I love that the Nobel Prize people have learnt to be brief. The science fair ceremonies I've been at myself as a winner have been like 3 times as long despite them being an event for children and teenagers who'd all like to get their prize and leave rather than sit in a lecture theater and listen to local politicians make grand speeches for 3 hours in total.

Back in... umm... 2002 for work I had to go from Bristol to Malmö via Amsterdam just to type a single command on a server console (don't ask) and was stuck in a Swedish hotel overnight. Having no Internet access, I switched on the room TV for live coverage of the Nobel Prize ceremony. During a lull, up pops the Swedish equivalent of a Dimbleby in black tie for a piece to camera. Covering the dinner guests between speeches, the camera was lingering for ages on the gorgeous Princess Madeleine when suddenly he dipped into English for a local adage: "Why haf but öne deesh when you kan haf duh shhmörgåsbord!?" To this day I wish I knew what he was on about.

My grandmother has been watching the nobel prize banquet and ceremony every year her entire life. And so have _many_ others. So yea, it's a pretty big deal here in Sweden. And unlike you, I believe you did deserve to go. You've done more for science in how you communicate it, than many scientists manage to do in their lifetimes. Well earned, imho.

"This is like the Oscars" I disagree, sir. This is MUCH more prestigious than the Oscars. There is no comparison between people amusing others by pretending to be someone else, and people who significantly improve the future of Humanity by making huge scientific advances.

Brady looking swish in that tuxedo! Where can I find some of those shoes? They look great. I'd also point out, Brady, that far from not being deserving of an invite, you have done for science communication and introduction, what the professors do for their students by inviting them. Showing people what science is like for real, with real professionals and academics. But on a global scale. Yes. You have earned that invite!

In Scandinavia there is a huge thing for sailor hat parties at graduation and getting hammered on a pub crawl. Go to Copenhagen in midsummer and you will see and hear groups of students hiring usually an army-style lorry and going on a pub crawl, blaring out music, waving banners and blowing whistles.

43:13 I would love that, and I've thought about doing it. It would be cool to track the progress of science through all the prizes, since they often build on each other. It would also be cool to hear about the people who won and if what they discovered is still relevant today.

I think the "sailor caps" are graduation caps from high school and similar level of educations before university, at least they look like that in Denmark and I'm pretty sure in Sweden as well. But I guess they might have caps like this in University as well in Sweden, that I don't know about.
@OlliWilkman
@OlliWilkman Күн бұрын
We have pretty much the same caps in Finland, too. They're high school graduation caps, but they are also the ceremonial cap of the university student. Historically, they started as university students' caps and later became high school graduation caps. It used to be the same thing, because the high school final exam was the university entrance exam. In Finland, university students used to wear a blue cap (like some Estonian students still do) in the early 1800s, but some students switched to a "Swedish-style" white cap in 1864 and it became the norm. That white cap originated in Germany, and it came from there through Denmark and Sweden to Finland. These days, all high school graduates get a cap with the symbol of the University of Helsinki on the front, because that used to be the only university. But if you go to a different university these days, you might replace it with the symbol of your alma mater, if you care enough about these things.

Traditionalists will wear a blue cap in winter and a white cap in summer, except it's always a white cap with tails. In this respect, summer starts on Valborgsmässoafton, last of April, so universities will have a cap ceremony as part of their celebrations.
@Einyen
@Einyen 16 сағат бұрын
@@OlliWilkman Thanks. I actually went to university in Denmark in the late 90s, and we didn't have caps like that. So I'm not sure if Denmark doesn't have them or only some universities, or if it started later.

They could do a Disney style "The Nobel Experience" show... You purchase tickets first by filling out a form that looks like one of those applications to publish in a journal, of course checking the box for the VIP experience where you get to sit on the stage and get a souvenir plastic medal presented to you by an actor dressed like the King of Sweden.. In between presentations, you get typical Disney song and dance numbers and then you get bussed to a typical theme park cafeteria where you line up with a tray and pay exorbitant prices for mediocre fare, unless you purchased the VIP ticket, in which case the meal is bundled and you also get a glass of mediocre wine or spirit of your choice, and then everyone files into the eating area which is superficially decorated to resemble the banquet hall and then afterward, you exit through the gift shop where you can purchase photos of yourself take by strategically placed overhead cameras and other keepsakes and souvenirs like posters, pencils, plastic medal replicas, stuff dolls of Alfred Nobeland of course the obligatory T-shirt that has a formal tuxedo front printed on the front and "Disney's Nobel Experience" across the back..

Why do you call them sailor hats? They are the kind of hat used whith many uniforms. Do sailors even use them?
@ugthump2753
@ugthump2753 Күн бұрын
White caps are used by the Australian Navy. The UK and USA also use them. Officers wear a cap with a black peak, but a bit bigger than those the students wore. So the student caps look a bit more like an ordinary seaman's (sailor's) cap than an officer's cap.

OK, well you’re handing each other prizes I am sending out a message that we need to write a universal constitution for all living things to include life that we have not met and artificial intelligence. We can unify the world and take care of each other and the environment easily. Everyone needs to stop concentrating on their one area and work on the big picture of what can absolutely save us. This is the next step in social evolution and we need it to happen now after we prepared a little bit. I’ve ran this through three different major AI companies and all of them agree and it’s also economically better for all of society along with getting rid of most of our major problems that are true threats to humanity and every other species.
