I had some takeaways from this video. Always expect miracles, both large and small, and then revel in them when they happen. Be ready for anything that might come your way. Have your special outfits cleaned and ready for surprises. Keep your hair and nails ready always. Let yourself be enthralled at something new. A life of preparation isn’t boring, it’s exciting!

When I lived in Sydney I would treat myself to a night out at the opera every couple months. I went alone because I didn’t know anyone interested in Opera. I was enchanted with the whole experience. I thoroughly embarrassed myself by sobbing in Madame Butterfly. Not pretty little tears, no; sobbing, runny nose and all, trying not to snort loudly. I will never go without a handkerchief again.

A critic in Sweden referred to it as the "mandatory Puccini sob" with nose running and all. My oldest daughter played the child in Madama Butterfly when she was little, at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, I sobbed too!

I would do the same, Sydney Opera house on my own. I liked to stand with a glass of champagne and orange juice and look out over the harbour in the interval, it was the only time I could view the harbour without the glorious, glistening sails of the opera house distracting me and dominating the view.

I recently had the opportunity to perform in the ensemble of La Bohème with Nashville Opera this past fall! It was my first time performing in an opera and Such a wonderful experience. My three children and husband attended and I know they appreciated the translation above the stage. I’ve been a fan of yours for several years now. Lovely to see you out at the opera! I agree wholeheartedly that more young people should try to get out and experience this unique way of storytelling.

Loved the sisterly love! Makes me miss my sisters! I worked at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC for about a year. Not singing! In the gift shop 😂 The people watching was definitely fascinating. There are people there from all walks of life. Opera doesn’t have to be stuffy like people might think. The opera die hards weren’t stuffy people, they just loved opera so much, some worked in the shop to get discounted tickets. You’d be amazed at their knowledge of the composers, the singers, the productions, the language, etc. Patrons wore everything from evening gowns and furs, to jeans. Attending the opera can be a magical night, especially at the Met. Have you seen Moonstruck? Thanks for a wonderful video Jennifer!! ❤️ 🎶

Wow Jennifer! This video is so close to my heart. My Mother who past away at age 74 was born and lived in New York until she married. At the age of 19 she auditioned for the Metropolitan Opera. She was chosen as an understudy for the main character. I don't know what play that was. She sang in French and Italian. Long story short, she met my father, married and had children. Although she was extremely talented, she gave up her singing carrier to raise us. She sang all my life as a child in the house every day and sometimes at night I would hear her singing and playing the piano. I have all of her music scores and opera sheet music and her hand writing of her notes. Opera was a special part of my life that takes me back in time. I wish I could send you pictures of her singing on stage. Thank you for sharing your Night at the Opera with your sister. I really enjoyed it. ❤

In 1994 I was a freshman at the University of Dallas. They had a wonderful program there called the Dallas Year program. It enabled college students to attend the Dallas Opera for only two or three dollars per ticket. My first semester I took a music class where we learned not only music theory, but the stories behind the operas. I was able to attend La Boheme, among others. It really made this type of art not only accessible, but real for us. I will always be grateful for that.

You and your sister both looked stunning, well dressed for the opera! 🌹As someone who has studied and loved opera for years and years, thank you so much for endeavoring to make it more approachable for the average person! I used to be part of a little troupe that traveled to different elementary schools to teach the little ones about opera. My main aria was "Quando men vo" from Boheme and I always had a blast chewing the scenery with that one! People always complain about the so-called language barrier. The supertitles do help, and I find that if the singers are good enough actors, you will know (roughly) what is going on anyway! There are also plenty of operas that are performed in English 😁

I must admit, I've never been to an opera! I've been to the ballet several times, and symphony performances, and I loved each and every one. Getting dressed up and enjoying masterfully performed live art is just so thrilling, especially when you get to have a special dinner beforehand or after performance treat! I remember when I was a teenager (who had been involved in dance for my whole school career), the magical experience of my parish priest taking me to the ballet and then having dessert and coffee at a very fancy hotel restaurant after, it was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

I love going to the opera and am lucky to live in Houston, which has the wonderful Houston Grand Opera. Tosca is one of my favorites. In Houston, one sees everything from ballgowns to jeans with blazers. It is less about the attire and more about the experience. Opera audiences are usually very well mannered - it is rare to hear someone talking loudly (as happened when I saw Baryshnikov at the ballet in Houston) or cell phones ringing (as happens occasionally at the symphony). There is something about the beautiful voices, gorgeous costumes, sets, props and melodramatic storylines that make the opera experience extra special. Loved this video.

Thank you for being so kind about opera and explaining to people the myths about opera. My mother studied opera at the New England Conservatory in Boston. She and my father took me to my first opera when I was 5 years old. I went every year until the Met stopped coming to Boston. But there were other productions of opera I use to go to, including 30 miles from Boston in Concord, MA. I even went to New Hampshire once to see a Sicilian puppet show (very large puppets) in a production of Tosca. It was surreal, but interesting. I remember visiting Italy and actually seeing Castel Saint Angelo, the building Tosca supposedly threw herself off of. That was very exciting for me and every time I see a picture of that building I think of Tosca. I saw Madam Butterfly in Milan at La Scala, a Franco Zefferelli production, while working in Milan for one of my hi tech companies I was employed at, it was sublime. My favorite opera is La Traviata, followed by La Boheme. My mother loved those two operas and would regularly sing them in the house. Sempre Libre was her favorite and mine too. Thanks again. And to dress nice is a sign of respect to the artists.

When I was young and had opportunities to see an opera, I would check the libretto out of the library and read it beforehand so I’d be able to follow the story. As an adult, my husband and I had the opportunity to see Turandot. It was the first time I ever saw the libretto flashed on the stage like subtitles. It made the whole experience so much more enjoyable.

Love this story! So fun! I have a lovely opera memory. I saw Carmen in Verona, Italy in the ancient Roman ampitheatre. It was held in the evening and as the overture began everyone in the crowd lit little tapers which were handed out. The candlelight spread through the twilight and it was one of the most captivating experiences of my life! I was struck what a cultural affair it was there. Every kind of person attended! All kinds of dress too. Fancy Ball gowns and tuxedos on the ground floor but up in the cheap seats mostly street wear. Such good people watching!

Because I love opera, I was tickled to watch this video of you getting ready and watching Tosca, one of my favorite operas. You and your sister both look stunning (I want that SKYE dress and the Charlotte Tilbury palette!), and I am glad that night was magical for both of you. I have watched several operas in my life, including La Bohème, Manon, Il Trovatore (starting the dream team of Anna Netrebko and the late Dmitri Hvorostovsky), and Tosca, and it felt like heaven every time. I am dreaming of my next night at the opera. 🎵 P.S. If I do get a jewelry box like yours, I want it to play “Vissì d’Arte.”

The second opera I went to was The Magic Flute. I had emailed a friend who works at the local classical station if she knew where I could get discounted tickets. She ended up leaving me a ticket at will call that was just a few rows from the front. My favorite memory at this one was when Papageno broke out in "Deep in the Heart of Texas". That is so fun!! Sister girls nights are the best. 🥰 I had the pleasure of attending Madame Butterfly in Houston with the French club in high school! It has definitely been way too long.

How fun! You look so beautiful and elegant! I am inspired to go see an opera now! As a musician, (harpist) I love music, and my Italian grandpa and great grandpa were singers, so this is especially dear to me. My great grandpa immigrated from Abruzzi, Italy, having sung with a trio called “The Neapolitan Troubadours”.
