It's mid-morning, at the moment, and I've been up all night. So, I may come back and edit this later, in case I say anything totally incomprehensible. Moments like these are thoroughly unpredictable. But thanks for this peek into your practice. Your drawing styles are so varied, yet all so successful. I've really enjoyed the short snippets of sketchbook work you've shown us over the last couple of years. I seem to recall one session at a river or a beach, where there were also cows? Watching you work is always educational, in itself. In this episode, seeing how you used the lighter-colored, broad-tip marker to block in shapes that you later refined with a fine-tipped marker was particularly instructive. I love how that drawing (and the one from the bleed-through) turned out. Also love the jackdaws, of course. And the use of collage. Sometimes, as with the fineline drawing of the seated guy in the ball cap, it's hard to tell what's collage and what's drawing or painting. That mystery is good for drawing me, for one, into a work. Thanks again for showing us this. (I'm envious of your having a zoology museum close by!)

Thank you for sharing your amazing sketch book! So many great ideas in such a small package. Very much looking forward to seeing more of these! I just stitched up a few sketchbooks of similar thickness to yours. The idea was to have a few to work on at the same time. When I work with wet mediums I am so impatient for letting things dry before the next step or turning the page, hopefully having a few to rotate through will help. Cheers to more sketchbook work in 2023!

Love that: “Cheap as Chips”. I think your sketchbooks are perfect! What you say is debatable.. I still can’t seem to part with using lined notebook paper or worse- the backs of papers sent to me in the mail (bills, doctor’s office notes, etc) fold lines and all. I have no idea why, but if I buy the fancy expensive art materials I tank. If I sketch on what basically amounts to someone else’s trash, I do my best work. 🫤??? Love your videos and your work! I really appreciate the ideas and techniques. I got into gel plates a few years ago. I am HOOKED! Thanks so much for sharing.

I bought a very similar notebook at the end of the summer, it certainly got me committing things to paper again… so great for not getting that feeling of things not being good enough, less than a couple of quid so no guilts at all. I am just hopeless at sketch book stuff, hadn’t even thought about it’s potential for print… I have a fistful of techniques to try…. I love two things out of your notebook a lot. One the bones stuff, dinos? But I like to look at the tiny instead have a fascination with stuff most people cannot see… the other is you sketch of the mourning queues, which also reminded me a lot of some very political posters, some positive and others negative, but very British… the whole ritual was very powerful, wasn’t it? At the time I could not have drawn it, but you took screenshots….. the neo-color 2 was to be one of my next experiments, never mind, I wonder if they can be used wet to draw direct onto the plate instead of as a resist? The colours I have got are just beautiful. Thanks for yet another glimpse into your processes, I especially value the no mess economy of the way you do things, working into these inexpensive books in a way seems like an evolution of that. Hope there’s more to come in ‘23!

I think you're being a bit hard on yourself when you describe dismantling and destroying your sketchbooks and taking pages out for scratch paper. The fact is, you were using your sketchbooks, and that's a huge improvement over filling a page or two and then "Squirrel!!" Off to another sketchbook, like I do. Your description was actually very inspiring to me to not worry about messing up my sketchbooks.
@jekalambert94122 жыл бұрын
Fun to see a "behind the scenes" video. I really appreciated you revealing that you don't have the discipline to sketch every day. I don't either. It's something about creatives - they always see the new possibilities and follow their interests instead of doing something because they're "supposed to" or it's "helpful". Your approach to art is like the spiritual teachings that instruct you to follow your passion. Mark, with your talent and creativity, I honestly don't see the benefit for you in being "disciplined" about having a daily sketch practice. You're doing your art regularly and getting enormous growth without the sketchbook practice. Why force yourself to do it? When someone tells me I "should" do this or that every day, I tell them the only things I do every day are breathe, drink water and pee. Beyond that, it's anybody's guess.
@yeatesmakes2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeka, this is a really thoughtful comment, thanks. I certainly won't be a prisoner to this pledge! My motivation is mainly that there have been times where I've kept up regular sketchbook practice and those periods have always reaped rewards. It's also part of a bigger mission to use my time more wisely. A lot of the time I've devoted to making recently has been with a view to make a video, or get something on my website. In order to retain a nice free approach I'm finding the sketchbook gives me that springboard. We'll see how it goes!!!! Again, thanks for the lovely comment. You've been following along for so long and the fact I've managed to keep people like yourself interested is really rewarding and giving me loads of motivation to keep going : )
