Happy 20th anniversary. Luigi's Mansion! And by association, happy 20th anniversary to the GameCube as well. Hope you enjoy this retrospective on a classic Nintendo title!

I actually tried something I never did before with this game, which is to adjust the brightness as the game intended (adjust until the Boos on the right image disappear completely). And it makes the game way better!! Some scenes like the dark hallways, and the mansion blackout sequence, as well as bosses such as Bogmire, and the final boss look way more spooky with the brightness adjusted. It feels like the developers wanted that brightness adjustment to be the definitive way to play it.
@CloudConnection3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! I bet that would make it a lot more unnerving, especially if it's on an CRT TV with the proper coloring. I'll have to try it the next time I play Luigi's Mansion!
@MrGojira953 жыл бұрын
@@CloudConnection I actually tried the lowered brightness on an HD TV. It looks way better with the brightness adjusted, and shows how well the graphics aged. I do remember how good it would look playing it on a CRT TV.

I know this has been said time and time again, but the original Luigi's Mansion actually felt like a horror game--albeit heavily watered down to not actually scare people. Dark Moon and 3 are great in their own right, but they severely lack that ominous atmosphere the original had, and that's why it feels so different compared to its sequels. When I tell people I prefer the first Luigi's Mansion, it's not entirely a nostalgia bias because I genuinely love it for the mood and feel it offers.
@CloudConnection3 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more! Feels like the later games emphasize mystery over horror. Which works well enough; as I said in the video, I like Dark Moon and 3. But something was definitely left behind from the original
@ultrairrelevantnobody18623 жыл бұрын
Even then, the first isn't my favourite due to how unintuitive it can feel as well as the really short length with not a lot of replay value.
@connorl31243 жыл бұрын
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 I actually think this game has a lot of replay value due to its short length. Despite beating the game nearly 35 times, boolosus and a few portrait ghosts, looking at you biff and the toy soldiers!
@ultrairrelevantnobody18623 жыл бұрын
I find the game too monotonous to replay it much. It's a decent game, one that deserved better back in the day, but not exactly a near masterpiece.
@CloudConnection3 жыл бұрын
That's a fair point, you're right that the game is monotonous at its core. Personally I think the gameplay's fun enough to allow me to look past that, and the short length means it doesn't have the chance to get boring.

I’ve played this one countless times on the 3DS. That goofy, cowardly, green-clad beanpole has vacuumed his way into my heart. Can’t wait for your reviews on the rest of the series!

Definitely play the original when you can. Not in a gatekeep-y kinda way, more so- I just really recommend the experience. Believe it or not the particle effects go a LONG way and the immersion sucks you in like you wouldn't believe

I have such a mixed vibe with Luigi's Mansion. While the original is my personal favorite in terms of atmosphere and concept, I always felt like it was a little lacking in mechanics. The later games definitely brought more mechanics, but didn't quite capture the aesthetic I loved so much from the original. I agree with you that we'll probably never see another game like the original Luigi's Mansion until some indie devs try to recapture that magic, but that's a fairly bittersweet thought. 3 was a good game, but I dunno, there was something about the original mansion and its portrait ghosts that was genuinely unforgettable to me.

What makes the first game my favorite out of the LM series is the Combat, Capturing felt so engaging and satisfying to do when compare to either entries that involve an overpowered gimmick that's either too relied on or makes the Combat stale after a short while.

I also kind of prefer the lack of a dedicated Dodge (like LM2's jump), too. I don't know, I find it oddly more satisfying to dodge a punch by pushing towards the ghost I'm holding on to.

Despite how much I love the haunted house atmosphere and ghost design, there is just something that really bothers me about the whole series. Most of the ghosts don't seem to be aggressive until they're provoked, many of them are just doing their own thing with some just straight up minding their own business (i.e. the ghost catching up on some reason, the pianist, the sleeping little girl, the director, etc.) so why are you busting them!? It makes it seem like Luigi is the aggressor. You can count the number of hostile ghosts in the series on two hands, yet the dozens of others react to the player the same way you would act if you came across a toad in your garden. Hell, even the Boos ain't attacking you, and are actively trying to get away from you. I doubt to many people would like the fate of being stuck in a picture for all eternity, and the HUGE issue of Gadd using the ghosts as slaves in the sequel makes this game series downright questionable! Why is this aspect of the game never really brough up!? I'm probably overthinking this by miles, but I can't get around it! In the first game, Neville is literally just sitting there reading, not bothering the world or his wife! Why do you have to bust him!?! He's not bothering anyone, and the same goes for most of the other ghosts in this series!! It really reminds me of the Bigfoot hunting mission in RDR Undead Nightmare.

I never understand why everyone makes excuses that this is not a horror game. Most horror games start as Action and adventure games or other type of genres while having horror in the genre to right?
@VonFirflirch Жыл бұрын
I imagine it's merely because it's not *actually* scary. It would never happen, but I'd love to see a legitimately terrifying Luigi's Mansion game. Same mechanics and all, but the enemies' designs are on par with "actual" horror games' along with unnerving imagery (like a genuine take on the "Hanged Luigi" hoax and whatnot) x)

It was around the holiday season of 2001, I was 7 and having a great time in the first grade, and one day my dad came home with two new consoles and a few games that I had wanted for a while: the Xbox with Oddworld and Shrek, and, of course, the brand-new Gamecube with Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion! It was a good day. This game is one of those cherished memories of mine. The sequels that Next Level Games developed were good, but for me neither of them captured the heart of the original.
