes the best fight in the game, whether you fully dodge, block or outspace Waterfowl Dance or take the like two or three necessary hits when just light rolling it (that's what I do). Every other attack is dodgable with medium rolls. You can literally even beat the boss while never dodging, just having a 100% block shield in front of you, have her heal with every attack and you just poke her from behind the shield and outdamage her healing and still win.
@lucasmorgan43798 ай бұрын
One of the most relatable thing you said in this video is that parkour sucks in elden ring...just remember all souls games before elden ring didnt have a legit jump button, and they still had parkour areas smh gravity in a souls game is the real end boss 😂 Side note loved the video really well put together
@ETBrooD8 ай бұрын
I hope Fromsoft continues to add parkour sections. They're super helpful for practicing the controls so you become a much better player as a result.

I think what really pulled me into this game was the fact that if you get stuck on something there is ALWAYS something else to go do. You can always come back later when you’re stronger. Made it a lot less frustrating than other fromsoft games.

@ama9385-w2g8 ай бұрын
The waterfowl doesn't even require anything complex you can roll through the first bit normally with a very good timed roll or just a decent one and you take 1 maybe 2 hits, or the other option of running away. Most people just panicked during it and got hit by absolutely every part of the move and then called it bad
@TylerByler8 ай бұрын
I know it’s not even that difficult but I still fumble most of the time I try dodging it lmao. Skill issue I guess
@blegoin26628 ай бұрын
If you dodge back immediately when her feet lift off the ground then start running away you don’t even get hit. This works with medium roll. She does almost catch up to you though so you have to jump.
@domin8tion6518 ай бұрын
The thing is it’s so unclear on how to dodge it the move is bad game design
@ama9385-w2g8 ай бұрын
It doesn't require anything fancy though, either do an extremely well timed roll forward like any other attack or run away the second it starts, again like any other big attack. It just demands a lot more precision from the player@@domin8tion651

I'm a long time fan of Fromsoft. So it's interesting to see what someone with a new perspective has to say. Welcome to the fandom! I think their best games are the smaller ones with more crafted experiences. For me that's Sekiro and Armored Core 6. (Though half of youtube and all of Twitch will yell Bloodborne at you non-stop.) But all of their modern games are great. Even the ones the community likes to dunk on are better than 95% of the games out there. In terms of *non-From* games, Hollow Knight took a lot of inspiration from Fromsoft's design ethos, and while it's a different genre of game, people who like Elden Ring almost always like Hollow Knight. If you specifically want more Souls-style combat, I really liked Lies of P. For me it felt like a game made for series veterans by series veterans, but I've seen a lot of people who started with Elden Ring say they enjoyed it. That said, it's very linear in terms of progression and has a high skill ceiling. So, you'll have to judge for yourself if the game is for you. Still, once that game clicked for me, it clicked hard and I blew through the last 3rd of the game feeling like a god. Wonderful experience. It's hard for real though. Souls feels harder than it is. Lies of P is actually that hard. I personally liked Nioh 2 (Nioh 1 was deeply flawed), but people have pretty mixed opinions on that. Haven't played the new Lords of the Fallen or Remnant 2 so can't comment.

It's interesting you took 15-20 tries on Malenia with a summon and I took 4-5h alone, split aggro is huge. Tbf a buddy took four whole days with summons and doubling her recommended level. But I honestly wish playing with summons or coop had better scaling 'cause playing with pals is a lot of fun. There's mods for it, sure, I just wish the team's idea of making the game easier would be different. And THANK YOU, that bit about the level scaling, it actually made the experience quite a lot worse for me, for example, I killed Radahn my first try just because I explored too muh and robbed me of having a hyped up fight :( . But, overall, regardless of the flaws here and there, the game's amazing.
@AegisKHAOS8 ай бұрын
I don't have any real issue with the scaling. The difficulty spike in the late game was a massive shock for me when I went to Farum Azula and the Haligtree. I understand WHY the spike, but it still felt overwhelming the first time. That said, never played a Souls game till Elden Ring, and I have no regrets buying it. I actually played it as soon as I got it despite some hesitation to dying alot simply because, at that point, I was ready for a change of pace. Platinumed the game and sank ALOT of hours into it ever since.
