Nobuo Uematsu's background and the results is what makes him so interesting. He grew up listening to hard rock and progressive rock from America, joined a prog rock band and made music for commercials, and sure enough he found his niche in video games in his mid 20's. The fact that he came out as one of the greatest composers of all time is always incredible.

I think Lee Anne is onto something with her take of Schala's theme. in a story about time travel where people's lives are saved by changing history, Schala is the one truly tragic figure because (canonically at least) she's the one person that you want to be able to use time travel to save but can't, at least not in Chrono Trigger.

Morrowind's main theme is what sold me on the game. I was at a friend's house in like 2002/03 looking at his collection of Xbox games and was intrigued by a cover that looked like it was made of parchment. He said I could try it out, so I popped the disk in and was immediately inundated by the bass drum beating like a heart followed by the woodwinds playing the melody. I got goosebumps and a tingle down my spine as the title appeared on screen. I had to have this game. And to this day it's still my all-time favorite.

"Why do we malign Pop?" is a question I believe applies directly to video game music. Even though games have gone relatively mainstream and have largely escaped being labeled as childish, they're generally considered a form of Pop media and they're treated as such. There are also major problems with the discoverability and distribution of video game music. They're viewed as a subset of a broader piece of media and are primarily accessible via that media while often not being made available via the tradition pipelines for music distribution.

yep it sometimes can be a hassle to find the albums even if they are on streaming platforms, sometimes the album is in another language and you have to pray someone else saved it on a playlist or is incomplete in some ways, last I checked the bloodborne ost was up to "vanilla"/"on release" ost, so no DLC tracks or even tho this one is not videogames exactly the ost for made in abyss was there for a time, then it was completely gone and one day it reappeared, same as, IIRC, the aot ost on tidal; it was there and then it wasn't
@thanatos7007
@thanatos7007 11 ай бұрын
We don't malign pop, for the most part, we just don't think much about it at all. That's why it's pop. Pop is a sort of non-genre containing all art that is made with an eye towards it's disposability. If something is released as a pop song, but has real staying power we all quietly shuffle it into a different genre by a largely unspoken consensus. It's disposability that really links video games and pop music. Metal Gear Solid couldn't be sold for years because the licence for some historical footage ran out in 2008 and Konami didn't elect to renew it until 2023. What's important to understand about this is that they could have bought a perpetual licence for this footage. It's actually the more common type sold, it's only very marginally more expensive than a limited licence. Konami chose the cheaper option because they knew that Metal Gear Solid wouldn't work on whatever computers were going to be common in 10 years, and they were mostly right about that. Video games are built with an understanding that their days a numbered by the constant advancement of technology.

Love how often you've had Chris Christodoulou in your line ups! He really deserves the recognition and I personally feel beyond just his ror2 track, his original RoR tracks are fantastic and his OST to Deadbolt is probably my second favorite album of all time, the remake of RoR has both the original and new tracks, remade some with vocals, and all with everything he's learned musically since the original RoR. I've also heard that apparently when he get hired on for work, he just disappears for like a few months, and just reappears at some point in development of a game with the full OST finished.

I really enjoy you showing pices from the LoZ franchise because so many of the games (especially in the early and mid 2000's ) focus on musical instruments that help you solve puzzles and fight bosses. OoT with the Ocerena, Windwaker where you use a conductors baton, and Spirit Tracks using the Pan Flute where you literally have to blow into the DS microphone to play the instrument.

Something I would recommend Marco, if you (rightfully) love the medieval cathedral vibes of Tenebre Rosso Sangue from Ultrakill as much as you seem to, may I recommend a Vampire Survivor and Dead Cells OSTs' reaction? It doesn't go AS hard as it (Vampire Survivor is chiptune w/ repetition, and Dead Cells in general is a bit more methodical, wider, takes its time a little) I'd start with "Forest Night Fever", "Disco Inferno", "I'm Every Reaper", "Reincarnated Echoes", "Peji Eighteen", "Moms are tough" for Vampire Survivors,; and "Title", "Prisoner's Awakening", "Promenade of the Condemned", "Prison's Depths", "Collector's Theme", and "Fractured Shrines" for Dead Cells; does anyone else have good suggestions for either? Once you get the idea of any of these feel free to pontificate. I'm anticipating you could draw a ten-to-twelve minute video out of each. Also - I don't have time to go over its OST right now, but maybe do a poll for what Subnautica tracks are good, too, that one is phenomenal as a soundtrack and a playthrough would be something I think you might appreciate, too - that game's use of atmosphere in conjunction with its soundtrack is out of this world.

@@mr2Dman Yes, but the original version of Tetris didn't have any music. Nintendo's Hirokazu Tanaka implemented music in the NES version, and the GameBoy version is the first to feature Korobeiniki, again implemented by Hirokazu Tanaka. So the iconic Tetris Theme is a Japanese arrangement of Nikolaï Nekrassov's Korobeiniki!

Ah, Gerudo Valley. The best hidden boss theme in all of video gaming. This is Ganon's theme. The solitary masculine guitar/trumpet theme surrounded by the more feminine flamenco accompaniment is the perfect representation of a once in a century male being born into a world where he is destined to be king without anyone to show him what being a king is. A great man who wants his struggling people to prosper... at any and all costs.

Grandma, just so lovely to hear. And Lady Maria of the Astral Clock Tower is amazing. I love to play with music that has a choir in it. Whats with the weird voice coming up at the beginning of the Morrowind theme? Sounds like an AI trying to translate noise.

Some of y'all are not hating the game (KZbin) instead of the player. The algorithm is cruel.

@@classyrobot5648 KZbin buries content that doesn't sell ad revenue. When you pick a section of a video, then leave? Less pop-up ads. So less payout and also less reach (much bigger deal, probably).

@@geovaughan8261 I mean, KZbin ain't a democracy. And they really /do not care/ as long as people watch and ads sell. But we stop watching (not happening anyway) and the creators suffer first and most. It's a nice little quagmire.

Video games have a general cultural perception issue that extends to the music as well, but if I give it a thought... Video game music in it's infancy was best suited to "blips and bloops" as they unaffectionately call it as well as a focus on short loops that don't have the traditional structure of more conventional music. Now technology progressed rapidly during videogames infancy so these didn't last very long but unfortunately that first impression has hang on through a lot of peoples mind. This is especially bad for those who viewed them as throwaway toys and only interacted with them as young children with your Mario Bros and Tetris and the like, locking that in their mind as "what video games are". It certainly doesn't help culturally there's a lot of video games individuals both creators and players who want to be "as cool as their big brothers" of film, an almost shame of what video games are to them and want to be respected for the wrong reasons. We've got a long way to go sadly to treat video games for what they are instead of the shallow idea many latch onto.

Pretty sure you'll have a way easier time selling video game music to old classical music lovers than to sell classical music to gamers. Gamers have backlogs of game to play, their time is scheduled for the next 30 years and that's not counting any video game than might come out during that time...
