I had a similar experience with this book and I've been going back and forth about picking up the sequels. I did read the prequel novella, which ratchets up the cosmic horror stuff to 11. Not sure if I liked it more or less than this one though.

The cosmic horror stuff was cool. Kind of wish we got more of it in this first book.

@@TomOrange Agreed. That was the best part to me and the reason I'm still considering picking up the next book. haha

Been meaning to read this. I didn't like Akhtar's book Lightblade, so I've been weary -- but that cover and that title. Wow!

The cover is awesome. So really cool artwork out there for this series.

One of my favorites from that time period!

Oh no! I can tell from what you shared that this will probably not be for me. It’s on my shelf, but I might donate it. Thanks for your thoughts!

There are people who will really enjoy this book. Just seems like we are not part of the group. Donating books is awesome!

I felt the same. I read it through an audiobook. The narrator had the same voice for each character so it was hard to understand which character was for each chapter. Thanks for the review
@TomOrange11 ай бұрын
I had a similar experience with that audiobook as well

I ripped through the first 25% of this book in one day. Then the next 75% took me over a month to read. I feel your points are spot on and I’ll have to go back and change my rating on it. I haven’t thought about this book once since I finished it. I’m definitely waiting to read the sequels.

Yeah it seems like a book that will just fade away for me too

I'm curious: do you read multiple books a week or day? Or one book at a time?
@TomOrange11 ай бұрын
I normally have one audio book and one kindle or physical book going at one time. If im reading or listening to a super long book sometimes I will pause and read something else.

Great review Tom, even if the book wasnt for you. We learn something from every ready, and hopefully the next one is 5 stars!

Ugh always a bummer when you come across a dud. But on the bright side, makes you appreciate the truly fantastic ones! Probably won’t give this one a shot

So far this month has been full of duds unfortunately

My experience was exactly the same. I don't think any part of me wants to carry on with the series. One of the major draws to even try it was that it was from a culture I don't see a lot from. There were also a lot of times where I had to go back and figure out which character we were following in a chapter because they just felt so similar. I kept waiting for this "amazing book" to click and it didn't.

I had the same issue for a lot of the book. I had to look at the chapter title to know who I was following
