The bishops of Winchester held lands in Waltham from Saxon times, having acquired it from King Edward the Elder in 904 in exchange for lands at Portchester. The remains of timber buildings have been found at the site which may have formed the early residence. Domesday Book records that the bishop had a park for wild animals here in 1086.

Hi Paul. Just catching up with your latest videos (been a bit busy over the summer and not had much time to watch KZbin). Love this one. I have never been to Bishops Waltham Palace and not sure why, looks a very interesting place. Oddly, I do have memories of being taken to the (now gone I believe) Bishops Waltham Little Chef as a child whilst staying g with my Great Aunt and Uncle in Portchester. Uncle Bill used to love driving for miles so we’d go to places like Beaulieu and call at the Little Chef for tea on the way home. Now’t to do with your lovely film other than it stirring a distant memory from over 50 years ago. As always, keep ‘em coming! Kind regards, Mark

paul thanks for the drone footage the higher elevation footage shows many minor patch/crop marks in the grass and as an amateur archeologist for the last 40 years that tells me most of the site wonders are still buried and, it's bigger than the current boundaries. I thought you would like to know that! and thanks again for the amazing drone work!

I’ve got goosebumps. I’m gutted I missed the live stream. Paul, my maternal grandfather was from this area. A dear friend of mine did some research on my family tree. My grandfather moved to Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 with his father and brother when their mother died young. My great grandfather married his sister in law so she could raise my grandfather and his brother respectfully as a married woman. Going further back, there were family members in the workhouse. Absolutely heartbreaking learning about that. Great video Paul, thank you so much. I wonder if my ancestors walked where you were.

Hi Paul, Lovely film as usual. Now, my mother was born in Portsmouth in 1934 (sadly no longer with us). She met my father when he was doing his National Service and based at Eastleigh Barracks. My parents moved to Northolt (where I was born) after they married as my father’s family were in Greenford. However, my Great Aunt and Uncle (mum’s side of the family) lived in Portchester so we would visit them when we could. In the 60’s I spent a couple of weeks of my summer school holiday with my Great Aunt and Uncle. Uncle Bill loved driving and with my Aunt, took myself and the neighbour’s lad to Beaulieu Motor Museum which was still very much in its infancy in those days. Back then the M27 past Southampton didn’t exist so we had to do the trip mainly on A roads. As far as I know I have not been to Bishop’s Waltham Abby although I recall a photo of me and the other lad (can’t recall his name after all these years) being taken sat on a ruined wall. It was likely at Beaulieu but could have been Bishop’s Waltham. What can recall was being taken to a Little Chef roadside restaurant that was at Bishop’s Waltham! Sadly, the Abbey ruin has long outlasted the Little Chef chain. There you go, some absolutely worthless family trivia! 😂 As always, keep ‘em coming! Best wishes, Mark

In 1644 200 Royalists were besieged in the palace for 3 days before surrendering to the Roundheads, the following year Cromwell ordered the palace to be slighted. The attack on the palace was around the same as the Battle of Cheriton, in March of 1644, 7 miles north of the palace, where the Royalists suffered their first big defeat.

As a boy I remember asking my Dad which side our family were on during the civil wars 1642./49. He gave it some though and said” Probably the side that was winning at the time”. Could you blame people for following this route Cromwells Puritans destroyed many beautiful churches and monasteries 😢
