ARUSHA CITY, TANZANIA - Increased collaboration between Arusha city's local government authority and water utility is contributing to eradicating open defecation and redressing the sanitation challenge of limited sewer connections. Towards creating a more robust safely managed sanitation service chain, improvements in sanitation governance are complemented by behaviour change communication efforts and the upgrade of sanitation services. Together, these strategies are giving rise to a city where (i) demand for on-site sanitation faecal sludge management services is increasing, (ii) sanitation services are becoming more reliable and responsive, and (iii) the work of emptiers is being conducted safely and gaining better recognition as a profession.
