An absolute MUST if you are visiting St Petersburg in Russia is the historic and opulent Mariinsky Theatre. It is home to some of the world's most talented ballet dancers and has been a pillar of inspiration for those interested in the arts. I had an absolutely unforgettable night here watching Les Sylphides and hope you enjoy the inside look to what is like to go to the ballet in Russia. Even better, I hope you try it out for yourself! xo

What I like about Russian ballet performances is that you see quite a lot of children in the audience. Compared to the west it seems that many more Russian parents find it important that their their children learn to appreciate classic art (ballet, classical music, literature).

That is very true. I was dragged against my will as a kid and remember finding it very boring, but something obviously did stick and I have a great appreciation for it now.

@@AlinaMcleod Russian education uses classical art, classicism in all its forms since the young age. It start with classical architecture of Moscow and St. Petersburg buildings, classical performances based on Pushkin's fairy-tales in kindergartens, studying classical literature in school and visiting classical theater performances based on Dostoyevskii, Tolstoy, Chekhov, etc., classical concerts on TV and... ending with classical music at funerals )) You must have noticed all these things while in Russia.

Classical education and upbringing in Russia begins from early childhood: first, the puppet theater, then the drama theater, opera and ballet theater, and only, somewhere in the 15-17 years, concerts of your favorite pop singers take place.

@Eni....Eni, in the West you go to a theater to see and hear the performance, not to hear a damn kid crying and screaming. So, why take a kid to a performance they are not interested besides being expensive.

We were there two years ago to see a ballet We were a bit disappointed to see such a beautiful theater but so poorly maintained. We had front row and the seats were very uncomfortable. The cushions were worn out. I know what you mean, we could hardly take any pictures as we were rushed out as soon as the performance was over. The lights were quickly turned off and the attendants were not pleasant. The Bolshoi Theater in Moscow was a far better better experience, it was amazing. Your video is on point.

I loved watching this! I saw this theatre during the World Cup in 2018 when I was also studying a summer intensive Russian course at SPGU. Our classes were at the Smolny Sobor)). To me this theatre needs some refurbishment to get back to its grandiose past. I smelled dust similar to the smell of the Odessa Opera Theatre before it was refurbished. Now for me, Odessa's theatre surpasses the classic Marinsky in beauty but not in size. The new Marinsky or Marinsky 2 is amazing! The acoustics are second to none and were designed by a Canadian architectural firm. I saw two operas there during the famous White Nights toward the end of June, the Barber of Seville and La Traviata, starring the one and only Placido Domingo as the father of the protagonist who falls in love with a prostitute. His voice is weaker now but his reputation sold out the house that night. He also sang in Red Square during the Opening Ceremonies and Closing Gala. It was really strange, but beautiful coming out of the theatre at 10:30pm to watch the sunset over the canal adjacent to Marinsky 2. Did you take the canal excursion or see the Marinsky 2? Those were my faves in addition to the new soccer stadium for Zenit with a retractible roof that resembles the Jetson's flying saucer on the bank of the Gulf of Finland, Kronstadt Island, Tsarskoye Selo, Pavlovsk, and of course The Peterhof))).

Слово сорт в русском языке применяется к товару разного качества. Высший сорт, первый сорт и т. Д. К людям это применяют только в превосходной степени "высший сорт". It is great you were able to attend, too bad I did not know, I would have volunteered as your escort for the evening. Mariinsky 1 is beautiful and in the typical horseshoe layout so it is tall and narrow so everyone has a good sightline. Mariinsky II is actually an entire classical music/opera theater, production and rehearsal complex. The main hall seats 5,000 and it is known to have spectacular acoustics, ranked as the best. It is very modern but better or symphonies and opera. Like you, I never cared about opera but 12 years ago was seeing a girl who loved opera so bought a series of tickets for her and after the first act, I realized I finally got it, it made sense to me. I had worked in music production most of my life and worked with a lot of top pop/rock singers but opera did nothing for me. Since that first series of 6 operas, now I really enjoy it and appreciate the tremendous talent involved. So I got an important gift from that relationship, an appreciation for opera even though she did not stick around. One thing Mariinsky really stands out for, besides the world-class performances is the set designs, with the tall over-stage area there are very elaborate large scale sets. Mariinsky was the first such theater with automated computer-based set handling with complex railings high backstage that can replace the most elaborate set panels quickly and permit a weekend double performance of different ballets or operas to be handled with complex 2-3 story high sets. I think you need to stay here, it suits you perfectly and there are lots of opportunities for your skills. Canada will be so boring and provincial after St Petersburg.

I would love to see the Nutcracker at the Mariinsky theater, the version with Vasily Vainonen's choreography. I have a blu-ray of the performance I watch every Christmas. I would weep tears of joy to be able to experience it in person. Thanks so much for uploading this video giving a taste of the legendary place.

Dear Alina: The theater is beautiful, and you looked great in that place. I don't know if you went to ballet in Cuba. The ballet company there is also very good, and grew a lot with the Russian and North American tradition of classical ballet. Kisses.

Below is the description for an Evening at the Russian Ballet for my Princess cruise in August 2022...To bad we don't know which theater we are going to Experience a classic Russian ballet performed by a local troupe in one of St. Petersburg's historic theater venues, a special opportunity that is a perfect choice after a day of seeing the sights. St. Petersburg is famous for its rich theatrical life. In old times, the Russian nobility took a deep interest in ballet, encouraging and supporting the construction of theaters in St. Petersburg. Today the city boasts a large number of exquisite 19th century theatrical buildings. Several theatres are world famous such as the Mikhailovsky, Hermitage, Alexandrinsky theaters. You will be visiting one of these or other historic venues for an evening of classic Russian Ballet. Dress to impress, then board your comfortable motorcoach as you drive from the port into a city that sparkles at night. Upon arrival you will be escorted to your seat. The music swells, the curtain rises and you are transported into a world of grace, beauty, love and immortality. Lose yourself in the passion and mystery of classical ballet and be swept away by the timeless love stories that unfold before your eyes. The repertoire is always changing, but you'll be treated to a locally produced performance of one of the classics, such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Giselle or Sleeping Beauty, or you might see a selection of scenes from a variety of shows. During intermission, toast to this lovely evening with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. At the conclusion of the evening, gaze out the window and watch the sights go by as you return to the ship after your memorable evening.
