My great grandfather was a gunsmith/smith in different trades kinda, had a montenegrin, which is still in my family, with an ivory handle with gold inlay. It's quite fascinating how a piece of history can land in your hands. Great grandfather was a Macedonian.

It's possible that your great grandfather might have armed the revolutionaries during the 1903 Krushevo Uprising. There are multiple images online of gasser revolvers standing by the motto of the uprising, which was "СЛОВОДА ИЛИ СМРТ".

Hello Ian! Glad to see some Balkan arms on the show. I take an amateur interest and just wanted to add something. Although Montenegro was never totally conquered by theOttoman empire, it had its frontiers occupied and was utterly surrounded. Much of the weaponry carried through the centuries are characterized as Ottoman weapons and often have their origins in the middle east. That is the influence of the grips. The jewels set, the silver, the engravings, that is all seen across the centuries and the various corners of the Ottoman empire. Montenegrins as you mentioned, much like americans cherish their arms. That said, arms had a greater role in society and were commonly used as a display of wealth, as seen with these Gasser pistols. This phenomena is seen in the Caucuses with silver gripped shashkas, in Yemen and the rest of the arab world with ornate Jambyas. In Montenegro, men would tuck this yataghans (short sabres) and daggers of all sorts and later pistols like these into their holsters (silav, bensilah) which were behind their sashes (trombolos) and display the weapons. This was a sign of respect not concealing arms) and allowed quick access if needed. Something not uncommon through the centuries of constant war and tribal feuds. @@KuK137 there's a lot of conflicting reasoning for and against glove use. Generally, wash your hands before you touch whatever you care that much about.

@@KuK137 What they're thinking is that when wearing gloves there's a higher chance of an item being dropped and irretrievably damaged. Fingerprints can simply be cleaned off which a gun of this value would likely be cleaned up right before they go to sale regardless. Besides, its not like the auction house just lets him go around doing whatever. He is generally asking the actual owners of the pieces (through the auction house) for permission to shoot a promotional film on the item. That's why he always plugs the fact that its up for sale at the end of the video and where you can find it. So the owners are more than able to put their own restrictions on how he handles it or just say no.

There are so many Gasser revolvers (9mm,11mm,8mm) the cheapest ones are about 250€. The Austrian Sturmtruppen in WW1 preferred this revolver, because of it's man- stopping-power.

There are lots of the M1898 8mm Rast&Gasser, but the 9mm and 11mm ones are harder to find in Austria.

you mentioned that the Gasser 1970 uses the 11,3x36R, like the Werndl carbine. But didn't the Werndl use the 11.15×42R and later 11.15×58R cartridge? I am talking about the Werndl-Holub rifle, i didn't find any info on a Werndl carbine in particular.

I've always thought that a Gasser would have made quite the horse pistol. A heavy load of fff in that short Werndel would have been big medicine in those days. Couple it with the matching carbine and you would be quite well armed.

Nicholas of Montenegro ruled from 1860 and these revolvers were not status symbol but very needed weapon for his army. Every adult - means every Montenegrin older than 12 needed to buy this revolver since you were soldier from 12-13 in that time. They were used from 1875 till the end of WW1.

This revolver is finer than a lot of modern revolvers 😥😥 swoon .. did you see that cylinder gap n the recessed chambers n those nice sights n its double action still too .. ik fixed closed frame is stronger than open frame too but gah i quite like the look of open .. this is besides the ornate features, such a fine revolver. Im not a collector but this piece i would enjoy possessing especially if someone remade this in a modern caliber and steel

A 310 grain bullet going 700 FPS is not roughly equivalent to .45 ACP. A standard .45 ACP is 230 grain, and goes 800-850 FPS. It may be about the same caliber, but it's significantly slower and heavier, which results in far more penetration in soft targets. Something like that could easily kill a moose with one shot. Good luck doing that with .45 ACP. A more comparable cartridge would be a modern .45 Colt cowboy load, but even that is significantly lighter.

They strike me as being more the .475 Linebaugh than the Desert Eagle of their day. Ballistically they are reminiscent of one iteration of the modern .500 GI cartridge. While I am a big fan of buying guns to shoot them, I hope they fall into the hands of a collector who is skilled at restoration - that second one looks like someone with the right skills could bring it back to life, aesthetically if not functionally.

I would very readily compare this to a .45 acp I found some figure from someone on your site comments "11x36mm Gasser fired 20g (312 grains) bullet @ ~220-250m/s*" from 2014- credits to "bojan" 312 grains with a speed at or near .45 acp 230 Grain army ball It's actually MORE powerful depending on how much leeway you give the velocity figure. I would call this more like .45 LC from period firearms; its a similar caliber with similar performance and probably what they were aiming for when they designed the thing.

Those grips are straight influenced by Turkish style of decoration of weapons. Ottomans Turks loved to decorated all by silver and stones.
