The halls in the universities are like communities where bonds of friendships are fostered with a unity of purpose. Where each member is responsible for the well-being of the hall members in school and possibly after school. So during hall weeks activities are geared towards kindling the camaraderie among it's members and coming together to address pertinent issues affecting the members. Old members of the hall are invited to encourage and share their experiences with the present members. This bond extends even after school into the society where members continue to be each others keeper.

Lily, in Ghana we don't observe hall weeks merely because of the physical infrastructure in our halls of residence. It is due to the academic laurels, prominent personalities who once resided in those halls. In the SHS we call it house not halls. Halls in Ghana are named after founders, prominent persons in history. At times inter hall competitions generate into riots and commotions and destruction of properties on campus.

Lily, you cant talk of Katanga Hall without talking about UNITY HALL(CONTINENTAL HALL) at KNUST as they are fierce rivals on your next video. Your affiliated hall can either make you or not make you. Even if one dreams of vying for the position of SRC presidency, one main factor is the hall you are affiliated to as their support alone can make you win it 😉.

In Ghana universities and let me talk about KNUST in particular because that is my alma matter. Not only do the students take pride of being a product of the school but also of the halls of residence they belong to. Every hall has its culture. I completed KNUST in 2007 and that time, the only male halls were Katanga (University hall) and Conti( continental hall). They had this tradition where they will make girls who wore red and came to their halls very uncomfortable. They will be clapping utensils together shouting "korkor oo korkor" meaning red o red. It was all for fun. I think it was worse at Kantaga than Continental hall. Also, we take our hall week celebrations very seriously. The best hall week was by Republic Hall and even Guiness Ghana are one of the sponsors. That shows how huge it is. For Katanga, they have procession every single day of the week from Monday to Friday from their halls to the academic side and each day has its theme. There are days they dress religious,so you will see Katanga boys dress like fetish priests going to lectures, some dress like pastors, some dress like imams. There are days they dress like women...yes women😅. Imagine macho boys dressed in mini skirts, wearing wigs and in makeup and heels walking so funny in their procession. It is all for fun. And on Saturday, they have a grand concert. I remember when I was in first year, they brought mapuka dancers from ivory Coast. It is a big deal. There are fairs where people sell their merchandise to students. It's a whole festival. I hope this gives you a better clarification.
