It's a pity we don't have more David Lean pictures but what we have is an amazing group of films. They try to make epics today but it's all effects and explosions. The Lean/Jarre collaborations are true works of art!

Agreed - although Lean made a number of excellent films that don't fit the label of "epic". His early British pictures, especially the two Dickens' adaptations, Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, but also This Happy Breed, Brief Encounter, The Passionate Friends, Hobson's Choice are among his best. His first truly international picture, Summertime, is sadly overlooked.

One of my three favorite soundtracks of all time. All three just happened to be composed by my favorite composer of all-time, Maurice Jarre: "The Damned", "Ryan's Daughter" and "A Passage to India".

The orchestration of a Passage to India is just wonderful, I just love his orchestrations, Mr Maurice Jarre is one of my favourite greatest composers, his music orchestrations are absolutely stunning and OUTSTANDING, Mr Maurice Jarre brings passion and style in one note immediately you sense you are either in Britain or India, Mr Maurice Jarre's OUTSTANDING work and David Leans fabulous movie which I love with an amazing OUTSTANDING international cast certainly will continue to be a classic.

A great ffilm....we saw it in first run at a 70MM house and it was stunning. Two big undeserved snubs: Judy Davis should have won the Oscar instead of Sally Field. I love Field, but her performance in A Place in the Heart just does not stand up...she essentially wore the same expression thru the entire film...in fact that film plays like a made for TV film of the era. The other snub was Victor Banerjee, who deserved a best actor nomination, at least. The film was brilliant...not static or stagey....it plays fresh to this day.

John did you post something similar on the Murder on The Orient Express Soundtrack? Because I came back here to listen. Yes - there IS a similarity, isn't there? However don't you think you're being a little unfair, calling him a 'plagiarising shyster'? He wouldn't have been the first to dip into dear Ramsey-Korsakov. Messrs Boroden Wright and Forrest did the same for Kismet...

The movie itself is not as deep-moving as the music. The same phenomena sometimes occurred with operas in the 19th century.

Yes, I hear you. I saw the movie in the cinema and remember being highly irritated that the movie almost 'petered out'. We never did find out what happened in the Caves of Malabar...
@williamgardiner2010

@@suecollins3246 It's because you never find out in the EM Forster book either. So it must remain as a mystery. Lean however does provide a possible clue in the jump cut from Adela panicking in the cave to water seeping out when an elephant bathes. It's clearly an orgasm - Lean never put jump cuts in without a point. So Adela freaks out over her sexuality? It's what the Australian actress Judy Davis told Lean what she thought happened and he then cast her. But he nor Forster didn't want to have some grand reveal as in an Agatha Christie novel.

@@williamgardiner2010 Hmmm...You might be right. Lots of symbolism in even the most harmless seeming of novels - look at Alice In Wonderland and Peter Pan and The Water Babies. I never much liked _any_ of them and I've occasionally wondered _why_ .

Well that like comparing apples and oranges. One is for a film about gangsters in lower Manhattan; the other is for a film set during the British Raj in India.
@JohnColtrane2000
@JohnColtrane2000 2 жыл бұрын
a better comparison case i think woud be Morricone's Salo, similar 20s vibe, different angle, check it out -- two great scores! OUATIA is a nostalgic piece; this is more of a period narrative.
